REACTION to Clay Aeschliman of Polyphia - G.O.A.T. drum playthrough

- I finally had the opportunity to do a reaction to the smooth pocket playing of Clay Aeschliman of Polyphia! I was immensely impressed with Clay's grooves and how well he is able to add life and flavor to the other instruments in the band. Clay truly does channel the playing essence of amazing drummers such as Matt Garstka, Eric Moore, and Devon Taylor very well! In this video I break down the elements of the song that I observe as well as how Clay's drumming factors in to the overall mix of the song! This was an awesome track and I hope you all enjoy the video as well. If you did please do not hesitate to like, comment, and subscribe for more content like this. It greatly helps me out and I appreciate everyone that takes the time to engage with the video. See you all in the comments!

Its nice to go outside of the box with what I normally listen to and this was a pleasant change of pace. Clay youre f******g awesome! What other bands out there are similar to Polyphia?
I'd recommend Syncatto if you like the polyphia sound, i'd love a reaction from you for See you on the other side by them. Aside from that the O.D. playthrough from clay is probably my favorite of his under this format, so clean. Great breakdown and video man, hope to see more.
@@Topway2 Thanks for this suggestion. I just listened to "See you on the other side" and I was just smiling the whole time. I can't wait to check out the rest of Syncatto's work!
@@tillandsiausneoides I'm glad to know that :D
Can you review Ken from candiria, he’s so underrated !i can recommend a link for you review if you’d like
If you're looking for another technical, melody heavy instrumental feel, then Intervals is a great band.
I love the fact that the drums are an actual instrument in this band. instead of just a rhythm and timing section like most.
This describes it well, i must admit
It’s the difference between a drummer with subtlety, clever use of space, and most importantly, compositional awareness.
Clay always finds great and clever ways to utilize space, hold back and let others shine (not just a barrage of chops and ridiculous fills) he keeps it controlled.
That’s why I think he shines so much. He’s got a ton of awareness of what the band is doing always and never oversteps their moments.
First time I've heard someone describe polyphia guitar parts as subdued lol
All of his Meinl playthrough vids are amazing! He's a true cymbal work master
You aint kidding! It was a real treat to watch!
His drumming on Ego Death is freaking awesome and on Playing God. He's incredible...
Polyphia = Inter-dimensional Elevator Music
Polyphia is one of the few bands where every member is playing lead. There really isn't anyone like Polyphia. Chon or Animals as Leaders are the only ones that come close in similarity. I normally listen to melodeath mostly, and Polyphia is definitely outside my realm of normal listening, but they are so good. Their second album is still my favorite from them, but it's all great.
His drumthrough of Playing God is absolute legend.
If you get a chance to see them live do not hesitate! One of the best live shows I've seen
I will definitely keep this in mind for sure
"Boom! Perfect timing". Damn. I don't think i was supposed to laugh as loud as i did.
Great reaction, coold vid, thumbs up 👍
Anyone who can articulate everything you did on..legit...first listen of this playthrough....knows wtf they talking about! Mad respect! Can't wait to explore your channel now!
You can definitely see his quads chops come through with his cymbal playing (rolls) and the way he sets up some of his fills (the cross-overs in the toms and the movement in general)
That "wow perfect timing!" From that ol boxing max really got me not gonna lie 😂
I really have to see you learn and do a playthrough of one of these. If you do keep me posted aha!!
His OD playthrough is incredible
HAHAHAHA You freakin' killed me with that Tyson reference.
If you ever react to Clay in the future, I would recommend "Yas" play-through. .
Hahaha and yeah ill definitely look into that
He is awesome
Enjoyed your approach to analysis and reacting
One of the best drummers out there as far as precise technicality but with absolutely amazing style. Take some time and check out the rest of his material out there. There are some videos of him ripping everything from super fast blast beats with almost unparalleled articulation to straight up jazz. Enjoy man
Oh hes definitely coming back to this channel!
One of the best build up maker beat/pattern.
Man you have a good ear bro… I’m super excited for not only the other Clay reactions but also now your opinion on Polyphia’s music in general!
Appreciate it! When I give more of their songs a deep dive I will be able to give a more properly educated opinion on their body of work.
Probably half a million of those views are me… I like these polyphia drum play throughs.
Much respect!
I looked through your feed and didn't see any Luke Holland. Given the drummers in your rotation, I think he would be in your wheelhouse.
Highly recommend:
* Tendinitis playthrough
* Hos Down (Meinl playthrough with Jason Richardson)

Im definitely bringing Luke to the channel. Im trying to work through the list of drummers people ask me to check out as quickly as i can. Its just difficult because RUclips isn't my day job. But best believe Luke is coming.
Having grown up with rock and rap i can definitely hear the influences. To introduce the artist in their own words is a great idea.
Another great and clear breakdown, thank you 🤘
By any chance have you seen any El Estepario Siberiano videos? If not you could react to him playing very difficult songs with just one hand. He also drums for Spain's biggest metal band Saratoga. An interesting character. He has a video where he explains that talent does not exist basically, just practice and dedication.
Ive watched some of his work, and man is he on another level with his abilities. I need to see what he has going on lately and see about bringing it to the channel...
@@DrumlionMusic His Meshuggah covers are pretty insane, but so is everything else he does.
Hell yeah brother more of this dude
This was amazing. My mind is being opened to the possibility of what drums can do. Love the video, keep up the good work man. 😈
Loved your reaction!! You offer some great insight!! Subscribed!!
You will love clockworks. Awesome camera angle and Thomas is always a genius
GOAT was released in 2018, there are 4 musicians and in this song, everyone gets a “solo” part. Recommend watching the music video. They are incredible. Also the song was composed by Tim Henson and it was made from a Jaden Smith song. You should also check out Playing God by Polyphia, there is a genre switch in the middle of the song. All 4 of them are incredible musicians, and they started off as metal but because what they are doing, they are considered prog rock (even that doesn’t fit what they play). Go down the Polyphia rabbit hole, it’s a phenomenal ride. Oh, also check out O.D., Goose, and Ego Death (featuring Steve Vai) by them. All are great and you will enjoy them.
thank you...now i know how to pronounce his name too...tino pai! all the way from aotearoa(nz)
Thanx for sharing.nice video🙂🙂🙂🤘
Absolutely friend!
Couple summers ago during a show Clay's laptop died so he had no in-ears and couldn't head anything because there was no monitors facing him. So his drum tech taped the click with a drum stick on his leg and he finished the show.
Awesome! GOAT is on one of my playlists. Those guys are so talented. Great choice DrumLion!
I had a feeling this was up your alley my friend
I agree, the bass and guitar parts _do_ in a way set up for the drum part. They're all hitting the same note timing, where all the parts accentuate the others.
Heck yeah buddy 👊👊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 he's super talented!! And easily over looked by most! Thanks for doing this my friend 👊 hope all is well with you.. 👊👊🇺🇸🇺🇸
No problem at all! I thank you for being patient. I know you wanted this video a long while ago
I dug the video. It's the first time seeing this channel and the production is real good. I like the little blurbs that pop up to clarify or drive home a point.
My personal favorite of Clay's Meinl videos is OD.
Im glad you liked it!
I love how you give me insight to bands I've listened for a while with a new view.
Inferi - any song ever please do cover soon (behold the bearer of light)
Arkaik - any song
Ne obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JIIIIIIIIIIIIIRAAAAAAA
I gotta check more NeO. I reacted to Dan a little while back. And i have a Gojira "double video" that i did with toxic garbage, and heaviest matter. Ill definitely look into your other suggestions too.
Great video. I am starting to so more of the scope and depth of what drums can do. Keep up the good work man. Horns up and good energy to the channel. 😈
Thanks as always to you!
I’m your 999th like!!!!!! 🤘
Great reaction bro thank you for doing some Clay stuff! Also fyi there’s a really short clip on RUclips of Clay playing a live show with Polyphia and his in-ears cut out. So the drum tech saves the day by tapping the metronome on clays thigh for the rest of the show as clay plays it all from memory… wild thing to see lol
Oh wow, Ill have to find this...
@@DrumlionMusic it’s crazy to see honestly, top tier performance imo 🥁
Austin Archey just released a drum play through for Cursed to Die for Meinl cymbals. Jeez !!
Oh snap! Gotta get on this asap!
Great react.
Check out Clay’s play through of O.D. It will blow you mind. I promise you.
Cool reaction. OD playthough is amazing and more polyphia would be nice
Im definitely checking that one out!
@@DrumlionMusic epic
@@DrumlionMusic you now when its coming out?
A little Larnell Lewis would go a long way on this channel too my brotha 🙏 this channel is the best! Clockworks is gonna be sick too!
It has been awhile since I have seen what Larnell is up to now that you mention it...
@@DrumlionMusic he’s a legend 🔥
You mentioned is sounds more hip hop. Thats how the guitar player rights. He listens to a lot of hip hop and rap to write
I enjoyed your reaction to Clay's mad drumming skills. He is really fun to watch. Polyphia has the best technical musicians, they are a complete joy to observe. I'm going to see them live in April for the first time and really looking forward to it.
As a side note, Meinl Cymbals dropped a new video today with Austin Archey's playthrough of “Cursed to Die.” I thought of you immediately. I know you're super busy, but if you have time, it's worth checking out and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Im definitely getting on this asap!
No rush or anything, but if I may suggest a drummer, check out Jason Rullo from Symphony X and his 3Rules project. I love his drumming and I would love to see your reaction to the drum cam for the song Iconoclast.
Got it added to my notes!
nice content
I appreciate this!
You gotta check out Blake Richardson, maybe Ants of the Sky drumcam
Sounds like a plan to me!
Hope you react to more! I def enjoy listening to drum breakdowns bc drum is prob the instrument I understand less (composition-wise), I recommend Playing God!
That will definitely be the next Polyphia song for sure!
@@DrumlionMusic I’ll be looking forward to it!
I don't enough similar bands to recommend any, but definitely recommend not reacting to, but learning about the band. Tim Henson composes a lot of his stuff on the computer and then goes back and learns it on the guitar, but the whole band is awesome. Scottie is the other guitarist and the bassist is also named Clay (Gober). Definitely check out Playing God and Ego Death, which are newer songs of theirs, GOAT is several years old.
Could you check his Chimera playthrough?
U cant go wrong when u pick a Clay drum playthrough... Cant wait for that Tomas Clockworks playthrough.💀🤘
No doubt bro
❤🥁
I’d pay good money for a Polyphia- Playing God/Drumlion cover!!! 💴💰💵
Check out OD by Polyphia if you’d like to see Clay go OFF
Sounds like a plan
Playing god or Ego Death from Polyphia are great tracks to hear and see Clay rip the drums....
Alright noted!
Late comment, but just wanna pay some respect to the extra effort before doing the reaction to introduce his background as a drummer for audiences new to polyphia (like 1% of the viewers maybe haha), to have more insights about the band before watching.
