To start off with, I am no professed handyman. I also never post anything on RUclips. I normally just find out how to accomplish what I need to do via the Internet and especially RUclips. I also know my limitations. So when my wife asked me to install a chandelier where we had a can light, I went to RUclips and found this video. The instructions were spot on and the end result was a polished light fixture install. This is a great product for about $19.00 that you will not be disappointed in.

Thank you Westinghouse. My confidence was good going into this project, but now seeing this product I have complete confidence in replacing one recessed light to a new chandelier we just bought. Thank you for anticipating the needs of the consumer.

I have been taught to wrap the wire and nuts with electrical tape for an added protection - the directions recommend that as well

This adapter isn’t computable with pop in cans. That means they aren’t braced, just popped into a hole in the drywall. These type of cans might not support the added weight of your new light.

Used this kit following exact directions, can support brace and chandelier right along with it,ripped right out of the ceiling. Chandelier weights maybe 7 lbs.

Same complaint as others. I have worked construction for years and have used many self tappers, and its obvious, self tapping screws work much better that self piercing screws. I would never "choose" to use these types of screws for this type of awkward overhead project. I had to pre drill the holes like others and ruined some wood drill bits in the process because i didn't want to run out to home depot AGAIN just to buy better screws. It's funny that similar complaints date back multiple years (on this video alone) and they still haven't just switched the screws. They probably get these screws too cheap to switch them out. I mean think about it, they give you 4 cheap screws knowing you will have trouble with them, and probably lose at least one. Second thing I didn't like was the "Decorative" Medallion. Its ugly. I ended up spray painting my metal cover plate white and luckily my light cover plate covered the inner hole. But all and all, a couple modifications and everything looks great.

Self-tapping, my ass. That was the most difficult part of the install. Unless your can is made of Aluminum Foil, you need to pre-drill the holes for the mounting bracket into the Can.

toneyjl59 Thank you for contacting us. Sorry you are having trouble with the self-piercing screws. We have tested them on both aluminum and steel cans, without any problems. Some of the possible causes for not piercing the can is that not enough torque is generated by the drill. Are you using a cordless drill? Check and see if it is completely charged? If the answer to that is yes, here are a few other suggestions: You can try using a plug-in drill (they have more torque)? Also If you have a ¼” hex driver it holds the screw better allowing you to put more weight behind it. If all else fails, you can drill a pilot hole (1/16” or 1/8” diameter) into the side wall of the can to get the screw started. Please let us know if this helps.

    • @bjschmitz1
      @bjschmitz1 9 лет назад

Greg you are absolutely correct and you gotta love the Westinghouse reply basically telling you that you're an idiot (didn't you know Greg that you have to charge your drill before using it!). I flat out don't believe Westinghouse tested these "self-piercing" screws on a variety of cans. Since the screws don't work, I've tried to pre-drill my cans with a regular drill, then an impact drill, and now think I need to go out and buy a high-speed drill bit better suited for metal.

Brian Schmitz Brian - We are sorry that you are having trouble with the self-piercing screws. Could you give us some information about the recessed can you are having trouble with? Possibly the make, size and model number? We would like to look into this issue further. Thank you for your patience.

I'm sure the gentleman in the video is using self-piercing screws. And, I suspect, the recessed housing he is drilling through is cheap and thin. However, those screws are not what is shipped with the product -- tthey are standard sheet metal screws. And I attempted to drill through a recessed housing with some substance, using a driver with a just charged battery. Result: not a scratch. So, just went out to ACE to buy self-tapping screws. ACE guys laughed at the "self-tapping screws" I showed them from the conversion kit and then pointed me to the actual thing. Perhaps a little bit of real world research with the actual product components would allow delivery of a quality product. From comments I have read, the Westinghouse engineers likely have new idea of how viable these kits are across a broad range of potential application.

      +John Schinka
Hi John, Thanks for contacting us. On the video we are using the Self-Piercing screws supplied with the Recess Light Converter. As you know, in the market there are different types of sheet metal screws.
I've added a link to an image where I am showing the images of 3 different screw types relevant to this conversation. As you can see, the tip of the screws are very different. The tip of the Self-Piercing screw is very pointed and designed to pierce the metal. That is why we selected this type for this application. The Self-Piercing screw is what is supplied with the kit.

The recessed housing used for the demo were purchased from 2 of the large DIY stores and are standard recess housings.
Also, we want to mention that different cordless drills have different torque ratings, so to level the field we recommend using a “corded” drill.
Additionally, we have tested this kit in many real world application, and we did find that not all recess housings are made from the same material or the same thickness, so we did an addendum video that showed for the recess housings with heavier walls to use drill bit to punch through it.
Copy and Past the address into your browser to view addendum video: ruclips.net/video/JeIAR1h2ICo/видео.html
We do care about feedback, and appreciate your comments.

My recessed light can is not flush with drywall. Its 1/2" pass the inside edge of drywall. Because of this the metal cover plate cannot slide pass the bracket (as bracket is almost same level as drywall) it okay to not install cover plate and install Medallion directly?

Hi, I have installed this kit in my bathroom without no problems. Before attaching the chandelier to the installed converter kit, I tested it with a lamp cord to make sure it was working and all the lights came on. So I proceeded to attach the chandelier to the wires on the socket pigtail. I did it properly: live wire with black wire and neutral with white wire. After turning on the power, it won't light up. There are 4 recessed lights on the ceiling and they are turned on by one switch on the wall. When I turn the switch on all the other 3 recessed lights come on except for the one where the chandelier was installed and I hear a click sound in the light box where the chandelier is. What could be wrong?
