I purchased this 1962 Lane Hope Chest for $75 from a local thrift store. At first glance, this piece looked great, but after further inspection, there were obvious signs of damaged veneer and a failing finish. I was delighted to bring this project back to my shop. I replaced the missing walnut veneer, attached better leg brackets, and finished this piece with a beautiful General Finishes gel stain. I hope you enjoy the journey, and thanks for watching! Barry

Ahhh....I thought you had left RUclips behind. I was so glad to see this video today. I love the restoration, but combined with the bird song in the background, the cozy staging pictures and scenery, the soothing music you choose, and the quiet way you tell the story, it all comes together to make a comforting video to watch. That might sound weird, but that's how it feels. I have my mother's Altavista Lane cedar chest. It doesn't look like this outside, but the inside is exactly like my mother's....even the green felt and the warranty card. I'm glad you saved it.
Funny, you said this. I was going to say the same thing. I actually just went onto his page 2 days ago to see what his "release schedule" was.
Yep except what I was gonna comment on too. I actually had to look him up bc my feed didn’t let me know he’d posted
Agreed
Glad you are back. Love your soothing educational video! Great job
Here is a suggestion: Get a small bottle of Aromatic Cedar Oil, and apply it
to the INSIDE of the UPPER LID. It will permeate the inside of the chest with
cedar aroma, which keeps the moths away, but will not stain any clothing or
linens you place into the chest. This technique keeps a Cedar Chest useful
for decades.
A slight sanding of the cedar usually brings back the cedar scent. The oil is step 2.
The Lane Cedar Hope Chest was restored to perfection. Thank you for resuming your flawless restoration.
thank you!
Im the “watching a transformation kinda gal” and so love listening to your tales that go along with the furniture whilst bringing an ugly duckling back to a swan it once was
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Me too
I've missed your videos Barry. The gentleness that that you bring to the refinishing game is beautiful.
And I'm the type of girl that started to refinish a dresser, lost interest in the project when the paint proved mightier than me, and now enjoy watching others transform pieces.
And you did a mighty fine job disguising all those repairs. A well done piece!
Welcome back! You’ve been missed. It’s good to see that you haven’t lost your touch. ❤
Thank you! 😊
Welcome back! As you can see, you’ve been missed! The cinematic presentation of you meticulously repairing the work needed on the piece is unique and in a category like no other. Bravo Barry.
i really appreciate this
Barry, can speak for only myself, and I am a 70 year old lady in Texas. I watch for you. I love to listen to your calm voice telling the story about what you are working on at the time. The historical aspect is fabulous to me. I love how Barry respects the items and the history, the purpose both original and continuing. He tries to make sure that his commission clients are honored by respecting their wishes for their property. Barry does beautiful work.
I really appreciate this
the tour of the abandoned factory meant so much to me.
Hi Barry 👋😊 in case you hadn't gathered already you have been missed a great deal 😊
Beautiful Lane Chest and you did it proud and made it glorious once again 😊
I honestly can't get enough of your content, your work is excellent and the videos are just a relaxing experience. Keep up the great work.
It is good to see you again too, Barry!
You asked what kind of viewers we are. I like to watch people refinishing because someday I hope I have the space to actually refinish and sell or keep the pieces. Watching channels like yours over the last few years has really enhanced my appreciation for beautiful wood furniture. Even if sometimes it does need to be painted. Thank you for your beautiful restorations and your explanations on everything that you do. Blessings.
So glad to see you are back. Beautiful restoration along with a soothing narrative. Have a blessed day💕
When I saw a mid century modern collaboration I quickly checked to see if you were in it( Flipping Drawers).😔 but so glad to see you back anyway.
Like everyone else I’ve missed watching you refinish all those gems in the rough. I have always loved vintage and antique furniture. I really enjoy the information you pass on while working on each piece. That lane factory trip was bitter sweet, loved the history so sad to see the factory no longer in use. I too own a lane chest with no idea how we got it. I noticed you’ve upped your game on making veneer repairs. I’m in the group that loves to watch you repair and refinish everything. Those who can’t….watch, that would be me.
I loved the previous video where you went to the abandoned factory. I sincerely enjoy each of your videos.
Hi Barry, always a treat seeing you working on these wonderful transformations. Another beautiful job. My Mom has a cedar chest at the family homestead from her wedding days. She married in 1954. She recently passed on to a better place. This video reminded me to have my siblings and I to revisit it once again. I remember it was more of a lighter wood. Not certain I’ll see. I’ll keep you posted on that. At least , thanks to you, I know how to read the date on back. Joyce❤️🙏🇺🇸
Well we’re ole friends by now ahy Barry? lol. I watch about 8 other restoration channels so that’ll tell ya why I watch. Yours in particular bc of the stories you tell, the history of these pieces, your beautiful home and that American flag you show often. I’ve learned so much. What to do and what not to do. I used to flip for a vintage store but my neck is too bad these days so I fiddle around just for me. Thank you for taking the time to show in your videos all the ppl who send you stuff. I get so tickled when I see a quick shot of the things I send you. 😘 take care of yourself and safe travels. Thank you for what you do. It’s greatly appreciated 🇺🇸❤️
Im the watcher that likes to watch individuals showcase their talent. ❤ Enjoy your talent very much.
thank you
So beautiful. I love your work. We miss you. I hope you continue to have safe travels wherever you go.
Well done, Barry! You did it proud!
I'm here because I love MCM furniture, especially Lane. As I've said, I've inherited many treasures from my family. The majority don't need anything. There's a few pieces that your methods have come in handy. 😊 It's my husband's family that has pieces that need great help. I'll never be professional or take it on for my profession, I admit when something is beyond my abilities. My greatest respect for you and the few who have talent and skills!!! ❤❤❤
this is special
Beautiful Barry. So happy to see this. I've really missed your videos.
It's realy nice to see you again. I was missing your perfect work and kind speech. Great job as always. Regards from Pilsen, Czech republic!
I have this exact same model chest. I bought it at an estate sale for a ridiculously cheap price. All I had to do was give the interior a very light sanding. I was so excited to see you redo this. ❤
So good to see you, Barry! What a beautiful restoration. I have my grandmother’s Lane chest. It is well loved and still one of my most cherished pieces of furniture. Thank you for another delightful video.
Glad to see you back again! Those imperfections add to the beauty and history of the piece. As usual, you did a marvelous job!!
Thank you very much!
I am the proud owner of a Lane hope chest, given to me upon graduation from Eighth Grade. It was given to my mother (now 86 years old) for her same milestone. When I can, I plan to get mine refinished to restore it to better condition.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful example of what is possible! You do meticulous, exquisite work!
Soooo glad you're back, really enjoy your videos! They just seem to make the world right 😊! As usual stunning job! Can't wait to see what you do next! Welcome back ❤😊
Beautiful! The imperfections in wood are what make it perfect!❤
Thank you
Waaaay back in the dark ages, when I was in high school, a Lane representative came and gave a presentation on their products. He also gave all of the girls a miniature chest. It was so cool.
thank you for sharing this
This is so beautiful! I love these Lane chests, and I think the imperfections are part of the history of a piece! Glad to see your video!!😊❤
This is a stunning piece. You really brought it back from the dead for the challenge.
Thank you
Nice touch putting the screws in the baby cedar chest! I love your work and you seem like a great guy that would make a nice friend.
I still have the little Lane chest from a local furniture store in 1965 when l graduated from High School. It holds precious memories from my classmates.
wow
Yay! I just finished watching all your videos last night and I thought, shoot… what am I going to do now? Et voila! Another beautiful transformation. ❤
Dearest Barry, It warms my heart you and this beautiful cedar chest 'found each other'. I am inspired to get myself a replacement for the 'sample chest' I lost years ago .. ebay ... and who knows ... maybe one day I'll find a full sized cedar chest too ... mahalo nui
love this!
Hey Barry, 👋It's good to see you.
The chest turned out beautiful and looks like it belongs in your home with the other loved pieces. I hope in your time away you have been enjoying life and your loved ones are all healthy and well.
So glad you're back, Barry. Really missed your ultra soothing voice, and your detailed dedication to your work. This piece turned out beautifully. Cheers from Texas.
thank you so much
Just to let you know, I watch your videos for two reasons. One, I love timeless furniture and the restoration of it is interesting to me, and two, watching these videos calms my mind. And maybe three reasons, I like the sound of your voice, it also calms my mind. Your videos are surprisingly soothing.
I watch these as I love preserving furniture, but due to illness I've not been able to do any work as I'm due to have surgery very soon, we're in mid witer atm and my shed isn't weather proof which is another problem I'm not able too currrently overcome.
i love watching these types of videos, it keeps me going while I wait for better days to come, I'm keeping my hand in as I'm still doing small jobs in my chair.
Beautiful piece of furniture. I just love the "drawer pulls." That bullseye look is really nice.
I love watching your video. You do such a great job.
Hi Barry! I am so glad that you were able to rescue that gorgeous Lane Cedar chest!!! You did a remarkable job bringing it back to its original glory!! I still have the small Lane chest that I got for graduation. They're such lovely pieces! Hope to see your next project soon! Take care. 😊
Loved you using a Lane chest to hold the parts. I still have mine (and I'm 67!). Glad you kept the knobs, too. They are beautiful. What a wonderful job you did!
I was wondering where you were.glad to see you back restoring a Lane Cedar chest. I enjoy looking at mine in my studio. Mid-Century /Mint condition. Beautiful job. Carol from California
So glad you are back. I did not know about Lane chests until I watched your videos. It’s beautiful!
Hello Barry yet another great episode, what particularly intrigued me was the tapered leg restoration. I thought the end result was a testament to your ability to take a piece that looks damaged beyond repair to a sturdy renewed and viable useful piece of furniture for decades to come.
It's funny you post a video with a full size Lane chest. Just last week, Angie at Transend Furniture restored one and many comments mentioned your channel and the video you did. A lot pf us love your channel enough to recommend you to a fellow restorer? restorationist? As ever-thank you for what you do.
wow! I really appreciate this
Nice to see you again! I watch you because I love seeing furniture given a new life. Thank you ❤.
Thanks for a great video! We all have missed you! I hope all goes well for you! I hope all the changes you have made have been all you wanted them to be for you. George from Florida
Always can count on a rewarding video of your work I have been admiring your work since day one❤
i am thinking that both boys and girls should have hope chests. I have a Teri Lee doll complete with a wardrobe and Breyer model horses. When I moved stuff from my dad's house I forgot the Lionel train that was kept in a cabinet over the bathtub. We should all have had to have a compact place for treasures to enjoy and share in the future.
Beautiful results Barry. Thank you for posting it.
It's so great to see a video from you! Your work is so meticulous, and the results are always fantastic. Hope the antique stall business is also doing well. You're one of a kind in this space, and it's always a pleasure to hear what motivates you to rescue a piece.
I love watching old things repaired and made beautiful and useful again, because that's how we did things when I was young post WWII. Plus, I also learn how it's done, which might someday be handy... perhaps, maybe. But honestly it's simply very satisfying watching someone working magic.
Yay! The Lane factory video was one of my faves. I am glad to see you back again. I saw this come up earlier, and I saved it for now, late at night. Your energy and voice are so soothing. ❤Thanks for your videos. I have you are doing well. :)
PS: the chest is about 4 months older than I am. Younger by at least 20 years than the one I used to have, from my mom!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Beautiful Barry, i luv lane cedar chests. I always luv to watch you repair vaneer, it always looks so perfect. Well done.
I have a soft spot for the Lane Hope chest. My grandfather born 1884-1953) was a watch maker, he made a grandfather clock from cedar, as well as so many furniture pieces in their home, a china cabinet, a desk, dresser, and other random pieces, I particular remember the grandfather clock, he made all the movements, I remeber it growing up in Houston Texas. Glad to see you, the chest turned out beautifully.
Oh! I've missed your videos! I'm glad you're back! Stunning work and best voice over, as always! I hope to heard about a new project soon! ❤
Thank you so much!
So informative, educational, and relaxing. Thank you for the restorative life you bring to these beauties. Very inspirational.
thank you again!
Рада снова видеть вас и вашу замечательную работу.Спасибо что вы снова на канале и радуете нас прекрасной реставраций❤❤❤
Stunning Barry. It’s now a real treasure of a chest xxx
Imperfections and damage restoration Lane Hope Chest still looks beautiful. They were considered the best of their kind in chests. They out lasted all the competition. You do great work Barry and I like watching you restore furniture, I learn something new each time. Have a great day and safe travels.
I enjoy watching your work. I have been inspired to repair some small items around the house. Very proud of them.
So good you are back! Missed your expertise, Barry.
thank you
I always enjoy watching your videos. Your thoughtful storytelling is so touching. I like the scenery, the music, and your obvious love for what you do. Thanks for sharing this wonderful restoration, what a beautiful piece.
Thank you so much!
This is one of the few channels I don't fast forward through the videos. Nice work!
I appreciate that!
i think it is a beautiful hope chest with character that makes it one of a kind
Hi Barry, It’s good to see you back, I enjoyed watching you restore this piece. I hope you are okay, and things are better for you. Natalie😊
Thank you. Things are warming up here
Je suis contente que tu sois de retour. Bravo.
Beautiful and it probably smells really good! Job well done! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The lane collection is awesome. Great job well done
The perfectly imperfect cedar chest, glad you saved another piece of furniture and more than glad to watch your video.
Very useful video, thank you for uploading
Barry, this turned out gorgeous ❣️When I first see the reveal I start to get teary eyed, you put so much love into these pieces. Thank you for bringing them back to life.❤️
I like your videos. Occasionally I find a piece I like to refinish and have fun doing it. It is very satisfying. Seeing the Lane cedar chest at the end is just like the one my mom had. It is still in the house. She graduated in the late 40's and that was what she received for graduation. It's still in great shape and still in the family.
Aww what a beautiful transformation. Btw the baby lane ches is so cute
Welcome back. I hope you've been well. I'm annoyed that it's taken me a few days to watch this. I was excited because it seems so long since we've seen you but other things kept me busy. Still, better late than never and it was worth the wait (I watched your next video earlier today. Lucky it wasn't necessary to watch them in order😂). MCM isn't my favourite aesthetic but I still appreciate the time and effort put into the restoration of beautiful pieces like this chest. I think I never really liked it because it all looked very bland, but when people like you, Jay and Angie, etc, restore MCM pieces, you bring out the beautiful grain instead of hiding it behind toners again. You've gradually given me a whole new appreciation for furniture of that era.
Good morning! I really appreciate you checking in. Hope you are enjoying the new videos. I will have a lot of new content out this month. Thank you for all your support. Barry
Great job, Barry!
I loved this video! When my mom died, I inherited her Lane cedar chest that she had bought in 1947, at age 18, with money she had received from high school graduation. It looks very similar to the one you showed at the end of the video. It doesnt have legs like the one you refinished.
Im not a refinisher and it desperately needs refinishing! The veneer/wood is dry and dull and whike the finish isnt sticky, it does have a thick, alligator feel. Its not exactly crazed, just feels strange.
Another gorgeous Lane restoration! Hope you enjoyed DC, I lived 13 miles away for 44 years. I spent weekends, holidays and summers in Buena Vista, just 60 miles from Lanes old factory. We had plenty of their pieces...still do. Cannot help but wonder if it was one of my families old chests you stumbled upon in DC. It wasn't too long ago we sold some pieces at auction. I would keep every piece if I could. Thank you for restoring and loving the beauty of the Lane furniture as much as I do! It is like tripping down memory lane when I watch you. Hope you made a road trip to Falling Waters while you were in DC since it was only a few hours drive away.
I love watching these videos binge back memories of watching my dad working in his cellar (basement) workshop
As always you make it beautiful
Nicely done. At some point I am going to refinish my mother’s Lane cedar chest. Thanks!
Normalde konuşma içeren videoları pek izlemem ama sizin anlatımınız çok yumuşak ve beni yormuyor.Teşekkürler umarım başarınız katlanarak artar.
That is now such a fine piece of furniture! Lovely. Great job 👏
One day I'll be brave enough to refinish my sideboard and g plan nest of tables.
You can do it
I'm watching because I'm a fan of your work 👍
thank you
As someone else would say "I think it looks pretty good".
Nice to see you again Barry. Hello from Queensland.
thank you!
Happy to see a video from you! Hope to see many more.
Que decir de tú trabajo....que aunque tú digas que quedan pequeñas imperfecciones, no se notan😊
Saludos desde ANDALUCÍA ESPAÑA ❤❤
Beautiful job as always. To me the little imperfections are part of the piece's history that add to its character.
I think the prices of used furniture is increasing at thrift stores because you yourself and others have been so successful at restoration of these old pieces.
Glad you get to keep some of your work. Lane chests mean more to me since the tour.
A magnificent job as usual Barry.
thank you
Hello Barry. Good to have another video from you. Missed you.
thank you
This takes me back! I always wanted a Lane Hope chest when I was young. I remember dreaming of having one to fill with all kinds of treasure. Thank you for making this one beautiful once again!
I hope you are still able to find one
I'm so delighted you're back, Barry! I missed your soothing tone, soft music and incredible restoration skill. I watch in hope of getting a space big enough to do it myself one day, and for your company and family values, which soothe my soul. I hope the break served you well. Greetings from Scotland 🏴
thank you so much for this
