I bought the Atoma at Amazon for $69, was looking at the DMT 8x3 Dia-Sharp 95, $134, would of blew it if i would have bought it. My friend has a DMT and the stones stick which is ridiculous, I use the Atoma on all of my expensive Shapton glass stones and it is the best!

Good tip on putting the lapping plate on the holder when bevelling the stone edges. Might want to add you only need TINY/none pressure on the diam plate when lapping, just enough for the entire surface to contact. I do the stone edges/corners bevelling less aggressively, I'm worried it might chip off the ceramics and the chip will only get bigger as time goes.
The Shapton Pros are excellent stones depending on what you are Sharpening. The finer stones tend to require more pressure, however I like the 1500 stone, the 2000 stone, and the 5000 stone. The 1000 stone I didn't care for. The slurry stones work excellent on the Shapton Pros. I hope this helps!

Yes you can use it on a #320 stone however it will cause your stone to cut less aggressive initially. I recommend the #140 grit Atoma on stones under 2k and the #400 Atoma for stones over 2k in grit rating. Hope this helps. Stay sharp!🤙
I chamfer the corners of the water stone at a 45 degree angle to avoid chipping the water stone while it's being handled. Also, if you are sharpening knives or straight razors, as you are sharpening them, it keeps the blade from cutting into the edge and damaging the blade that you are sharpening.
Depends how hard the stone is that you are Sharpening off of. generally the harder the stone the less likely it is to dish out and need lapping. Hundreds of knives can sharpened off of a stone if it is a quality stone and well-maintained by the user. I hope this helps thanks for watching🤙

As of yet i haven't found a lapping stone that outperforms the Atoma. i haven't lapped a 20k stone with it. i would recommend trying the Atoma 1200 for a stone as fine as 20k. If you were lapping a 15k-30k stone that was dished out fairly heavy, i would lapp them first with the Atoma 400 and finish them with the Atoma 1200. I hope that helps.
@@kutaboveperfection Agreed, I just watched a guy who lapped a stone that took about 45 minutes and wondered why he didn't start with lower grits first, kind of like the grit progression when honing a straight. I now use the Atoma 140 grit for my lower grit range stones under 2000 grit and love it. It’s a faster stone for lapping. I hop I answered your question. Thanks!
After having this lapping plate for over a year and using a lot I must tell you that if you buy it you will love it, I have expensive Japanese knives, and I have the Shapton glass stones, the 500-2000-8000- 10000 and the 16000. This lapping plate is exactly what you need if you are thinking of getting any type of s tones

Sorry, I did not notice your comment sooner. However, to answer the question that you asked, I use this Atoma a couple of times per day for lapping and its held up well for over a year and a half and still going strong.
It can, however, I'd use the Atoma 140 grit stone for any stone with that low of a grit rating. I'm currently using the 140 Atoma and love it for lapping my stones.
Do you have anything against sharpening cutting edges directly on a diamond lapping plate? Also, after years of use, have you noticed any wear on the surface of the plate. In other words, has the lapping plate gone out of flat? Thanks for the review!
ChrisCas - Tool Aficionado As far as diamond lapping plates for Sharpening purposes, I think the finer diamond stones work very well however the courser diamond stones are a little too aggressive , making deep scratches hard to remove in your Sharpening progressions. I like to use diamond paste and sprays for finishing / stropping final cutting edges. As far as keeping your stones flat used for lapping as long as you try to use the whole face of the plate at all times they don’t really go out of flat when used that way. Yes these diamond stones do wear out but it can take a while up to a few years to do so. I hope this answered your questions. Thanks!
I'd never buy anything from a company who sells you only 1/4 inch thick of whetstone. They must be laughing all the way to the bank. I wonder how long it will last if you keep flattening it with that diamond plate. Probably not long.

Great video, I have a Shapton ceramic 12000. Which Atoma do you think would be best for lapping it, a 400, 600 or 1200?
Glad you found the video helpful! You can start off with the 600 grit and finish with the 1200 grit for the best results🤙

Yes, you could use the140 grit stone as well, but not recommended for the finer stone lapping.

The water stone was thin because I used it every day several times a day. However, as I mentioned in the video it was time for it to be replaced.
