Luke, I usually agree with you but I think you don't really understand who Mark Darrah is or how important he has been to the Dragon age franchise. He has worked on every Dragon Age game ever made and was the game director of Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition. He isn't just some contractor; they brought him back because they needed him to finish this game after they switched it back from being a multiplayer focused game.
That's true, but it's still not the stance of Bioware. Mark's an independent Contractor, Mark can say whatever he wants about the project so long as he doesn't violate his NDA. This is still his specific opinion. He also said a lot about how he wasn't entirely happy with the combat of the previous games in his youtube's game dev diaries, so it's not like he's just suddenly taking a Bioware stance, this is how he felt about his own projects prior to being rehired. I disagree with his assessment and feel he's being too hard on games he helped create, but it really is just his opinion, it's not the company line.
The point is that Mark Darrah isn’t BioWare…. He’s a contractor. He’s an important contractor who is an important contributor from the early series but he’s not the voice of the company. He’s not even part of the company as a contractor. Therefore, the article was misleading. Had the said something like, an dev from the early series thinks or said, that would be fine. But the way it’s worded, it’s factually incorrect.
@@marilynnbuss3730 I agree with you. In your first comment, though, you implied that Luke was in the wrong for not explaining more who Mark Darrah was. I took that as an implication that Luke was somehow in the wrong in his opinion for that reason, if that's not what you meant then I do apologize, I misunderstood.
DragonAge Origins also wasn’t an open world. A game with different sections/levels. I think they went back to that sort of world building. I think they made the right choice because a good open world is harder to make. A game with levels usually can have a more interesting world, because they actually can fill it with life and plan things out how they should be experienced
What do you think on Ubisoft stealing art from Japanese artists and when caught said people will still receive the art if ordered the special edition. Only apologised and not offered to compensate them in anyway shape or form and now politicians in Japan are getting involved in it
The older i get the more the opinion of 99% of the internet matter less and less to me, it's all BS in service to get views and clicks. And the amount of fake outrage and dogpiling just shows how much the online side of the community has regressed to the point it's embarrassing again to be a gamer.
Say this all the time. Been gaming for 30 years. Being a gamer used to be like playing Magic the gathering or some table top game as the community went. It used to feel good to say I was a gamer. Now I fucking despise this community. The whining and crying and negativity. It's almost an insult to be called a "gamer" now, just because of the way the community is now.
Absolutely. At least it's becoming obvious now, even to thick people, that the Internet is full of trolls and bots. Just pick good creators and dont read comments. Not even mine. Stop reading! 😅 hahaha.
@TakaChan569 I full agree with the first part of your message, but I will never be embarrassed to be a gamer. Being a gamer is a fantastic hobby, the stupidity of parts of the online community can easily be ignored if you just try it for a bit. 😉
While I'll admit I'm cautiously optimistic for the game, I've noticed some pile-on that isn't reasonable imo. One article I saw was criticizing the "removal" of the blood mage class as proof of Bioware pushing a more light-hearted story even though it was Inqusition that replaced the blood mage subclass with the necromancer, not Veilguard.
So....EA and Bioware copyright striked my video since i guess my views on the game were not so positive and also got my old channel terminated, watch the video about this on this new channel and to my fellow content creators, please be carefull, EA is out for blood with this new release,
My thing is, people act like origins is the best gameplay, and yet, a lot of long term fans say they liked it in SPITE OF the combat. Now, folks who worked on the game are saying they made an active effort to ensure the combat was on the level that they would like, and people twist their words like this….
that's a very charitable take which in current year seems pretty insane, with slop after slop coming from triple A every year. I think it's time for consumers to be more demanding of their games and wait and see before just buying crap.
Thank you for continually pointing this kind of thing out. Not only has this kind of biased article system gotten too common, but DA:Ve has especially been a victim of these kind of misleading think pieces and reporting. It's nice to see at least some people in the youtube format are being honest and looking for context rather than talking about article titles only or making clickbait content.
This is one man's opinion. But you jump right on the bandwagon. The article is dishonest. Maybe this guy is being dishonest. Maybe everyone will make up their own mind. Maybe things are being misinterpreted. As for click-bait. Anyone complaining about anything these days is click-bait. Some people just love tearing everything apart and have a built-in audience. Is a new drug.

And these outlets try to pretend that they care about devs, while at the same time pushing them in front of the hate train for more clicks. I hate journos. They constantly want to get the good cookie points while also play into the other side.
Exactly. How many of these kinds of post have there been in the last 2 years? Everyone hates everything. It all is a scam. Or it is all inferior. How about let the game be released. The tell us if you like it or not. The person writing for PC Magazine has the right to interpret what they have encountered without being called disingenuous.
@@donny1960 I don't know if you misunderstood what I meant, but I disagree with most of what you say. I think gamers have played enough video games to be able to tell when a game is going to be shit just from watching the gameplay. And if they release gameplay or trailers that make the game look like shit, the viewers have full right to make their judgement on that game from just that. Games are not cheap. I understand the "wait for the game to be released to make final judgment", but this is a beta. More often then not, the beta is super close to what the final product will be like. Also, if people hate how the game looks visually, than that's that. The final version isn't going to change that. Way more often then not, we can make a judgement off of the gameplay they show off and it will be a good representation of what the final game will be. You have to be new to video games or so stuck to one type of game your whole life to be able to tell when a hero shooter looks like it's going to be shit, or when an RTS, an MMO, a FPS, ect. I have played so many games throughout my whole life, I can make judgements early on in what they show in early gameplay and I can tell when the game will be good or not. Most hardcore gamers are like that at this point. Very often do we get surprised and a game is actually good. That's why it's a surprise. Because it's not common and we don't usually expect it for a reason. Also, PC Gamer can misinterpret all they want, but people are going to call out their bs and have every right too. And more often then not, the "misinterpretation" is completely intentional for clicks. It's literally their job and it is 100% disengenuous. These outlets time and time again have shown to show nothing but bad faith towards gamers. The level of scrutiny they get is 100% deserved and should be done. They do not deserve any leniency from gamers whatsoever. Especially with how much they lie and spread misinformation and bad faith "interpretations" so much.

Totally agree with most of what you say here. My only little nitpick is that you say Origins combat is clunky, it’s a tactical crpg, by that nature then Divinity 1-2 and BG3 are “clunky” but other than that yeah, fuck PCgamer for doing this type of misleading bullshit.
@@craskpillord origins combat is very clunky, that’s not because of the style, it’s because it’s so old, the controllers are weird. If they revamped it, it probably wouldn’t be clunky .
I think they did the tweet and article because they are salty that Gameinformer has exclusive rights to cover actual DA:VE content, while every other outlet stays empty handed (at least for now in the marketing camapign Bioware kicked off recently). So how you generate clicks and reader engagement despite having nothing new to put on the table? That is right: writing misleading tweets and articles, with nothing to say or show off. This was only made to generate clicks (if you can call that, because the content coverage atm for Veilguard is covered almost exclusively by smaller fan channels on RUclips and Gameinformer. And some banter of Bioware devs on X and their discord. Is is more on the calmer side I would say. At least for now.)
It’s so short-sighted, if Veilguard ends up doing well it means BioWare will likely stay open and now PC Gamer has completely cut themselves off from having a positive relationship with a large and influential studio. They’re tanking their own reputation in the industry just to be petty lmao
I think what Luke is trying to say is that misinformation is bad. And if PC Gamer is attempting to spin a narrative or misrepresent intention by pulling quotes out of context then that is purposefully trying to mislead the reader. Honestly the gaming community has been disgusting. Yes some games are bad but it seems like journalists and even gamers are purposefully trying to create a culture of hate for no apparent reason. It is honestly shameful.
Using the AC3 dlc as evidence AC "has never been historicly accurate" is a super bad faith argument. Look at all the work they did with the earlier AC games to make sure they were accurate and, more importantly, felt accurate and fulfilled a fantasy That's the actual issue with AC shadows it doesn't appeal to the wanted fantasy of being a samurai.
@@tallguy752 I mean, this isn't the same as the earlier games. Like they had 3 games in a row where you fight gods and creatures of myth. In Odyssey you go into Elsium, in Valhalla you go to Valhalla and can weild mjolnir.
@@tallguy752 we can also mention the Eso part and Adam and Eve, who made a rebellion against them. AC tries to be accurate in terms of the world but hardly the Story, the difference between the old and new games is that now they are doubling down on the fantasy part. As for the Sci fi part it was confusing and now it's more confusing.
I think the point still stands that ac has never been "historically accurate" from the conception of the series. Every game has a twist on the history at that point in time. My prime example I think of a lot is look at Jack The Ripper DLC and how they used a historical character/person but gave it the ac twist of {Spoilers: Jack being once a assassin gone rouge and seeking revenge} Or the other more basic answers of course are Da Vinci make assassin tools or real historical sites being ISU vaults or related to the ISU and almost if not all templar targets in the games are actual historical people but the games make them all evil/bad in templar ways when in real life they weren't evil/bad. I don't understand the fantasy part tho because ubi is making Yasuke a samurai and giving him samurai moves/training so what's the difference if it was a Japanese samurai compared to Yasuke being a samurai who will have the same moves and or training?? I am just curious is all
I tried Origins just this week, can't disagree about the clunky combat, but no one can tell me they didnt intent to make this game character focused??? Its super character focused. 70% of the time you standing there, talking or listening to the characters talk. I love it, cause thats my vibe... but nah. That's a mess of a paraphrase to claim the soul of the game...wasnt intentional. If not that, what was?
I think what's important to realize is that Bioware never said "We are about telling stories through characters" out loud. It was something they do but not saying that out loud and not saying it consistently leads to games like Anthem. Where there is very little "telling stories through characters". All of what they said means is that they are using that as a guiding light to make the experience cohesive.

I still think the focus on discussing the combat is yet another bad sign. To me, Origins had the best combat, and 2 had the worst. But the combat isn't what made or break any Dragon Age game.
I think I agree with you, though I will allow myself to also simultaneously disagree. I think the roleplaying, the choices that you make throughout the game, are what's at the core of a good Dragon Age game (if that is indeed what you meant). In that sense, all the Dragon Age games have been good. However, some Dragon Age games have certainly been more enjoyable than others. To me, Inquisition was the least enjoyable in the series because I actively disliked the combat and the pointless busywork of the open world to such a degree that I can't come back to that game ever. So it's equally important to get these things rights because they might not be central to a Dragon Age game but they are central to games in general.
PC Gamer is one of the few media outlets that has been overly negative towards DA Veilguard. Media outlets in general seem to be very positive on the game. PC Gamer got a bone to pick with somebody over at Bioware it seems
Absolutely agree with this assessment. I quit even looking at PC Gamer's articles (for anything) because of their deceptiveness and persistent negativity toward DA Veilguard.
1:35 Luke. I think what BioWare is getting at with their level design is that of God of War. Some areas are especially linear, but other - larger scale - maps allow you to tread off the beaten-path.
There are enough gamers paying more for a game and preordering it, only to be able, to play a beta (D4?). So in a way, even a closed beta is a good indicator, how the real game will perform.
Maaaaan, I kinda think it’s disingenuous to say AC has never been historically accurate “at all”. Yes, there’s always been a fantastic element to it, and yes there’s always been liberties taken with it…. But the early games definitely made an effort to make the world at large seem as realistic as possible without compromising gameplay. The God Emperor George Washington thing was not a canon event in the series, for example - that was a literal “what if?” scenario and it was always marketed as such.
As someone who's a hardcore DA fan, the combat system in veilguard looks to be a big downgrade compared to the previous games. They literally dumbed down the combat and reduced the number of spells/skills to cater to people who have short attention spans and play hack n' slash games. Even the companions are very mediocre and i can't get over the league of legends art style.
As someone who isn't going to pretend to be a "hardcore" fan but thoroughly loved the series since DAO, it looks like they wanted a more cinematic in the action combo centric gameplay. "Dumbed down" is to act like DA always had some sort deep system.
Okay, LMAO, I need to point out that you needed a fucking mod to add more complex commands in the Tactics system so the companions had deeper combat options. Let's not pretend DAO was Baldur's Gate 3 or DOS 2.
@@Kornelius707 Origins did have a deep tactics system for your character and companions, which also carried over to Dragon Age 2 but they ditched the tactical camera, Dragon Age Inquisition brought back the tactical camera but dumbed down the tactics, and in Veilguard they have completely removed the tactics system which fits the definition of dumbed down.
@@kryptomanik They were not comparing DA to BG3 or DOS2 they were comparing it to Veilguard the new upcoming game in the Dragon Age franchise. I think the issue with assassins creed is that they pushed that it's authentic then continued to call people all sorts of things then it all snow balled
The problem with Yasuke is that it's a very real cultural point of contention amongst the Japanese community. Im not going to sit and tell Japanese people that they have no right to be angry about their culture being used as window dressing, whilst not giving it the respectit deserves. I don't see many people debating whether or not George Washington built a magical pyramid in Washington DC and then fought an Assassinn on it.
Also, it's very frustrating how many people are basing their conclusions on very American political views instead of whether what's being done is morally sound For example, if we made an Assassins Creed game set in West Africa with a focus on indigenous people yet made the protagonist a white male and claimed he was just as native as the rest of the African characters, most likely those same people defending Shadows would now be furious with our game
It would be like setting a game in 19th century Africa and having the protagonist to be a British hunter/colonist. It's just blatantly trying to push a narrative and disrespecting the culture it was based on.
@@FeiFongWang I would say more like an African assassin with the white guy helping him. Personally I see no issue if that was the case. The Nioh games started with a white guy. Yasuke was in both as a Samurai. I just don't see the issue imo.

Thanks for the video. Its so true that the many people disliking Bioware and Veilguard are just saying stuff. They aren't actually talking about the game they just want to complain.
Here’s the original quote from game informer. “Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your party."
I've definitely been less than impressed with PC Gamer over the past couple of years- the titles are almost always an ineffective form of click bait, they seem to be incapable of research past a tiktok, and most of what should just be straight reporting is drowning in opinion (E.g. person gets banned on twitch, let me spend three paragraphs explaining why I personally think they're a POS). It's very disheartening, they used to be kind good, but most of their writing staff is being paid to just write multipart tweets disguised as articles, where you can't separate the shortcomings or opinions of the author from the article if you tried.
'Former Dragon Age executive producer and Veilguard consultant Mark Darrah feels Veilguard is the first game where the combat is legitimately fun. "What I see in Veilguard is a game that finally bridges the gap," he says. "Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your party." ' Honestly i think PC Gamer is blowing things out of proportion, but i can see how someone might read that BioWare are trying to downplay the previous games gameplay (and honestly if you read the full thing there are other things they are downplaying about the previous game like the story or companions, but that's how marketing goes i guess), even game informer interpreted as 'the first game where the combat is legit fun'. And no, Mark Darrah just being a 'consultant' does not mean he doesn't represent the team on an interview full of other BioWare members, else don't include him in those interviews. 8:38 That's a ridiculous thing to say. The suspension of disbelief exists on a spectrum, there is only so much you can put until it's broken, and at least for me, it was fun to see how they tried to tie real world history into the 'invisible war' between Assasins and Templars while staying as accurate as they could with it, that's why having protagonists that were no real world historic figures worked the best, not only does it give them more freedom but it feeds into the idea that you're playing as these important figures who will not be remembered by history. The George Washington DLC for AC3 is an alternative timeline btw. 'In this *alternate world*, Connor is and remains Ratonhnhaké:ton. Having never become an Assassin, he must endure new trials, acquiring the skills he'll need to take down a possessed Washington and win freedom for his land once and for all. ' So please stop using it as the typical 'it has always been this way' to dismiss criticism.
I don't like what has been showcased so far... But that has nothing to do with the articles here and there, but the art design, and gameplay design that differed from what we had. For watching playthrough, i saw the PG13esk aspect of veilguard! And even if they improved the textures on the characters. I think they need lot of feedbacks and polish the title. My opinion! Will i play it, for once no pre order on a bioware game!
I watched the recent behind the scenes of Veilguard from Gameinformer I belive and to me it does come across as if they are talking down to their previous games. When they try to hype up how much better the new characters are, it's especially feels very strange. Characters in original game were really good, especially Origins and Inquisition. It feels like they're just throwing a lot of buzzwords and pretend like they're doing something innovative when it's not really anything new. Just recently I saw a trailer of this game Flintlock and I for real through it was a new gameplay from Dragon Age, everything about the design of these two games is just so bland they don't stand apart to me.
Using AC3's DLC is really bad example. This DLC was also done as just pure fun and goofy, and declared non-canon to the overall franchise. AC games never were 100% historically accurate, true, but they always were accurate in some ways, at least if it comes to historical figures. And for those who disagree, I welcome you to explain how the hell did I pass all my history exams in High School and Uni, without reading any book just referring to stuff I saw in AC games and gaps filled by wikipedia. Also, Dragon Age Veilguard looks weird. Fans don't want flashy combat in this game, they want something that forces you to actually think what are you doing, not just mash the buttons.
@@Iceqert Kinda depends what you mean by historical accuracy IMO. I think AC games generally do a pretty solid job of recreating historical cities and landmarks/landscapes to be pretty darn accurate. But when it comes to the people inhabiting the worlds they create? Not so much. I mean even the storyline of the first game revolved around some magic machine that uses your DNA to allow you to relive the memories of your ancestors and ends with a fight over a magical golden orb thing created by a mysterious precursor species lol. Plus the DLC from more recent entires has trended towards the more mythical side of things as well. I don’t have an issue with that (think they are good fun!) but certainly not rooted in history.
@@alcibiadeslives If it comes to myths in AC, we had them in AC Odyssey and AC Origins, both were introduced well, presented mythical creatures people believed in at the time, but these creatures were tied to Fragments of Eden, and were kind of an anomaly. Luke’s logic on the concord pays beta is flawed. It very much was the an indicator of interest because the game is $40 to normally play it and they where give out extra beta key to pre-order. Other games will literally pay-wall early access and it doesn’t affect the number really.
PC Gamer is misrepresenting what the team were saying. The devs are clearly excited and trying to hype up the new game. Darrah is a contractor and was brought on to help get the game across the line (after exec producing DAI and being a senior team member on the other games), so his words do carry weight, but people are doing what they do and letting their biases interpret what they "really meant". BioWare has a reputation for great storytelling and characters, but pretty weak or boring combat, this is them saying "look, we've worked hard to make combat fun!". PC Gamer just wants to generate clicks and a certain group of people are lapping it up. Thank you for bringing some balance!
"BioWare has to win you back." Nah. EA has to win me back. Well not back, I never liked them, they have to win me over. And I'm pretty sure that won't happen. Mass Effect -combat could be fun, but I'm pretty much certain that the game won't have what I want from an rpg. Like depth, players freedom of choice or actual impactful consequences for player choices.
I saw the same tactics when Baldur's Gate 3 launched, and I know why - maybe here is less visible, but Mark Darrah was quite transparent and honest when speaking about DA TV. I don't think he ever meant to say "the combat of the previous games sucks ass, but hey, this is the shit", but this one is more in line with what you would expect from a 2024 RPG that is not Badur's Gate 3. I never got the feeling that he shat on the previous games to hype this one up. These publications like to take out of context the less-corporate talk that Darrah gives sometimes and no, this is totally unfair to share with the world, whether you totally dislike the new Dragon Age or if you loved or not the previous games combat.
Im not a fan of the character design and style, but if the story is good, I'll play it. Theres no need to hate stuff we have very little info about. I wish I could play more DAO in style and tone, but I don't mind different things if they are good. Gotta wait and see
DA origins was amazing story was awesome and I played it in multiple play throughs to get the secret achievements on Xbox 360. Now DA 2 I didn’t enjoy as much but was still a mid tier game but characters where decent and so was the story. DA Inquisition made me feel like it was going back to the OG A but didn’t hit the mark was better than 2 but not 1 and the rifts and the areas where repetitive but story and dlc where helped it a lot.
There is definitely some truth in the idea that Bioware is attempting to distance itself from its older games. I'm talking about character design, world design, enemy design. Anyone remembers Desire demons?... The new Bioware design feels to me a lot more sterile and generic-fantasy-esque.
The desire demons were never intended by the writing team to look how they did in Origins and 2, they intended for them to look like Genies but the art team wasn’t properly informed and modeled them after Succubi (one of the art books touch on this, I think). Inquisition, the first game to have full female nudity and actual full nudity sex scenes, is the first game to have a desire demon that isn’t sexualized (Imshmael). This narrative that BioWare is sanitizing the games just isn’t true.
@@OccultEclipse Maybe. Or maybe those claims are essentially gaslighting. There is definitely an element of sanitization, they even essentially admitted it in regards to the removal of Blood Magic as an option. There are other elements, places like brothels having being removed, etc. It isn't just about Desire demons either, compare older Pride Demons to the generic new ones.
You need to research Assassin's Creed. It has more historical accuracy then you understand. I'm aware it's meant to be fiction, but one alternate history DLC doesn't make the series historically inaccurate. The reason we love these games is that it parallels actual history for that setting.
I have to disagree in one point:not everyone dislikes Veil guard for no reason at all. I was very disappointed by both trailers. For one, dislike the Comic Art style, this is very rough for me to look at because the aesthetic is really not to my taste. This is a legit factor that most likely won't change in the actual game. Second: the dumbed down dialogue wheel. This is looks like I can barely interfere in the action and takes away immersion for me. Three: the combat system. I love strategic gameplay and I'm not a big Fan of Action Game Combat. I easily get overstimulated by all the flashing neon lights and fast paced reaction times in action games, it's stressful to me so I don't play them. I prefer pausing a combat to carefully plan out my steps and attacks, using different abilities and Combos with my companions. So the combat system is also not to my taste. As a longtime Bioware Fan those are legit concerns I have that have nothing to do with a blind hate train. Please have a more differentiated look on people who are critical towards the game. Bioware has so far done nothing to address or smaller our concerns.
I wish Bioware would show more gameplay. What they showed was hacking and slashing, one ability, no comboss with your teammates, and mostly just talking between Rook and friends. This game is coming out this fall and I don't understand why they can't show more. All I read about is the devs saying how cool and fleshed out the companions are. Like, okay. Where is more gameplay? How is the actual game??
Personally I think they don't feel that confident. After all this is a swim or drown situation and with the backlash given on the trailer & afterwards, I feel they don't want it to fall flat on its face.... But that is just how I interpret it. You can show and you can talk...so far we have seen little and heard a lot of talk. But we will have to see what they unveil further won't we. So far the gameplay has not impressed me, but how can it on level 1?
I was on board and totally agreed until around the 7:50 mark. I can't speak for anyone else but no, my distaste for what is being done at Bioware and with Dragon Age does not come from me being an impressionable 15 year old with no real reasoning behind my distaste Lol It comes from being a 30-something life long fan of Bioware and lover of Dragon Age who sees how they've spent nearly a decade creating the most generic and watered down game possible. JUST gameplay-wise we have a copy-pasted Mass Effect system, an obnoxious UI that takes up 80% of the screen just to show you three skills per character (which is down to 3 characters now), we have cheesy mobile-game dodge prompts, a magical barrier that may as well be a door with its "press X to bypass" mechanic, enemies that run harmlessly through the environment instead of attacking, an antagonist who is defeated by pressing X four times and watching a cut scene...and that's JUST GAMEPLAY... I could also talk about the goofy mobile game asthetic or the cringy Marvel-esque dialog. So no, these issues do have merit, there's plenty of them to go around, and I'm sorry if we expect more from a company that's supposed to be the gold standard for RPGs
After their initial rollout of this game and it's companion trailer and prolonged trailer I checked put of this game . I loved this series I loved origins , 2 had a great characters and the whole hawke stuff was unique but not executed well. Inquisition was better tha 2 but man that mmo stuff drags the game down heavily. But characters, story and plot lines getting answered was dope . Combat was decent . This new game ? Idk man . Bioware been dead to me for a long time. I enjoyed the mass effect collection and having a dragon age collection would have been great . Origins need a remaster badly . I'm not confident in this veil guard at all but we will see .
Purely speculation on my side, but pulling back Mark Darrah at a time the development of this game was in trouble sounds a lot like - we are not officially demoting project management, but we are effectively subordinating them to a guy who knows what he is doing. Darrah has been very vocal on his channel about what he calls a “hockey stick development style”, where almost no progress is made for most of the development period, leading to one final push at the end, when everything falls into place. It is ironic that he is doing the same thing all over again. Still, he did this a few times already, which is why he may have been brought back. Anyway, Darrah may have been just a consultant in this, but it feels like upper brass getting a veteran to save a project from failure. I hope I am wrong.
If i wanted a bioware game with shooting id play mass effect, if i wanted more strategy turn based id play dragon age, and if i wanted action id play jade empire.
Well, hopefully the clickbait headline will at least get a few people to open the actual article they're basing it on. Because I think the article may change some peoples' minds. It seems like the devs have really doubled down on a lot of aspects people have claimed for years they love about Dragon Age (lore, companion stories and interactions, faction conflicts, rpg/character build elements, etc.), so people who have judged the game based on only the trailer and first, lowest common denominator gameplay reveal may be surprised.
It only sticks because Bioware ACTIONS show they despise their previous games. Yeah, it's unethical, but Bioware invited this on theirselves by showing CLEARLY who they like and dislike making, playing and enjoying their own games. But hey, wait until release and they will also dislike us for not simply buying the game and shut up.
I feel sorry for all the people who hate what theyve seen of this game. Theyre not getting the Dragon Age game they wanted and that's gotta be a hard pill to swallow. I feel for ya guys. I on the other hand am buzzing and cant wait to play it day one! 😁
Isn't Mark Darrah part of the interview/cover made by Game Informer? It's pretty *disingenuous of you* to play on semantics here. He's an Ex-Bioware who was called back as a consultant for Bioware and spearheading the project that is "The Veilgaurd", his words are representative of the team that is overseeing the project. Therefore he is representative of Bioware's team making the game ... IDK why salty about it.
PC Gamer and bad gaming journalism are synonyms. I'm not liking anything I sawed on dragon age so far. I don't like the action approach, none of the companions aside from harding looked good to me and I generally don't think bioware is bioware, this is now just a name and doesn't mean anything good to me.
I'd say every gaming outlet has very poor journalism or anything interesting to say tbh. Between extreme amounts of clickbait and shill articles/reviews to keep access to demos, previews and review copies... not to mention most of what they publish is copy paste of each other.
I wouldn't be surprised if the sentiment behind the scenes at Bioware is closer to what was printed in that article, no real secret modern game devs tend to resent fans for preferring older games they had nothing to do with and rejecting their work
All the people shitting on this game one, haven't played it so there's that, and two they've been unhappy with dragon age since dragon age 2, and didn't appreciate inquisition. They can swallow a roll of nickels for all I care.
That AC3 DLC your talking about is non canonical dude. Your description of it was completely incorrect. That’s not a good example of the series being historically incorrect, and you’re calling PC Gamer dishonest hah.
i guess i would challenge you to prod me for why i dislike those games im sure i could give better answers than just because i dont like it, and honestly even if most people liked it i still wouldn't, im not talking about dragon age i mean specifically ubisoft titles new ac and new star wars, they have proven to be bad writers thus far but were not before
I JUST read this article and had the same sentiment. Thank you for calling this out with a neutral view. I’m a “hardcore” dragon age fan and I’m excited, so are my friends, and there are so many people hell bent on bringing those that are excited down. Dragon Age has always been inclusive to a degree and those saying that it looks childish are acting the same way as the alleged quality of style… for those that are disappointed please grieve and try let those of us that are excited, be excited, because it’s been 10 years.
@@tami3456 you’re proving my point. I said “alleged” bc I don’t find it childish personally (the gameplay at least, the trailer is another story) If you do, cool.
Luke I really like you but WHO said that Concord sucked because the closed beta had low numbers? EVERY single content creator I saw prefaced what they said about the game. I think you setting up a straw man...
In other words, if people had been like this is the closed beta, probably a sign of what to expect in the open beta, no problem. Saying it's already failed, when it's a closed beta based on those numbers, problem. I agree. I'm getting a bit sick of everything on all sides. I for sure lean a certain direction, but my own side has started to annoy me.
Sorry Luke, but for the first time, i disagree. Have you watched the Video article? Tone adds nuance to this report, and I can see why PC gamer is interpreting things this way.
Yes, you can. Just because some disagree does not mean it is not journalism. Is a differing viewpoint. The presenter of this video is giving his opinion. Is not any more or less valid that opinion of article writer. In the World you describe nothing is anything anymore. Someone might have a differing view. So, all things are invalid. This view is getting old.
You need to do more research. You opinions, as of late, have been ill informed. not just on AC: Shadows controversy or who Mark Darrah is, but your takes on DD2 microtransactions or HD2 on steam requiring a PSN account were ice cold.
Rather see them tackle a sci-fi game or any other setting... there are plenty of fantasy RPGs out there tbh. Besides is very clear one of their next games is going to be a new Divinity title. If they ever get their hands on Fallout or convince someone at Disney to get KOTOR or make a KOTOR3 (idk how that would go with swotor, but i still would love to see it) i will be a very happy man.
Can I just say that you have quickly become one of my favorite RUclipsrs because of your rational conversation and takes. Thank you for being a breath of fresh air.
I liked Origins. I did not like the others. I hated Inquisition. That being said I doubt Darrah would have said what they claim he did. He is too respectful of the past games. More than likely the person who wrote the article was trying to talk up this new game and got carried away. I don't like what I have seen of the new game. I am not impressed. I don't like the combat .I don't like what the game looks like or what the characters look like.I don't like there are only 3 party members in the field of play. Will I buy it ? I need to see something that proves it is worth buying.
@@Kross415 I meant old BioWare. And the point is he’d know more than the people currently working at bioware since they fired most of the people who worked on the prior games.
@@apollodingo3583 Yeah but he's employed right now by BioWare and EA and all he's going to say is obviously positive PR for the new game. I've ''spoken'' to him a bit through his RUclips in the comments and it's plenty clear they have many handicaps working under EA and that's why almost no veterans remain at BioWare, they couldn't make good games anymore and this is no different.
Its clear you're a model of objectivity... and by the way as for knowing if a game will be good or not, with experience, you can tell if a game will be good or not just with what they have shown; it works the same with a movie, with the 5 opening minutes. And this game will be mediocre, as Suicide Squad, mark my words.
The fact that the AC:Shadows drama led to the discovery of Thomas Lockley's big con should be a bigger deal than it is.
PC Gamer has been making a few rage baity articles about DAVe, totally agree with this video.
Nobody is saving this game even someone who’s worked on all the previous games
@JR-cy4xq he's doing an official interview with bioware, he's representing bioware.
@@marilynnbuss3730 I agree with you. In your first comment, though, you implied that Luke was in the wrong for not explaining more who Mark Darrah was. DragonAge Origins also wasn’t an open world. A game with different sections/levels.
I think they went back to that sort of world building. I think they made the right choice because a good open world is harder to make. A game with levels usually can have a more interesting world, because they actually can fill it with life and plan things out how they should be experienced
Until awakening is what everyone remembers as open world because your being chased across the world

😅 hahaha.

@TakaChan569
I full agree with the first part of your message, but I will never be embarrassed to be a gamer.
Necromancy isnt a blood Magic replacement tho. It existed in previous games
So....EA and Bioware copyright striked my video since i guess my views on the game were not so positive and also got my old channel terminated, watch the video about this on this new channel and to my fellow content creators, please be carefull, EA is out for blood with this new release,
Blood magic is rampant in tevinter tho, it should be the norm to have an option to use it.
Tevinter is known for blood magic it happens so often it accidentally happens
Even Dorian talks about how often it happens for it not to be an option for someone who lives there
My thing is, people act like origins is the best gameplay, and yet, a lot of long term fans say they liked it in SPITE OF the combat. Now, folks who worked on the game are saying they made an active effort to ensure the combat was on the level that they would like, and people twist their words like this….
Thanks Luke. Very reasonable. Ive seen no reason to think this game bad. Infact, every word BW say translates to "we have listened"
Are you joking or being serious
that's a very charitable take which in current year seems pretty insane, with slop after slop coming from triple A every year. I think it's time for consumers to be more demanding of their games and wait and see before just buying crap.
Thank you for continually pointing this kind of thing out. Not only has this kind of biased article system gotten too common, but DA:Ve has especially been a victim of these kind of misleading think pieces and reporting. This is one man's opinion. But you jump right on the bandwagon. The article is dishonest. Maybe this guy is being dishonest. Maybe everyone will make up their own mind.
No it’s not.

Look at all the work they did with the earlier AC games to make sure they were accurate and, more importantly, felt accurate and fulfilled a fantasy
That's the actual issue with AC shadows it doesn't appeal to the wanted fantasy of being a samurai.
I mean in Origins and Valhalla you fight mythical figures. It's basically historical fantasy.
@Zoggwogg yea, the games really fell off. I tried to clarify the earlier games.
I am just curious is all
Im glad you called this out, pcgamers coverage of Dragon Age has been some of the most dishonest and bad faith ive seen.
This game has some VERY obvious rage bait surrounded by it
I tried Origins just this week, can't disagree about the clunky combat, but no one can tell me they didnt intent to make this game character focused???
Its super character focused. 70% of the time you standing there, talking or listening to the characters talk. I love it, cause thats my vibe... but nah. That's a mess of a paraphrase to claim the soul of the game...wasnt intentional. If not that, what was?
I think what's important to realize is that Bioware never said "We are about telling stories through characters" out loud. It was something they do but not saying that out loud and not saying it consistently leads to games like Anthem. Where there is very little "telling stories through characters". All of what they said means is that they are using that as a guiding light to make the experience cohesive.

Origins combat is literally broken
While I somewhat agree, I won't survive >5 hours of hack'n'slash gameplay, so this can't be dismissed.

This is a good call out. More should be this anal about game reviews and articles.
There are enough gamers paying more for a game and preordering it, only to be able, to play a beta (D4?). So in a way, even a closed beta is a good indicator, how the real game will perform.
But they have to be invested thsts why COD4,Diablo,halo never had this problem

@MrDay53 DAO combat still had its hiccups though, it wasn't all fine and dandy.
@@TheNightman. That's what I'm saying 😂
Also, it's very frustrating how many people are basing their conclusions on very American political views instead of whether what's being done is morally sound
For example, if we made an Assassins Creed game set in West Africa with a focus on indigenous people yet made the protagonist a white male and claimed he was just as native as the rest of the African characters, most likely those same people defending Shadows would now be furious with our game
It would be like setting a game in 19th century Africa and having the protagonist to be a British hunter/colonist. It's just blatantly trying to push a narrative and disrespecting the culture it was based on.

It's very disheartening, they used to be kind good, but most of their writing staff is being paid to just write multipart tweets disguised as articles, where you can't separate the shortcomings or opinions of the author from the article if you tried.
Yep.. click bait, that’s about all outlets like PC Gamer are good for anymore.
Yeah article is there to make poeple mad so they click on it.
PC Gamer was my first gaming magazine decades ago. Sad to see it has worsen to this degree
You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your party." '
Honestly i think PC Gamer is blowing things out of proportion, but i can see how someone might read that BioWare are trying to downplay the previous games gameplay (and honestly if you read the full thing there are other things they are downplaying about the previous game like the story or companions, but that's how marketing goes i guess), even game informer interpreted as 'the first game where the combat is legit fun'.
The road to Veilguard is feeling more and more like the road to DA2... press a button and something awesome happens bs lite.
I miss the tone of origins, my favorite rpg of all time.
It's still good representation of the history with sci-fi spin to it if you ask me.
didn’t the pope have magic and Davinci have battle tanks?
@@FaticusDolphinius we also fist fight the pope in the vatican at the end of AC2...my history teacher must have skipped that part for some reason because AC is the definite represenation of past events as we all know
@Iceqert
I'd argue that most of the core fan base of Dragon Age doesn't really give a shit about that combat at all. We mostly care about story, characters, customization options, and setting. The combat has never been the drawing feature of these games.
I’m playing Inquisition and the combat sucks. It’s not Bioware, but at least regarding DAI is not wrong.
The game at this point is giving Saint Row reboot and that is not good at all!
Mark knows they'll never make a "golden age BioWare" game ever again under EA. They're not free to do their thing because EA only cares about growing and pleasing shareholders and not making good games and that's why all veterans left.
All he said is pure PR and he knows, he's more honest on his RUclips comment section than on an interview forced by contract to speak good things about the game.
And you're basing this on what? This is a single player, narrative-driven game, so what freedom exactly do you think EA are taking away from Bioware??
@@Geohillierneo Ticking DºEºI boxes, narrative direction, marketing, focusing heavily on certain demographics hence the simplification of most systems in the game at the expense of people that enjoyed the old BioWare games, forcing them to develop on Frostbite... There's plenty of things EA can force upon BioWare in detriment of their games' quality, that's the reason most veterans left as I mentioned.
I based this on experience and Mark's own words as I also mentioned, he has a RUclips channel and I commented on all this there.
And for the record I don't blame everything on EA on 2024 because BioWare is not what it was but EA is 100% responsible for their downfall.
Damned RUclips deleting comments...
@@Kross415 When you say people that enjoyed old Bioware Games, I have to admit I'm more of a Mass Effect fan than Dragon Age, though I do really enjoy the Dragon Age lore, and for me, as long as that's still there, and the story gets continued in a satisfying way then I'm happy. Like I say, I've always preferred Mass Effect, and I love the combat from them, so this feels like a "best-of-both-worlds" situation to me. As long as they tell a great story, and it's fun to play, and they don't start introducing battle passes or multiplayer, or Micro Transactions then that's all I care about.
"BioWare has to win you back."
Nah.
Wait. You don't like EA? But I bought you both tickets to see Hamilton in Tahoe.
dragon age origins is my favorite game of alltime and Inquisition is also really high on my list. The story was legendary and the combat was great.
@@someonefromthefuture5269 No, the “claims” don’t fit your artificially constructed narrative so you’re just dismissing it lmao.
@@OccultEclipse Sure, "trust me bro".
I can't speak for anyone else but no, my distaste for what is being done at Bioware and with Dragon Age does not come from me being an impressionable 15 year old with no real reasoning behind my distaste Lol
It comes from being a 30-something life long fan of Bioware and lover of Dragon Age who sees how they've spent nearly a decade creating the most generic and watered down game possible.
The only good dragon age game was Origins tbh, I do find it odd that PC Gamer is trying to manufacture drama on the anti-side.
My intrested peaked for DA vanguard
Well, hopefully the clickbait headline will at least get a few people to open the actual article they're basing it on. Because I think the article may change some peoples' minds. It seems like the devs have really doubled down on a lot of aspects people have claimed for years they love about Dragon Age (lore, companion stories and interactions, faction conflicts, rpg/character build elements, etc.), so people who have judged the game based on only the trailer and first, lowest common denominator gameplay reveal may be surprised.
Appreciate the honest and fair assessment.
Remake of DA origin's will be grate
Just another reason to stop reading anything from mainstream gaming journos.
I feel sorry for all the people who hate what theyve seen of this game. Theyre not getting the Dragon Age game they wanted and that's gotta be a hard pill to swallow. I feel for ya guys. I on the other hand am buzzing and cant wait to play it day one! 😁

He's an Ex-Bioware who was called back as a consultant for Bioware and spearheading the project that is "The Veilgaurd", his words are representative of the team that is overseeing the project.
