When you get the citadel videos each one of the models look like they just came from the assembly line. Your videos make it look like they been at it for the last few 1000 years but well maintained like you would think the Iron Warriors would do with their wargear and siege equipment. Loving the stripes, its like adult entertainment for me ;)
Yeah, shitty move on GW's part. Personally though, I'm just gonna use them as proxies for other dreadnoughts. I mostly play CSM and never liked the change to "helbrutes" anyway.
as someone who's not that much into Warhammer, but loves the iron warriors, what happened to them? I can't find anything about them in any tabletop games or model painting pages
@@nickpelloni1014 This'll be a bit long-winded so bear with me - it's not about the Iron Warriors, but leviathan dreadnoughts and other Forge World (an offshoot of Games Workshop that makes resin kits) models. Basically, a new edition of the game just came out and among many other things, they've relegated a bunch of said models to "Legends". This is basically a retirement program for inconvenient units. They still have stats and are still in the game, but will no longer be updated alongside everything else. So while GW technically hasn't removed them, effectively they might as well have; nobody wants to play with or against Legends because they quickly become unbalanced and outdated. They can't keep up with the pace of updates and become useless. So in essence, all these units have been taken out back like Old Yeller. On top of the usual disgruntlement with Legends, there's further reasons why this round of relegations especially stings. Alongside 40K, there's a separate game system for the Horus Heresy. Not long before the 10th edition of 40K was announced, HH was updated to its 2nd edition. Now, in the past HH was exclusively Forge World, they produced all the rules and models. As you'll remember, this means everything was resin - issue being that FW's resin is notorious for poor quality control. But with the new edition, GW decided to migrate much of HH to their main site and more notably, produce new plastic kits. It's important to know that HH units are largely interchangeable with 40K (this is completely within the bounds of the lore because although much of it was destroyed during the heresy, space marines take great care to preserve whatever technology remains). So, everyone gets excited about the new plastic kits and they sell well - they're better quality and easier to assemble than the old resin ones, and they can be used in both HH and 40K. Now you see the problem - GW hyped up the release of said plastic kits and a lot of people bought them under the assumption that they'd be able to use them in 40K, in fact many people bought them exclusively for 40K because they don't play HH. Despite 10th edition having been in development for a couple years at this point, GW gave no warning that these models were effectively going to be made useless when it released. As if that wasn't bad enough, the justification GW gave for making them Legends was complete bullshit; they essentially stated that they're being moved to legends because they're from the HH era, not the 41st millennium. As I explained above, this simply isn't true according to their own lore. And it's even more bullshit because they did it to a shit-ton of units that are intended for 40K and don't even _exist_ in HH! A whole swath of daemon engines, for example, were made Legends despite the fact they couldn't exist during the HH because the traitors had only just fallen to chaos and hadn't invented them yet lol. Don't worry though, this is just one more kick in the nuts in a long line of kicks to the nuts that GW seems to enjoy continually dishing out to Chaos haha, as a Chaos player myself I'm inured to it at this point. Anyway, there you have it, probably far more than you ever wanted to know 🤣 Entire histories could be written of GW and their bullshit through the ages.
@@nickpelloni1014 I've been in the hobby for most of my life and largely support that view. GW isn't the ultimate evil lol, but they constantly go through these ebbs and flows of building up good will and subsequently destroying it with a flurry of fuck-ups. This is just one of the latest (among numerous others that came with the release of 10th edition, which I won't bore you with now lol). After a while you just get tired of it. Having said that though, this is by no means the worst state they've ever been. In fact, despite everything I detailed above, I would honestly say GW are on an upward trend at the moment 🤣. Alongside all the bad, there has been good and most importantly, they actually listen to and communicate with us now. There was a long period of time where their policy was complete radio silence, but ever since the disaster that was 7th and the reset with 8th, they've finally opened up to a certain extent. So I'm hopeful that with all the backlash, criticism and feedback, 10th will stay the course and actually move in a positive direction. As of right now it's an unbalanced mess, but the core game itself is genuinely fun to play. That aside, I still never buy directly from GW - my rule of thumb is to never buy Warhammer at MSRP. For one, if you want to buy new there are many independent retailers who sell official products at a discount. But the real value is in the secondhand market - eBay, FB marketplace and the like. You have to be shrewd and ensure you're getting a good deal, but it's usually worth it. I actually just bought a number of models on the former, two of which were new in box OOP kits. But I also enjoy restoring old and unloved models to their rightful standard. And of course, there's great third party models and nowadays, 3D printing to contend with - I plan on getting one soon. It's a fantastic hobby and if you're interested, I say dive right in, but as you mentioned I would never buy directly. As a beginner I'd recommend getting your feet wet with new kits from independent shops until you feel comfortable with them. If you're in the UK, Element Games and Dark Sphere are the go-to's. By then you'll know what you're looking at if and when you start buying secondhand. Also, just flat out don't buy citadel paints. They're good, but they aren't better than any other brand (at the very least it varies depending on the specific type of paint). I use Vallejo ATM but there's many others that are worth trying. Hope that helps point you in the right direction. Just remember, once you've got the hobby bug it never goes away, it may go on hiatus but it's never permanent. This is a life-ling condition lol
Hot damn dude, this is eactly what I was looking for, got an upcoming iron warrior kill team and this is perfect for those lads. Just gotta try and adjust it for brush only. Thanks! Edit: Where can I find your way of doing the lenses?
Hello Rob, excellent video once more. Love your channel, painting style and clear, easy explanations. Couldnt ask for more. Now, the masking tape is at least 1mm, if not 1.5mm. Need to get more practice with those metric estimates 😅
I was going to use two different metallic colours for the armor - a gun metallic and another metallic, slightly darker, for the armor. But now I'm torn between Vince Vinturellas method and yours. The greenish metallic really adds some life to the otherwise redundant scheme.
Interesting. You sprayed on the yellow, went in with hairspray then over top with the black stripes? Does hairspray work the same with GW contrast paints, in terms of reactivating with water or is it something in the army painter paint composition that causes this? Overall, looks great
@medheadful thanks for tutorial. But when I try to do the silver. The 1 to 1 to 1 of the silver, green, and black. It comes out way too green. I'm using the same colors. I did it over the whit primer.
What product are you using to mask the lines and also to mask over the hazard lines when spraying the metallics? I'm going to give this tutorial a go soon and was curious if I could upgrade my toolset. Thanks for the tutorial!
Hey that’s fantastic work. Does the Matt varnish not kill the metals off. I tried it in the past and my metals just turned trash after a coating of Matt varnish?
@@medheadful I'm beyond elated! I've been debating several different approaches to painting Iron Warriors, but all of them were either boring or incredibly tedious for the result. One final question: Is there anything you'd do differently when applying this process to infantry models?
For what it’s worth, the official Forge World legion transfers come on an oversized sheet and you get literally hundreds of them. I’m still going strong on the Alpha Legion sheet I purchased 5 years ago.
The Leviathan Dreadnought is perfect for the Iron Warriors.

The yellow on this is stunning, definitely using it for my lamenters dreadnought force!
About to embark on painting my iron warriors army. This video is really helpful.👌🏻
Wow, the oil wash worked so well with that blue/cold metal basecoat.
Beautiful!
What I've been waiting for. Thanks so much for adding the tutorial.
Happy to help mate

Appreciate it dude! I hope it will be useful!

Going to replicate this on my own Leviathan
Marvelous!

All that in 3 hours... I tip my hat to you sir!

Awesome video dude! I learned at least three things which I will be using immediatly. I mean you just upped my oil wash game. Top notch.
Iron within!
Great tutorial! Could one possibly cheat a little and just use a smoke/dark grey contrast paint for shadows instead of blue+skin?
Amazing tutorial, thank-you. :) (Comment for the algorithm)
