Looks like quite a number of Singaporeans in the comments section here. Singapore, as an open economy, and tiny nation, has many vulnerabilities. This is no surprise, and has been a basic consideration of the Government in the conduct of foreign and domestic policy. Singapore tries to be friends with everyone, even warring factions. The Government is ultra-cautious, often, going to extremes, in trying to maintain some semblance of balance and neutrality. A clear and jarring example is the recent Israeli-Gaza war. The Government in SG has made it clear that there'll be no discourse, no discussion in public fora on this matter, for fear that it will spark domestic animosties, especially among its Muslim population. One can also surmise that the Government wants to appear unconfrontational to Israel, and by extension, the US. This is pragamatic, but it also shows weakness in SG. Closing one's eye and covering one's ears, keeping one's mouth shut over a clear blatant genocide happening 'Live' daily, is a moral cop-out, even if self-presevation is the goal, and many Singaporeans will support a "Not my war" mindset. Contrast this to the SG Government's quick condemnation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24th 2022, and subsequently, imposed sanctions on Russia (symbolic, but still). The Government made it clear, on multiple occassions, that it wasn't staking sides in the conflict, but took a principled stance based on respect of sovereignty of nation-states under the UN Charter. A righteous position under International Law, clearly. Now, on Israel's genocide in Gaza, and this has ICJ (Internation Court of Justice) ruling, Singapore refuses to take any position. Let me remind those who are oblivious, more than 30000 civillians, more than a 3rd of them children, have been killed by Israeli Defence Force in the 130+ days of the war. By ANY measure, this is clear and blatant ethnic-cleansing, and by UN definition, genocide. (Note: Using the Hamas attack on Oct 7th 2023 to explain/justify/rationalize Israel's war in Gaza, ignores the 16years that Israel has kept Gaza and its 2.3million people, in an open-air prison, for no crime other than being Palestinian). Principles?
Let me make it clear to you. Singapore doesn’t stand on any side and only points to the rights side because we don’t want the public to stir up misunderstanding of hatred irregardless of Palestinian or the Jews as they are all innocent. Make it clear it is their government that cause this sad episode.

Many mainland Chinese have a problem with the naval base in Singapore which many countries’ navies, including the US warships, can call on. The thing is, it was there since the 90s. Those days, China and USA were in their honeymoon and China didn’t make much of a noise about the base then. Singapore also had a different set of security considerations then. China warships can call on our base if they so wish and they have actually done so on a few occasions. Stop using the base as any suggestion of our geopolitical inclination. This Chinese moderator obviously tried too hard to be smart here and could only show his glib.

Will there be a Japan without America investment after it received two Atomic bombs. Can there be a South Korea without America's investment on war effort in Vietnam ? Singapore is the largest investor in Vietnam for many years. Now America is forcing many investors to quit China to the benefit of Vietnam. So with Singapore and American investments it created a mini boom for Vietnam. So can there be a Vietnam without Singapore and America's help. Even China is investing in Vietnam.
