You didnt explain what benefit the proviciency/weapon XP gives to you. I understand how to get it, but still dont understand what it does for you. Does it increase damage of the weapon? Does it increase nodule slots?

It's how you rank up your mastery rank.

And maxing out your weapon proficiency also allows you to put a crystallization catalyst on it, halving the cost of one module.

i assume because there is no actual benefit directly from weapon proficiency, the only benefit is the ability to put module marks on your slots to reduce the cost of modules that match the mark. thus enabling more points to be freed up for other modules, or module upgrades.
basically you just gotta get to lvl 40 with a weapon, use a crystalization catalyst to add more points, then keep doing it until you fill out the module slots with marks to reduce module costs

@@rwagingsloth9528 So...Weapon Proficiency essentially serves as a time gate between Crystallization Catalysts? And....nothing else really?

      @@ottodotbot basically yes.

This is a poor explanation because someone who just started the game wouldn´t know what you are talking about.
At level 40 proficiency you can assign a type to a module slot. If you match the type of a module slot and a module then the capacity cost of the module will be half of what it normally is. It seems like doing so will reset the proficiency of the weapon and you can assign a type to each of the weapon module slots. The types are the icons on the weapon modules.
