This is great, pointing out the little stuff sprinkled into the track that gives it character. I love that Clay doesn't just repeat his fills back to back, all of his playing stays groovy AND interesting. Definitely keeps the whole thing engaging and you don't space out from a drummer getting lazy.
He’s a master of using space. So many drummers get bogged down in showing off chops that they forget that the spaces between fills and notes can be so well used.
Glad you love it Mike, and thanks for the great remarks and breakdown for the drum playthrough. I know you're the right person to react to this video haha. keep it up bro
I LOVE Clay's playing, especially his use of space. And I really appreciate what YOU bring to the analysis, both on the drum/technical end and on the musical analysis end. More please!
Hey Eric, Thanks! I understand, it's just really hard to make drum lessons right now. I make these at my office at the church. My kids are still home all the time since schools are still shutdown in California. When they get back in school I will be back at making drum lessons. In the mean time, I am really enjoying making this type of content. I also finally added you channel to mine. Thanks for your continued support!
A lot of people keep saying to do O.D. (which you say you'll do at the end), but I really feel his performance on Icronic (especially the one on Meinl's channel) really shows his ability in the best of ways.
22 yr guitar player(own amusement) but watching drummers lately inspired me to get a set of sticks and practice pad. Brain telling myself "oh yea dude rhythm is rhythm"...cut to me discovering guys like Clay here, Tomas Haake, Krimh, George Kolias... It's hard me to wrap my head around most of what they're doing and channels like yours help a ton dude. I am humbled by two tiny sticks...
React to Chris turner please... dude is an animal. Changed the way I see a drummer. He is more like the lead for the band oceans ate Alaska. Escapist drum play through is insane
Chris Turner is a must! Songs: "Escapist" by Oceans Ate Alaska He also has a solo project he just barely released, it's called "40 Roll" And you should also check out his cover of "I am Abomination" it's INSANE!
the guitar solo section in the middle/end with the noticably different tone is Mario and Erick of Chon, definitely a good band in a similar sort of space as Polyphia to check out!
Tim and Scott are both with Dimarzio. Tim plays a signature mini humbuckers with 2 signatyre lipsticks, Scott has a signature humbucker and true velvets
Just because there are two featured guitarists on this song, Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel of the band CHON, I suggest checking out playthroughs of their songs from their drummer, Nathan Camarena. He may not be as tight as Clay, but the style he brings to CHON is a little interesting. At least to me it's a nice **clash** between... uh... kinda hard to explain... I guess like Prog Soft Jazz with their guitars meets Prog Metal with the drums... maybe, kinda, sorta... either way, great listen. ^-^
If you haven’t, U should check out all of TesseracTs discography. Interesting Prog metal/djent with mostly clean vox. Start with the album One, then Polaris, then Altered state
Really enjoying your reaction videos. I would highly recommend Periphery. Astounding band, including fantastic drums that balance chops and control. I'm not a drummer so not sure which songs are best to recommend for that. "Reptile" is a master piece, well worth checking out. "The way the news goes" was my first track from them and there is a great video of Matt (the drummer) playing it at a drum festival.
I've been to many churches around the south, and was always amazed at the talented musicians. I started out as a drummer in jr high, but caught the guitar bug in highschool. Mainly because I didn't have to lug drums around the neighborhood.
I really love this kind of reaction, not just sitting and wow-ing. Btw this Yas track was featured 2 guitarists from CHON (another instrumental band) Maybe you can check CHON drummer's playthrough too? The video is also from Meinl channel. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/e4aodW1iSbo/видео.html
Do yourself a favor and check out what the original Polyphia drummer, Brandon Burkalter is doing. His videos for Trenches and Emerald on his EP are very well made and I think you'll really appreciate his style. Cheer! And thanks for this content!
Check out The Resonance Project! Lang Zhao and Yas Nomura did a live playthrough on Vic Firth's youtube and it's dope: ruclips.net/video/HiN-q2h9ZWY/видео.html
Great vid as allways 🔥 could you check out Danny Carey | Pneuma by Tool, it's a live song with an direct camera on the drummer 😁 would love to see that Keep at it 💯
Chops * Discipline * Control.. now that's another CDC we can definitely learn from! Take any of them out of the equation and you'll be lacking as a drummer.
Purely out of curiosity, does your opinion of your sponsor change with the recent stock market info? I believe that webull was one the websites that halted purchasing on some of the big ticket stocks today. Does that change things for you? I’d like to support the channel but not if it means supporting a business that you may have changed you mind on ya know?
Sounds good. I just used the service for the free stocks. You can deposits the money, get the stocks and then withdraw the money so it really is free money. Glad you are saving money. So many people just spend all their money, it’s really sad.
I dont understand this "youtuber reacting to others youtubers youtube video". People do this which cant produce their own content. I liked your channel back then when you sat in front of a kit...
Hey Funflip, I hear what your are saying and I understand where you are coming from but here is where I am coming from. In 2020 I made 55 videos, of those 55 videos I got very few views, very few comments, very few subs, and very few likes. In 2021 I have made 4 reaction style videos and already have more views, likes, subs, and comments on those videos than all my videos in 2020 combined. I see that you have been subscribed to my channel for a long time, and I am very thankful for that. But I would encourage you to like, comment, and share the videos of channels you like so that youtube knows you like them, it is also encouraging for the person making the video, and helps them to know what kind of content to make. I agree with you that a lot of reaction videos are junk, just people watching other people's videos, but I would hope you see that I am trying to bring more than just me watching someone play drums. I am trying to give an approachable breakdown of what is going on as far as the drums are concerned. I hope to help people to better understand what a drummer is doing. I am also, like in all my videos, trying to get better at it, and trying to adjust to what people want to watch, what is helpful, and content I enjoy making. Finally, I will continue to make drum lesson videos, but in my current situation it is extremely difficult to get behind my drums to make new lessons. I am hopeful that as the virus dissipates and life gets back to some kind of normal, I will begin making lesson content again. Thanks again for your support, and thank you for sharing your opinion with me. I don't know what people think unless they leave a comment.
Their song O.D is his best performance
I think it's look but don't touch. But od Is definitely in my top 3
i agree with this one
Just wait for album 4

He’s a master of using space. So many drummers get bogged down in showing off chops that they forget that the spaces between fills and notes can be so well used.
Your genuine excitement for good drumming is the best part of these vids
I don't know much about drum technique. But your enthusiasm for what is obviously great playing is infectious. Great content!
He’s an absolute master of space. One of the most groovy and talented and reserved players out there today.
It's really nice to see the passion that you have for the music and the drum ! Your analysis is really interesting to watch. Continue your good work
you're as fun to watch as the drummers you're watching! Love it, but I miss your drumming.
Hey Eric, Thanks! I understand, it's just really hard to make drum lessons right now. I make these at my office at the church. check out his OD performance!
Dude, that point about chops was right on.
Clay is definitely one of the newer drummer's I've been listening to lately and love his style & techniques!🤘Polyphia sounds great!!
Nice groove even better reaction!
A lot of people keep saying to do O.D. (which you say you'll do at the end), but I really feel his performance on Icronic (especially the one on Meinl's channel) really shows his ability in the best of ways.
Yes 100%

someone prob said it but the 2 guitarists from CHON are featured in their respective solos towards the end of the song
If you liked this one, you should definitely check out his performance of their song "O.D." on the same Meinl channel. It's phenomenal.
I’ll give it a look
Love his performance
React to Chris turner please... dude is an animal. Changed the way I see a drummer. He is more like the lead for the band oceans ate Alaska. Escapist drum play through is insane

You’ve gotta react to Clay’s Meinl ‘O.D’ video next, Clay is KILLER on it
Matt Garstka (drummer for Animals as Leaders) has a great collection of his playthroughs.
Blake Richardson from between the buried and me. Specular Reflection!!!!
Tim and Scott are both with Dimarzio. Tim plays a signature mini humbuckers with 2 signatyre lipsticks, Scott has a signature humbucker and true velvets
Subbed for the active dissection of the music. Thanks.

"The way the news goes" was my first track from them and there is a great video of Matt (the drummer) playing it at a drum festival.
Polyphia are Masters of rhythm, and Counterpoint!!
Reminds me of a lot of the drummers in churches here in the south.
I have played drums in church my whole life, well since I was 13.
I've been to many churches around the south, and was always amazed at the talented musicians. I started out as a drummer in jr high, but caught the guitar bug in highschool. Mainly because I didn't have to lug drums around the neighborhood.
I can still read drum sheet music, which makes programming drums easy for me.
the chorx progression is very japanese sounding, i love it
I really love this kind of reaction, not just sitting and wow-ing.

So close but all of their songs are in 4/4 for the most part but they find a way to make it feel weird.

I wonder if the algorithm still has some kind of leftover code that promotes "video responses" à la 2007 RUclips.
