@@oceanhome2023 Historically? Nah, the Sabre flew months before the MiG-15 did, the 17 came in too late to see combat in Korea, and by the end of Korea the Sabre was bloody good - with all the modifications, the F86 could even go supersonic! What you might be thinking of is the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, where Taiwanese Sabres fought Chinese MiG-15s and 17s. The 17s had far superior performance to the Sabres, so the U.S rushed to give those Sabres the Sidewinder missile, and from that moment fourth the Sabre became a leading distributer of Chinese MiG-17 parts. (PS: Look up the Soviet K-13 missile, the story of it's creation boggles the mind). Now that I think about it you might be thinking of the MiG-15 over Korea - at the start of the Korean war the American and UN forces basically only fought North Korean propeller planes, and so didn't use their latest technology, leading to a hodgepodge of first-generation jet fighters being used in Korea - the F80, the De Havilland Vampire, even the WW2-era Gloster Meteor. During the Korean War usually the saber pilots would shoot down the migs fairly quickly...These were North Korean pilots, some time they’d meet a good pilot and get into a tangle. Those were usually a Chinese pilot. Very rarely though the Sabre pilot would come across a MiG that was flown to its absolute envelope in speed and maneuvering capabilities equaling or even exceeding the sabres abilities. Those were soviet pilots. The airframe is as only as good as the meat servos training inside.
I remember reading about Robby Risner's accounting of a dogfight he got into with a Soviet Pilot. The Soviet was absolutely determined not to be shot down but Risner got him anyway and did it over the guy's own base.

It looks like the pilot has a lot of play in his stick, without any reaction from the aircraft. Is this normal?
Normal. Reaction times to inputs in these jets are low because of a multitude of reasons. I guess the stick inputs are possibly being relayed hydraulically.
If a light aircraft with direct linkages, you can use a bit of intuition - the control surfaces get harder to move as airspeed increases. So without reference to airspeed you can tell if the airspeed is low (controls are sloppy) or airspeed is high (controls have substantial resistance).
The aileron surfaces in the Mig-17 are not that large either.
