"Straws Pulled at Random" blew my mind when I first heard it. It's brutally heavy up front, ethereal and beautiful in the back. Friggin crazy.

I'm currently listening to "Chaosphere" to hear if my ears agree with yours. They don't, I still rank "Destroy, Erase, Improve" at the very top, but "Chaosphere" is indeed an excellent album.

Pete is a very strange figure in my life. Of course we have individual tastes and they diverge in many, many places. On the other hand, I can't think of anyone else I'd trust with guidance through the discographies of both Fleetwood Mac and Meshuggah.

    My Ranking:
    1. obZen - The first album I ever heard from them. Completely blew my mind.
    2. Nothing - Absolute perfection
    3. Destroy Erase Improve - Love every song other than a couple that I think are still solid.
    4. Chaosphere - Not a fan of the opening track, but after that the album is excellent.
    5. Catch Thirtythree - Great record, but not as strong as the classics that came just before it and after.
    6. Violent Sleep of Reason - Great consistent songwriting, but doesn’t have the standouts like the classics.
    7. Koloss - Good record, but it does sound like the band is on autopilot.
    8. Contradictions Collapse - Decent tech thrash record, but the songs blend and the vocals are like a bad impersonation of James Hetfield. Still, it’s a mildly enjoyable listen.

I remember the first time I heard meshuggah. My mind went crazy. Just to think that all of they're music is in 4/4 time signature is crazy. The reason why they sound technical is because of the polyrhythms and strange articulation of drums and guitar. Great band!

33rd like, which goes in line with my favourite Meshuggah album.
I also love Nothing, Chaosphere, Destroy Erase Improve and the None and I EP's. I like Koloss and Contradictions Collapse well enough. ObZen and The Violent Sleep of Reason, not so much.
But if you want to talk desert island albums, then Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects - Sol Niger Within is the one for me.

Was waiting for this since a while really happy that you finally came around with this. What's so amazing about this band is that everybody is gonna have completely different lists. Its interesting for me your top 2 would be placed in the lower half of my list. You were absolutely spot on about the Holdsworth like playing of Frederik thordendahl it's unbelievable how good of a guitarist he actually is and one of my favourites. I am also a huge fan of the none ep and the psykisk testbild ep since they have some outstanding guitar and fluid drum work.
Anyhoo, this would be my list
    1. Obzen (their crown jewel and masterpiece imo)
    2. Contradictions collapse (I think this is a fantastic thrash record and haake is very explosive or free form here. This has my favourite solos from Frederik)
    3. Nothing
    4. Violent sleep of reason
    5. Catch 33
    6. Destroy erase improve
    7. Koloss
    8. Chaosphere

  • @knightvisioniixv

My fav metal band - an outfit where viable melodic sensibilities take a backseat to rhythmic exploration (Rhythm is key to Meshuggah); Somewhat comparable to traditional African drum music, where every part serves a function in the rhythmic jigsaw. Insane polyrhythmic drumming, syncopation, cycles--the works! Every instrument functions in a percussive manner (vocals included.) All of this can be disorienting, if not outright off-putting (even for metal fans), so these guys most certainly won't appeal to everyone. Rare one to bludgeon, suffocate, tickle the brain (endlessly) and groove, simultaneously.
Difficult as I love them all, but rankings are something like this:
    1. Nothing (Original '02 version)
    2. Chaosphere
    3. ObZen
    4. Destroy Erase Improve
    5. The Violent Sleep of Reason
    6. Koloss

Great band, but not for everyone. Great live as well. I know this is off topic and has nothing to do with Meshuggah, but is there any chance there will be a ranking of Venom in the future? I know a lot of people dismiss them and there recent output but I think they're missing out on some great music and they are a very important band in Metal.

Great video. I haven't heard them all in their entirety, but The Violent Sleep of Reason became one of my all-time favourite albums. They recorded it live and it shows - despite the surgical precision in their playing, this record swings more than the rest. It's got a warmth and a humanity, where Obzen and Koloss were veering into robotic alien territory with their more digital, sterile production. I also love Nothing (Stengah!!!), Chaosphere, Catch 33, and the incredible I.

Comedian Bill Burr does a funny take on Meshuggah's drumming on RUclips. Personally, I like some tracks over their career (even from the '89 Self-titled debut EP), but album-wise I would say "Chaosphere" & "Destroy Erase Improve" are my top 2.

  • @mvunit3
    @mvunit3 3 года назад

    What is their genre? . . . Meshuggah :p.
I think as a Metal band; Meshuggah fight with Opeth as my favorite . . .
    9. Nothing
    8. Violent Sleep of Reason
    7. Koloss
    6. obZen
    5. Chaossphere
    4. Contradictions Collapse - Just because this was what I was into (still am) at _that_ time, but didn't know this album existed in 1991.
    3. Catch33
    2. I - I'm throwing that in because it is as long as a 1970's Lp. Its an experiment of EPIC proportions that the band would have to sit, "learn" and figure out how they did it all if they were to perform it live today.
    1. Destroy Erase Improve
A friend I worked with, who was an Industrial Metal fan, came up to my desk (in 1995) and said; "I didn't really like this album, but I think you might like it. If not I'll take it back and get something else". 2 minutes into "Future Breed Machine" and I became a Meshuggahner.
Way ahead of its time for 1995 (along with other bands before them), but after 1995, the Tech-Metal bands exploded on the scene after this. It was my 1st Meshuggah album, and it still makes an impact on me. Every track is perfection. How they went into sheer brutality, and then quiet parts as if Allan Holdsworth stepped-in (thank you Thordendal), and then back into the brutality just blew me away (think Opeth doing the same in a different way, and "Orchid" debuting in 1995). And Haake is a Monster-machine/Marathon Runner on the drums.
As it amazes everyone that it was almost all 4/4, but it was what they were doing _within_ the 4/4 that was astounding. As "each" member played the "Lead" or Percussion and point-counterpoint. Just incredible.
I would hope, the next album, or after, they'd change something up with their sound, as I totally agree with you Pete that they need to re-design the monster that they are. Maybe Jens changing-up his vocals with his outrageous screams of the earlier days, along with his deep barks.
    Honorable mentions:
    3. None - This was my 2nd experience with the band, as I had to find more from them. This was where they were going into new territory. The "Aztec 2 Step" is INSANE (you can see Jens doing the screaming in the "Meshuggah Movie" off of the compilation "Rare Trax", and the _movie_ is also here at Yt).
    2. Psykisk Testbild - their 1st Ep, which is weird that the material sounds more like "None", yet its _before_ Contradictions Collapse. I wish I could own it, but I'm saving-up for my own apartment :p.
    1. Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects - Sol N!ger Within (1997)
One of the most brilliant Tech-Metal/Avant-Garde albums ever made. If you can make it through the vocal style, get ready to get your brain blown into a quantum physics landscape of musicianship (does that even make any sense?). This is Fredrik's 1st solo album and his brain on . . . something not of this world, who is currently working on part 2 (or whatever it is). We'll probably get that album before 3001.
    - Thanks for the video Pete \m/.

    Almost going backward through time.
Their stuff in general can be hit and miss for me. A lot of good stuff though. I"m not a super die-hard Meshuggah fan, I enjoy their more proggy stuff, like Phantoms, In Death / Is Death, Pitch Black, They Move Below, Closed Eye Visuals, Electric Red Shed, Break Those Bones, and many many more, or the super groovy stuff like New Millennium Cyanide Christ, Concatenation (Rare Tracks), Rational Gaze, Ivory Tower, Obzen, Our Rage Won't Die...
Or just go for crazy blast, meaning, all the rest. There's a Meshuggah track for everyone. Love that band.

Meshuggah is the rare band where their talent is so palatable, they’re in my genre, and just hit SO hard. Yet, I can’t ever seem to listen more than 10-15 mins before wanting to move on. So Many people Gush over this Band. My first Listen , I dismissed them because of the Vocals & predictable Blast Beats...But Pete is Using words Like " Groove" , "Prog", "Thrash", "Technical"....I Need to revisit this Bands work....

I don't think they've ever used Blast Beats... Listen to Rational Gaze, Straws Pulled at Random, and New Millenium Cyanide Christ. Those songs will show you their "groove."

I never got into them either. For me its those start stop riffs Pete is talking about around the 5 minute mark, those just doesn't work for me. Obviously they are talented but the music is way to choppy for me.

I know I have heard some of their "singles" over the years, but they never grabbed me probably from the vocals, blast beats, and that jerky start stop stuff. I have been getting into more extreme metal these days, so I'll have to check these guys out again.

@@jason-budney7624 I'm not sure where you guys are getting blast beats from, they've never used those.
