it gives the idea that he isn't just pissed off with his existence like any old boring antag; his sole purpose as the villain was to show how valuable puss's life (or, well, lives) really is. notice the scene when he finally saw how much puss valued his last life to the point that he physically fought death right in the face for it, he backed away; it goes to show that he only hunted him down until he learned to value his own lives. i think the whole "i love the smell of fear" is a pretty cool metaphor from the writers that if you fear death all your life, you'll never learn to appreciate it while you're still alive. you'll constantly run away, trying to keep that fear and hold it deep down. that's why he enjoyed it so much whenever puss got scared for his life; he knows that he can manipulate and basically ruin a person's life just by his existence (or in other words, just the mention of death. some people get horrified by the idea of it)
but like in all of our lives, we sooner or later have to confront death. dreamworks W, 10/10.

He beat Death. Just not by killing him. If all you see is living and dying then you miss the point. It's about honesty. Deaths expectations were not matching reality. This is the same reason Puss lost at first. In the end Death knew he couldn't kill Puss under those conditions. If he did it would be over a lie. Death is too "Straight up" for that.

@@renna495 People use nature as an excuse too much. Death is a sadist. He takes pleasure in the suffering of others yet pushes them to do better while presenting the options. By "nature" most people fail to do such things. Death is a wiser, smarter wolf. That has seen much and learned much. He's a teacher and he knows to play. While trying to get others to do the same. Because if you don't learn to play in the worst then is life worth living in the first place? Death has seen so much he's not even surprised when Puss crawls through the toilet. At which point even a sadist (such as myself) finds Puss too pathetic to kill. Death taught Puss by breaking them down until they were worse then dead. That's when people learn.
As for Jack, he's more one that knows about apathy. He's logical and will brush off a judgemental hypocrite giving into fear and hate when they lose control. The cricket was doing ok until that point. Observation without judgement will go further. If all people do is teach grudges and resentment then that's why Jack exists. they learn it from somewhere. From every "nice" hypocrite that dares to pretend they're innocent. From every fool that dares to pretend they understand when they didn't pay attention. In this Jack and Death have that in common. That hypocrites blind to their own sense of "good" are creating the path of destruction from ignorance. Jack and Death at least mean and intend what they do. And they're done with regret. Done being miserable just because others judge them when they don't even try to understand. Who even asks?

There are plenty of videos out there where some genertic epic music is added in that doesn't fit the scenes and it's just so distracting it pulls you out of the moment. To this day, I don’t think many family films even come within the same galaxy of _Shrek’s_ comedic wit; the jokes still hit just as hard 20 years later.
However… I just don’t happen to be quite as much of a ‘fan’ of _Shrek_ as I am of Dreamworks’ other IPs like _Kung Fu Panda_ or _How To Train Your Dragon,_ or Disney’s films during their 90s renaissance, or Pixar’s late-2000s golden age. As funny as the jokes in _Shrek_ still are, there comes a point I start to crave a different direction altogether, and 2011’s _Puss In Boots_ was where I started to feel a little bit tired of the Shrek formula; the first spinoff just felt like a worse Shrek film when I was already a bit weary. *That’s* why _The Last Wish_ is even closer to my heart than the Shrek films; I didn’t expect to enjoy another film about Puss In Boots, let alone *love* it. The way the first musical number and the monster fight play out is the most energetic opening sequence I’ve seen in a film since 2004’s _The Incredibles,_ and the sheer vibrance of facial expressions, ‘camera’ angles, and overall animation is something I’ve always dreamed of but never expected out of a 3D CGI work, recapturing the kind of snappy yet meticulously stylized energy I so dearly missed from Disney films like _The Lion King_ and _The Emperor’s New Groove_ or Dreamworks’ 2D classic _The Road to El Dorado._ Beyond visuals, _The Last Wish_ perfectly exudes a sense of adventure like the original _Shrek_ and _Shrek 2,_ and flawlessly executes high-energy fight scenes and tackles more serious themes like _Kung Fu Panda._
I can respect your opinion that the _Shrek_ films are superior to _The Last Wish._ But being that Shrek himself hasn’t had a film since 2010, I think you’d agree that _The Last Wish_ easily is the best film Dreamworks has made in the last 10 years and is one of the best animated films of the past 10 years in general.

Even if Death claims he is not a metaphor or a symbol, but straight up Death itself. The whole message of the movie works wonderfully metaphorically. Puss, blessed by many lives, was cocky and arrogant, simply because death was not a big deal for him. But at every single new life, he literally came closer and closer to Death. By ignoring Death, and playing around with it, he became extremely close to it. And for once in his whole life he had to not take things as granted, learning that's how you actually beat Death; by enjoying every second of your life.

On to the next page, while I've never personally watched this Movie, I found all I needed to know in just this one Video. How much effort and time was put into this movie to ensure an Accurate, Child-friendly yet Daring and paralyzing example of a Inter-Religious Figure such as Death is trully a testament to the skill that the Writers have for the Movie. The Coins for the Ferryman in the eyes, the 'Whistler*' Folklore, and a Signature Animal referenced as Death. It all seems flawless, and well put together to cross the boundaries to show a common narative for all Religions, and to help teach a fundamental to even an Adolescent mind; There will always be an end, and to make amends and live to the fullest. Death is an absolute.
*In some folklore, (I am unsure which, I just remember hearing of it), to hear a Disembodied Whistle is to signify your time to death. Similar to that of a Banshee's scream. The Further the Whistle is, the Closer you are to your death and the Closer the Whistle, the Further you are from death

I love Death. He doesn't have a "tragic past" that made him a villain. He's not even truly the villain, since taking people's lives is his job when it's their time to go. And he was simply tired of Puss not savoring his lives, and he even seemed satisfied when Puss learned his lesson. DreamWorks is amazing at making stories.
Edit: I came back to this video to watch it again, and I just thought of something. So, as we know, puss has, or had, nine lives, and is now down to one. But how many does Kitty have left?

    • @afqwa423
      @afqwa423 10 месяцев назад +311

I've heard people argue about whether Death is honorable and others arguing that he's not because he just decides to take Puss's ninth life. And then I realized that was the point. Death isn't fair. You can do everything right and still die to some stupid thing you had no control over. Death has no principles. He is unconcerned with right or wrong. His only real motivation here is pride. Puss insulted his pride and that's all that mattered here. If Puss acted like he had gotten one over on him, he'd have probably just gone out of his way to torture Puss some more to rub it in.

He said he wanted to take his 9th life early because Boots didn't appreciate the other 8. It was not really about being fair or not, it was about being appreciative of the one life you got because you can die at any time. The death character IS fair because he seems to only kill early if you're arrogant and provoke him. Once Boots got courage and was humble he told him ok, live on, but he'll be back some day, of course he will.
Something to note, we've never seen the character before but he says he was there meaning he made himself known to boots to take action himself. So while characters can die on their own like Boots did 8 times, the death character CAN if he wants just come for them himself. So Death itself is at random but a Death persona character is also real in this universe.

He willingly made this choice and lesson or not those are still inherently evil acts, especially to push all on one gato.
You can't just say he's not out to cause harm or do evil and then the movie literally shows him causing harm and doing evil bruh. 💀

A magnificent video tribute to a character who for me is one of the best, or even the best incarnation of Death on screen.
It doesn't just kill for trivialities like cruelty, power, or destruction. It doesn't care about any of that. It is Death and it has a message for all: that no one can escape it, and that one way or another it will have the last word, because you cannot cheat this truth which is called death. And also, in a way, it values life because it feels respect for those who don't waste it.
A terrifying, charismatic and true character.

I agree and what I liked most about this interpretation of death is that he was more or less fighting for life in his own way. He was mad at puss for having something few people could ever have a chance to live more then once and like he states he uses them frivolously to each end. So he decided to end his ninth one there since to me he would rather bend his rules and kill puss right now then see him waste his last life. That was until he saw that puss did learn the value and while angry that he pretty much bended his rules for nothing is glad to an extent that puss learned to value life. It always makes me think of the dynamic of life and death where most people think they hate or dislike each other but in truth death and life may love each other or be friends. Either way this death in his own cruel and twisted way fought mostly for life too me at least.

      You can stop war
      You can heal the sick
      You can feed the hungry
But you can never...ever escape death

I would say he is very comparable to Terry Pratchet's depiction of Death (who is my all time favourite). There's a similar philosophy with only really a difference in tone and execution. Both are absolutely inspiring depictions in their own right as well.

@@kaizerkingnova7860 I like the idea of life and death being close friends, if not lovers just because it makes sense. And in this case, it would add even more to the character. I mean, if you had a close friend that was being taken advantage of, wouldn't you be angry?
