And if all else fails and you get too overwhelmed, give me a holler. I'll be there in a heartbeat to do my thing. Love ya, Barry!
Barry: believe it or not, I’m cleaning my studio right now during the Summer. I’m not a woodworker or furniture restorer, but an interior designer that is a collector. I’m dealing with storage of things that need to be donated, or used again. Time consuming, but so worthwhile. Watching your video gave me more zing to move along. Thank you. Carol from California
I love this. I’m always intrigued by the way others design their workspaces. Thank you for sharing this
I love how you organized the shop. Doesn’t everyone keep a saw in a kitchen cabinet. Now I can tell my daughter that my screwdrivers in mine are nothing Great shop.❤️
I love your garage workspace!!❤ Sometimes, when I'm watching your videos, I do find myself wandering off in the background, looking at all your cool memorabilia. 😅
Wow! I’ve never thought your workshop got that messy from any of your videos. Thanks for sharing! I love your approach to life. Calm, and might as well learn to enjoy doing what must be done anyway.
When I saw the mess in his workspace, I thought….”This is just for the viewers! He never EVER lets his workspace get that messy!” And, I really thought that it was going to be blah, blah, blah style. But, true to his natural self, it was organised, informative and very worthwhile watching! He has a very special way of doing and explaining, with that pleasant and inviting voice. I think he is my favourite of all the restorers, followed closely by Jay on Flipping Drawers. And who can surpass little Mando for sweetness!?
Oh it does 😀
Barry, you have a heart for wood, you are an old soul truly. I love what you are doing with your workspace.
I have a mountain disaster in my workspace bc I have been ill for so long, you remind me that taking bite sized pieces and areas at a time and organize things don't get so overwhelming.
I love personalizing. Nick Zametti marks everything he makes and I learned from flippingdrawers how important clean marked spaces can be and from At restoration.
Thank you for all you do and for sharing your life with all of us.
Thank you for this. I'm one of the messiest crafters alive. One I get started I can do a lot. It's starting that is the hard part.
I completely agree
One RUclipsr has a quote, just get started!, dainer made
I've used old entertainment centers and discarded bookshelves, and my own made workbench from scraps of wood to organize my things in our garage. I have watched with envy the transformation of garages using matching cabinets, workbenches and painted/speckled concrete floors. That will never happen for me so thank you for sharing your combination of recycled furniture. It looks amazing!!!
Love this!
Organizing my studio is my first step to starting a new project. As much as I try to be neat, I still find lots of threads and bits of fabric on the floor. It gets caught in the wheels of my office chair, so cleaning them makes a noticeable improvement in rolling between work tables, sewing machines, and ironing board. Weather sewing clothing, hand sewing quilts, or weaving, clearing my work tops is inspirational.
I love this
This is the sign I needed to clear up my own workspace 😊. Thanks Barry 👍
Lovely how you turn cleaning up the workshop into an engaging narrative. Thank you.
Nice cleaning job, Barry. And I love labeling. Helps putting items back more efficiently and quickly, not that my husband pays attention!
Too good!
I'm glad your still with us and enjoy hearing your stories 😊
Cleaning up and organizing is so calmly soothing to watch. I'm in the process of setting up my workspace and acquiring tools to do the home projects I want to do in my new/old home. Thank you for all the tips on where you found the very useful storage items and tools and how you keep them. This video is so helpful. I loved seeing all the personalization of your space that makes you so comfortable to work in it day after day.
Thank you for this great feedback
At the beginning of June I did a complete reorganization of my sewing space (which is part of our spare room). We purchased an Amazon 5 shelf and went through all my material, supplies and patterns and got them cleaned and organized. I didn't expect such a transformation but wow did it make a difference. The room looks twice as big and I can actually find things easily.
Yes, labelling! I love labelling! Actually, it just so happens that this weekend, I took pix of all my shoes and printed them out on a little mini printer that prints stickers. Then I stuck each sticker on the appropriate shoe tote, so I don't have to open every one of them to find the shoes I want 🎉🎉🎉 Yes, the totes are see-thru, but that doesn't matter when they're stacked in a dimly lit area...
This is awesome. I could learn from you
@@MadCityModern ❤️❤️❤️
I totally understand keeping order where we work or create our craft. I had a machine shop, totally packed most of the time. Felt good when I had time for a clean up. Now retired, I quilt, sometimes my sewing area gets so cluttered I have to stop and organize. Looks good 😊
Love this!
I'm going with Mr Jimmy D being the inspiration
I was thinking that as well!
Yes!
Who is Mr. Jimmy D?
@@shanaproctor100 Jimmy diresta, he's kinda the maker godfather on RUclips. He does a lot less stuff these days but still makes anything with his hands. He is known for his branding. He would paint his tools white and then stencil his name "diresta" on them because he wanted people to not focus so much on if the drill was a DeWalt or a Milwaukee. Didn't want to give out free advertising when he could brand himself.
@@Keasbeysknight Thank you for the information. I will look him up.
Yooooooo Barry!!! It's been insanely HOT the past few weeks but, we've been getting just enough rain to keep the grass growing. I'm really starting to get fatigued. This video helped me veg. out for 12+ mins. & just relax!!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
I've watched almost from the beginning, and you've really curated a space with both function and inspiration as you continue to grow in your craft. I too enjoy the art of tidying up. Creating order clears the mind. Thanks for showing us your workroom.
I enjoyed your latest video. Your workspace is yours, and it is great. I especially appreciate how you use lighting and objects, like art, to define the space. For me, it helps set my work mood and focus. Additionally, having these items to view, often allows the creative mind to free float, sharpening focus. Seeing pictures of many historic ‘workshops’, I.e., Einstein desk, of Edison’s workspace, you are very similar. Thank you for sharing.
I love this. I could your workspaces all day
I love your work space. I love that it has evolved through time and your acquired skills. You keep on going forward.
Thank you so much
You may have just inspired me to finally get my dads garage “put to rights”! he was a jack of all trades and a tool for every one of them, but couldn’t organize any! Lol that’s where I came in when he would call me into the garage to “hold something for him” code for go get it, pick up that and hold it for a second! I learned so much from those times and he’s been gone for 12 years now and there is still sawdust in corners and tools laying on counters… maybe it time to get some things done!
You can do this
OMGoodness, Barry! It’s like you’ve read my “mail” (thoughts)!😮I just finished working on a short-term assignment, and my home office is in such disarray! I SO needed to see this today!😇
Thank you for sharing this video! I need to organize my crochet supplies, lol!❤😂
Thank you
a lovely video. now i need to set to work tomorrow to clean my various work spaces.
Hi Barry, I also am currently reorganizing my workspace in my basement. It is my sanctuary, but it is a shared space for my family. My furniture or art supplies are crammed in along with camping gear, Costco groceries and holiday decor, washer/dryer and freezer. This year, my mother, who has dementia, came to live with us through the winter and I am struggling to create a workspace for her as well. The best I can do is label assorted clear buckets and to build vertical storage shelves. This opens up the floor space and makes less tripping hazards for both my mom and me. ~ Debbi
I love this. Thank you Debbi
Barry, love your work space. It’s pretty darn cool. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I’ve always thought your workshop is so cool - so many interesting & beautiful things to see 😃 I enjoy organizing & find using clear containers so I can easily see what’s in the bin/basket, labeling (like your dad said) or color coding (I use color coding a lot), & giving things if not a particular place a particular area to return each time. “A place for everything & everything in its place.” I really like the peg board you have & want to work that into my creative & gardening spaces. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I like to see the things you collect. We have similar taste. 👍🏼 you organize very well. I’m borderline OCD but not obsessive compulsive meaning. I things neat and orderly but I don’t wig out if it’s not. 🥴thanks Barry for showing us more of your shop
Great perspective Barry, advice that can be applied to living or working spaces.
No suggestions, but you remind me it is time to shop-vac the garage and basement again.
Haha
I love this! I moved into my space last year, and built a built in work bench with shelves, with a huge pegboard above it that I hang most of my tools for. I find it really helpful to see my tools out. I also have a dedicated staging area for photos and video. I also go a bit bonkers with my label maker.
Thank you for the motivation. I had hip replacement last December, and my garage workshop is in an awful state. Time to get back to the organization project I started a year ago. You tell the best stories. I think it is great that you made cleaning an engaging story.
I hope you’ve had a speedy recovery
@@MadCityModern Progress made daily. Thank you so much for asking.
Thanks for the inspiration. Doing projects keeps me constantly noticing what I want to organize. Taking the time to do that organization and clean-up could be considered a much-anticipated event (in a good way)! Thanks for representing it for us.
You can do it!
I love your workspace, Barry. I do notice your lighting and love the warmth it gives. I’m hoping to clean up my woodworking shop over the long weekend coming up, but I just got done cleaning and purging my art studio. Feels good to organize and take stock of what you have.
This is awesome
I actually like cleaning and organizing my space as much as i like creating in it 😊
I sure am enjoying all your latest videos Barry. Thanks for sharing❤
So nice of you
Hi Barry. Thank you for another interesting and informative video. You cheeky fella! Pretending to be a messy person! But, those of us who know you well knew it was for the real messy people, who are their own worst enemies in the workplace! Let’s hope that they take a leaf out of your book and start to enjoy the whole process of creating, not just the piece they make! Well done, mate! I liked it!❤😊🦘🇦🇺
I have followed him forever and have never seen his place “messy” so I was confused 😊!
Wow. Thank you
Haha. Often
thank you Barry.... always encouraging
In the military; in civilian life that included trade schools, factories, automotive repair shops, and most every other job, there was a designated time to knock off work, put the tools away, and clean up. 95% of any place I ever worked, at a quarter of the hour (typically), someone would holler "clean up!" And that would get echoed throughout the work space.
Were there people who cheated that by knocking off a half hour before quitting? Sure. But for the most part, people I worked with were pretty good about putting stuff away, cleaning off work benches, washing up, and so on.
It made it that much easier to come in to work in the morning, knowing that a) you didn't have a big, honkin' mess to deal with, and b) any leftover messes or missed tools were both easy to spot, and quick to take care of before getting on with your day.
Even when things were so hectic that it was late hours, wee hours, even all-nighters, when it's time to go, pick up the tools, sweep as much as you can, and deal with the rest when you come back in. Even a half-ass swipe at squaring things away is better than not doing it at all.
My favorite comment
I did not expect to see a copy of The Family on your bookshelf, it looks like an early edition as well. Is there a Dark Barry? 😂 I love a bit of true crime and that one is a shocker.
Thank you. Good motivator.
Thank you
You’ve got one of the coolest workshops on RUclips in my opinion. I am in the process of getting mine back in order so I can create videos as well.
good job .... so many interesting things
My hobby, has taken over my entire house ... 😲
Awesome video!!!❤❤
Thank you!!
Hi Barry!!
Diresta, the stencil font will keep the insides of O, A, etc
Nailed it. And great suggestion. Thank you
Staying clean is not easy. I use a lot of tools, brushes, paints for my doll houses. I have quite a few small plastic bins for beads, left over pieces that I use later for different projects. I keep a utinsil holder to keep brushes in and handy. Have drawers for pens, pencils, and rulers in and keep knives and blades and scissors separate. Wood goes in a big box. Have a great day Barry
Thanks for sharing!!
Now I feel like I need a pegboard in my garage. It's a huge mess, tools everywhere along with other flotsam and jetsam. I also feel like I should go clean up my sewing studio. It's such a mess.
Pegboard made a huge difference
Hi I have a problem getting motervated my messy shed duz my head in I'm 56 and dyslexic and 30 stone I'm laking in confidence at the mo this vid as helped a bit thanks👍
You can do it!
👍❤️
Just saw a fairly rare ammunition crate in this video
Yes. Know anything about it? Email me
I am going to say the labeling came via Jimmy Diresta .
Yes! He’s amazing
JD and not the alcoholic beverage ಥ_ಥ
Why are so many of these painted pieces purple!?
I think many were used in nurseries. I’ve found most of the colors of the rainbow and always try and show footage from the thrift stores or fb listings as evidence that this is the way these pieces were found. Great question
