It's kind of hard to pick a starting point. For me the first album that really did it for me was Great Misdirect. I'd say pick an album rather than a song, listen through it. Take note of parts you like, and the parts you don't. A lot of their stuff is really surprising, and purposefully so. You're not going to like all of it on first listen, kind of like Gentle Giant. It's a mindset you need to get in to. It's definitely worth it though, there isn't another band quite like these guys. Colors is universally considered their best, but it's very heavy and might not be the best starting point if that isn't typically your style.

    • @mck7646
      @mck7646 4 года назад

To like this band you have to be a bit into extreme metal/heavy music. They touch on a lot of stuff but the heaviness will always come back in full force. I wouldn't necessarily label it death metal though, their background and roots are more in metalcore/hardcore. They are very much an album band and it's best to listen to them in order and see their progression.

    • @littlestevey4172

@@mck7646 I am into Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden and all the classics like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, but I guess my favorites are more of the progressive varities like Dream Theater, Queensryche, Uriah Heep, etc...But I guess overall I'm just more of a fan of the softer progressive stuff like Kansas , Yes, Floyd, early Genesis , early Styx, etc.. I'm just starting to get into the heavier newer stuff, but like I said Im not into the growls.

i see you are wearing a kiss tee shirt. i really have been enjoying you videos over the past several months and your passion for the music you hold dear. i have never understood how kiss got so big and have remained so for decades. i find their music trite and the playing almost a joke. i was into them for the first three albums back when they first came out , but quickly outgrew them. i was wondering if you could talk about kiss and why you think they are so revered.

    • @stargazer6090

Strange thing - a lot of people bashing Kiss, a lot of great musicians praise Kiss and put down Kiss bashers - like Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatar, naming Peter Criss as one of his drumming influence. Chad Smith even went further - in a video where he went to pay tribute to Zeppelin'a John Bonham he wore Kiss Dynasty t-shirt. Dimebag Darrell and a lot of other praised Ace Frehley, Jason Newsted started playing bass because of Kiss Dressed to kill album. So, these are well known musicians speaking about music. So, you know it better than them? God, rock music used to be free spirit larger than life philosophy, but rock fans turned out to be Top 10 wachMojo lists limited snobs. I like music from renaissance period to classic jazz, I have two guitars, piano and drums in my house, and Kiss is my all time favourite hard rock band with all their eras from rock'n'roll to ''Music from the Elder''. It's OK if you don't like Kiss, but people really piss me off when they call them a joke band without any good music.
And yes, Pete it would be nice to do Kiss album ranking or some Kisstory, but I know you have little time and much requests.
P.S. I'm glad I listened to your advice and went to see Purple on their last tour. I'm looking forward to their next album.
P.S.2. Pete, thank you for everything you do, especially for younger people. This is my favourite YT channel.

Close! Parallax 1 was an EP released in early 2011, their first release on Metal Blade which was an attempt to get something new out, quickly while also trying a different studio approach. Parallax 2 is an album that was separately recorded and released in late 2012 after they had settled in to their new label home. Automata 1 & 2, their first releases for Sumerian, were written and recorded at one time then split for release a few months apart. I personally regard Automata as one album, while the Parallaxes are separate entities. There was a covers album, "The Anatomy of..." which helped fulfill the Victory contract, I think.

Saw these guys open for Mastodon was very impressed with the music, but the vocals weren’t to my liking back then (this was for Blood Mountain tour I believe). I recall them being more screamo (which I’m not into) than guttural (which I like) back then, probably should revisit them again.

Yeah BTBAM are definitely worth another living. The Great Misdirect is probably the best album for new fans. It really shows the range of these guys from the brutal vocals to the melodic guitar parts.

Thanks gonna check them out later. I do recall their music was almost over the top wild like it pointed in 20 different directions musically, but all seemed to work in the context of the music. Think they had just released the Colors album for this tour,, but I do remember not loving the vocals for some reason. I’m not a fan of screamo into super melodic (almost emo sounding) chorus stuff, it just grates my nerves, and that’s what I remember ... Hope my memory is wrong ...

Cannot get into these guys. Tried a few times; no go. But that's fine - different strokes, etc . (Besides, beware anyone who likes _everything,_ indiscriminately.)
Nor is it an old-guy thing: I mean, the other day you were rating your Neil Young top 10, and I likewise can't stand the guy's music.
Furthermore, I find you're kinda......how do I put this diplomatically?.... _reaching_ with some of your recent candidates for album-hierarchy ranking: f'rinstance, I think the Babys are great, but there's no way they recorded _enough_ albums to merit that sort of tribute. The same is true of BTO: too short-lived a career. Journey - after the first three, which were pretty good, they almost immediately became unbearable; as for Bloodrock, the less said the better.
If you're running out of credible candidates, may I suggest: Hawkwind, Zappa, Bowie, Robin Trower/Procol Harum, Snarky Puppy, City Boy, Aerosmith, IQ, Monster Magnet, Steve Hackett, Horslips, AC/DC, Billy Cobham, Spock's Beard, Fairport Convention.....obviously you've got lots and lots of genuine contenders to choose from.
PS: whatever you do, Pete - don't stop making these videos. What with the whole world ass-over-teakettle right now, chaos and danger and madness everywhere, media ramping up as much panic as possble - being able to take a time-out...for *normalcy!* ...is incredibly important. Thank you, and keep it up.

OK, I gotta say, your comments here really contradict themselves. So, The Babys and BTO don't deserver an album ranking show, but City Boy does? And, because you don't like Journey after their first 3 albums, they also don't deserve one? The views on that video speaks volumes. I've always said, the purpose of this show is to expose people to the classics, the underground stuff, new and old, and more recent bands, covering all things hard rock, metal, prog, and jazz fusion. I'm going to give the rub to MANY bands, and that's the way it's going to be. If I like 'em, and have all or most of the discography, they are fair game. There's no 'reaching' here. Just because you may not like or know a band I'm discussing, doesn't mean that there aren't hundreds, or thousands of other folks who want to hear me discuss them. So, I get what you are saying, but keep in mind not every band I discuss to going to appeal to everyone...but that's ok. And, Bloodrock are great...so there!

@@seaoftranquilityprog Dammit! I'd just written a detailed response to this and.....and the damn thing _vanished!_ Dunno if I have the energy to reconstruct the whole 500 words but, honest, it went something like this:
Hey, I liked The Babys and I wish they'd stuck it out a few more years and kept recording. But, given that the latter part of the 70s, when they'd arrived, was not the friendliest for a classy hard rock band....they didn't. City Boy, otoh, were an ongoing concern during that same period, however they managed to record seven albums, with very little dropoff in quality (presuming you were ok with the vocalist switch). Point of the above comparison? Just that some bands/artists fit more easily into a Top 10 Tracks slot (Babys), while others are better suited for the Album Ranking (City Boy).
Now, BTO recorded more music than The Babys did, but there you _did_ have a dropoff in quality (I don't know anybody who's particularly fond of anything after HEAD ON. I'm not even all that crazy about HEAD ON!)
As for Journey/Bloodrock: I admit it - Steve Perry's voice gives me hives. Forget "Don't Stop Believin'"....."Lights" is the one that irritates the bejesus out of me. Love those first few Journey lps, but the makeover was too radical for me once Perry took over (and I do mean 'took over").As for Bloodrock, DOA was that fluke in their discography that basically kept that band afloat for a few years. Dire, dire stuff.
Of course, this site is your baby so naturally you're gonna run it as you see fit; but you shouldn't tell us _so tell me what _*_you_*_ think in the comments below_ if you're going to take exception when we do and it's contrary to your own take. I still say there are plenty of better bands (than Bloodrock, anyway) with much deeper discographies that you could/should be tackling. The fistful I suggested up there are just the tip of the iceberg - basically there's a well-stocked gamut, from AC/DC to ZAPPA.
Well, there was more besides, but this was the gist of it. Thanks for the feedback and keep up the good work.

@@lucasbeer353 Well, part of the pleasure in coming here is finding out about 'unknown' bands. Snarky Puppy are a fantastic fusion band that a lot of SoTers would love, if they were made aware of them. (You're already on RUclips - check them out.) City Boy obviously can't be categorized with heavy acts like UFO, Sabbath, etc - but they fit in perfectly with pop or song-oriented rock bands like 10CC, Be Bop Deluxe or the Babys.
I hope you're not inferring that Zappa's not worthy of a Ranking the Albums spot because he's been up and down... I can't think of anyone who's consistently recorded albums over a 25-year span who wasn't "inconsistent" - and it's ridiculous to compare Zappa with BTO and declare BTO better or more historically important. (And, again, I _like_ BTO - I just don't like their entire catalogue.) I can recall watching an SoT video where Pete openly discussed his dislike of Dylan, G&R, Pearl Jam, and several other big names, and nobody took umbrage to this - rightly so, because (a) it's his website; but far more importantly, because (b) exercising your personal judgment on art or music or literature is vital to the free exchange of ideas and opinions. (There are very good reasons nobody respects an unquestioning fanboy.) But by the same token, it's more than a little unfair to label me a hater or a bad guy because I (very rarely) begin a comment with the words "I disagree...."
