I purchased this 1962 Lane Hope Chest for $75 from a local thrift store. At first glance, this piece looked great, but after further inspection, there were obvious signs of damaged veneer and a failing finish. I was delighted to bring this project back to my shop. I replaced the missing walnut veneer, attached better leg brackets, and finished this piece with a beautiful General Finishes gel stain. I hope you enjoy the journey, and thanks for watching! Barry

Ahhh....I thought you had left RUclips behind. I was so glad to see this video today. I love the restoration, but combined with the bird song in the background, the cozy staging pictures and scenery, the soothing music you choose, and the quiet way you tell the story, it all comes together to make a comforting video to watch. That might sound weird, but that's how it feels. I have my mother's Altavista Lane cedar chest. It doesn't look like this outside, but the inside is exactly like my mother's....even the green felt and the warranty card. I'm glad you saved it.

Here is a suggestion: Get a small bottle of Aromatic Cedar Oil, and apply it
to the INSIDE of the UPPER LID. It will permeate the inside of the chest with
cedar aroma, which keeps the moths away, but will not stain any clothing or
linens you place into the chest. This technique keeps a Cedar Chest useful
    for decades.

      @shainazion4073 6 месяцев назад +1

A slight sanding of the cedar usually brings back the cedar scent. The oil is step 2.

I've missed your videos Barry. The gentleness that that you bring to the refinishing game is beautiful.
And I'm the type of girl that started to refinish a dresser, lost interest in the project when the paint proved mightier than me, and now enjoy watching others transform pieces.
And you did a mighty fine job disguising all those repairs. A well done piece!

Barry, can speak for only myself, and I am a 70 year old lady in Texas. I watch for you. I love to listen to your calm voice telling the story about what you are working on at the time. The historical aspect is fabulous to me. I love how Barry respects the items and the history, the purpose both original and continuing. He tries to make sure that his commission clients are honored by respecting their wishes for their property. Barry does beautiful work.

Watching channels like yours over the last few years has really enhanced my appreciation for beautiful wood furniture. Even if sometimes it does need to be painted. Thank you for your beautiful restorations and your explanations on everything that you do. Blessings.

Like everyone else I’ve missed watching you refinish all those gems in the rough. I have always loved vintage and antique furniture. I really enjoy the information you pass on while working on each piece. That lane factory trip was bitter sweet, loved the history so sad to see the factory no longer in use. I too own a lane chest with no idea how we got it. I noticed you’ve upped your game on making veneer repairs. I’m in the group that loves to watch you repair and refinish everything. Those who can’t….watch, that would be me.

Hi Barry, always a treat seeing you working on these wonderful transformations. Another beautiful job. My Mom has a cedar chest at the family homestead from her wedding days. She married in 1954. She recently passed on to a better place. This video reminded me to have my siblings and I to revisit it once again. I remember it was more of a lighter wood. Not certain I’ll see. I’ll keep you posted on that. At least , thanks to you, I know how to read the date on back. Joyce❤️🙏🇺🇸

Well we’re ole friends by now ahy Barry? lol. I watch about 8 other restoration channels so that’ll tell ya why I watch. Yours in particular bc of the stories you tell, the history of these pieces, your beautiful home and that American flag you show often. I’ve learned so much. What to do and what not to do. I used to flip for a vintage store but my neck is too bad these days so I fiddle around just for me. Thank you for taking the time to show in your videos all the ppl who send you stuff. I get so tickled when I see a quick shot of the things I send you. 😘 take care of yourself and safe travels. Thank you for what you do. It’s greatly appreciated 🇺🇸❤️

I'm here because I love MCM furniture, especially Lane. As I've said, I've inherited many treasures from my family. The majority don't need anything. There's a few pieces that your methods have come in handy. 😊 It's my husband's family that has pieces that need great help. I'll never be professional or take it on for my profession, I admit when something is beyond my abilities. My greatest respect for you and the few who have talent and skills!!! ❤❤❤

I have a soft spot for the Lane Hope chest. My grandfather born 1884-1953) was a watch maker, he made a grandfather clock from cedar, as well as so many furniture pieces in their home, a china cabinet, a desk, dresser, and other random pieces, I particular remember the grandfather clock, he made all the movements, I remeber it growing up in Houston Texas. Glad to see you, the chest turned out beautifully.

Welcome back. I hope you've been well. I'm annoyed that it's taken me a few days to watch this. I was excited because it seems so long since we've seen you but other things kept me busy. Still, better late than never and it was worth the wait (I watched your next video earlier today. Lucky it wasn't necessary to watch them in order😂). MCM isn't my favourite aesthetic but I still appreciate the time and effort put into the restoration of beautiful pieces like this chest. I think I never really liked it because it all looked very bland, but when people like you, Jay and Angie, etc, restore MCM pieces, you bring out the beautiful grain instead of hiding it behind toners again. You've gradually given me a whole new appreciation for furniture of that era.

I loved this video! When my mom died, I inherited her Lane cedar chest that she had bought in 1947, at age 18, with money she had received from high school graduation. It looks very similar to the one you showed at the end of the video. It doesnt have legs like the one you refinished.
Im not a refinisher and it desperately needs refinishing! The veneer/wood is dry and dull and whike the finish isnt sticky, it does have a thick, alligator feel. Its not exactly crazed, just feels strange.

Another gorgeous Lane restoration! Hope you enjoyed DC, I lived 13 miles away for 44 years. I spent weekends, holidays and summers in Buena Vista, just 60 miles from Lanes old factory. We had plenty of their pieces...still do. Cannot help but wonder if it was one of my families old chests you stumbled upon in DC. It wasn't too long ago we sold some pieces at auction. I would keep every piece if I could. Thank you for restoring and loving the beauty of the Lane furniture as much as I do! It is like tripping down memory lane when I watch you. Hope you made a road trip to Falling Waters while you were in DC since it was only a few hours drive away.

That is now such a fine piece of furniture! Lovely. Great job 👏
One day I'll be brave enough to refinish my sideboard and g plan nest of tables.

Que decir de tú trabajo....que aunque tú digas que quedan pequeñas imperfecciones, no se notan😊

Beautiful job as always. To me the little imperfections are part of the piece's history that add to its character.

I think the prices of used furniture is increasing at thrift stores because you yourself and others have been so successful at restoration of these old pieces.

I'm so delighted you're back, Barry! I missed your soothing tone, soft music and incredible restoration skill. I watch in hope of getting a space big enough to do it myself one day, and for your company and family values, which soothe my soul. I hope the break served you well. Greetings from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
