  • Sleep apnea is a result of blocked nasal and throat airways and can happen a couple of times a night to hundreds of times a night. Sleep apnea is essentially an advanced form of snoring. Although snoring can be bothersome, sleep apnea can possibly endanger someone’s life. It’s estimated that those who suffer from sleep apnea lose about a third of sleep every night, and their tossing and turning, loud snoring, and even choking can affect their partner’s night of sleep, as well.
As we know, losing sleep can lead to a plethora of other problems including headaches, high blood pressure, weight gain, and even heart disease.
Yoga can help to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea because yoga breathing exercises help to strengthen, tone, and open the upper airway muscles, and can significantly reduce stress and calm the mind, which can lead to better overall life quality.

Have been told I have Sleep Apnea and now having to cope with a CPAP machine, finding it very hard as most of my nose is blocked due to an accident as a child and several operations in my life (now 70), a bodge uvula operation that has left me with a constant irritation in the back of my throat, a skin condition all over my body i.e. face related to physical anxiety. I am trying hard to use the CPAP, but I can't see it never happening, thus hoping losing weight, a strict diet, tongue exercises and singing is going to cut the risk if I choose to stop the CPAP. My question, is it worth me doing these exercises as unless I put thumbs in my nose and pull upwards and to the side can I breathe through it. From what I can tell and I like about your exercises it seems to be very based around the mouth and tongue, but I hope you don't mind me saying, as an ex teacher, you make it much clearer when you state the student should exhale. It is not clear, if from the mouth or nose, because the lady doing the demonstrations seems to be exhaling from her nose (ie mouth shut).

Hello, when you say exhaling in first and second pose, does that mean only exhaling or these are more like short breaths where we only focus on exhaling whereas inhaling happens automatically as you mentioned to do it for 15-20 breaths ? please clarify.

I have chosen to do these practices because my Intuition tells me they will be beneficial. The person demonstrating them does not seem to retain her breath for 5 seconds directly after the exhalations, as you instruct ... ? Also, it seems one has to breathe out in 'short gasps', not "continuously" .

Doubt. When you say exhaling, I think you mean exhaling through the nose and not through the mouth. Please clarify, if possible. God bless!

To confirm, on the first 2 exercises
Are we trying to push more air out of our lungs 20-30 times or doing a very shallow breath 20-30 times?
    Thanks
