    This was the first ever feature length animated movie done entirely on computers. While the quality of the animation doesn't hold up by 2024 standards, in 1995 it was revolutionary.

  • @LolPleb
    @LolPleb 2 дня назад +6

    For context, I saw this as an adult in 1995 and it was still a revolution, everyone was talking about it. Pixar took a giant leap forward here in the history of animation which everyone else (Disney included, they didn't make it) then had to wake up to. Pixar then went on a run of further pushing the boundaries of 3D animation with almost every film - Bugs/Nature, Furry Monsters, Fish in Water, Anthropomorphic Robots, until finally nailing real human lives (and dogs!) in Up.
    I don't love the Toy Story films as much as some people because of the kids' subject matter - Wall-E is my classic, a beautiful masterpiece - and making four of them is ridiculous - but you have to recognise how important this one was.

    • @VerowakReacts
      @VerowakReacts  2 дня назад

      Wall-E was just perfect! I remember You Story being a big deal in more ways than one yeah, and that Pixar became a well known company afterwards

    14:12 Yes. It was. Why does EVERYONE who watches this on youtube not understand that they were clearly showing that Woody was trying to knock Buzz behind the dresser where he would be fine, and that it WAS a complete accident that he ended up out of the window. There's a big difference between him landing still in the house somewhere where he could easily walk out from under AFTER Andy had left, versus being trapped outside which Woody DIDN'T mean to do to him. They were showing that Woody was never so much of a jerk that he would throw him out of the house entirely, he was just going to inconvenience Buzz for just a little while, just long enough to distract Andy.

    I always imagine Steve Jobs at the quarterly meetings giving the Pixar team notes.
    Steve Jobs: " I've just watched the latest cut of Toy Story, and I've got to say, there's something here. But we need to dig deeper."
    Pixar Team: "..."
    Steve Jobs: "Look, this isn't just about toys coming to life. It's about belonging, about finding your place in a world that's constantly changing. Woody's fear of being replaced by Buzz? That's universal. It's human."
    Steve Jobs: "When Woody feels left behind, make us feel that abandonment. I want every kid - and every adult - watching this to remember what it felt like to be left out, to be forgotten."

    When this came out it was unlike anything we'd ever seen before. It was the first realistic (relatively speaking) 3D animated film ever. Before Toy Story we had some shows like Beast Wars and Reboot that had what I've always considered to be somewhat more 80s graphics. They could've done Toy Story rendering since years before the film was actually released but rendering all of that lighting and geometry was so expensive on the hardware back then. Nowadays you could render Toy Story on your phone in realtime - just have all of the geometry and animation data and your phone could play the whole film for you, calculating the pixel RGB values on-the-fly. It would be a much smaller set of data than an actual video file of the film - and you can render it at any resolution you want! Yeah, Toy Story really changed things, and then a few short years later we started seeing more 3D CGI in films, which has only gotten better. I still see rubbery-animated humans even in films today that look like they were made 20 years ago, but there's still plenty of quality CGI humans in shows/films that are indistinguishable from The Real McCoy nowadays. It all goes back to Toy Story - and a bit before that a bit with James Cameron's endeavors (the T-1000 robut in Terminator 2, the "water weenie" in The Abyss, etc). Toy Story, to my mind, really gave a destiny-defining boost to the employment of 3D computer rendering and animation in the visual story-telling mediums though, in a hugely tectonic fashion. It's done so very well and I am proud of it.

    I enjoyed your reaction, but this film, like most of the early Pixar films, had after-credits. I would like to see your reaction to those as well.

    As someone who just started playing with physical toys after barely ever using them as a kid, I would highly recommend it. I felt an almost immediate spike in my overall mood, my bunny Turnip is the best $30 I've ever spent.
    If playing pretend with them seems like a lot, just cuddling them, carrying them around, talking to them is a great place to start getting more familiar.

    Interesting you think it looks like it could pass for something made a few years ago. It looks very dated to me. Toy Story 2 looks much better. The deformations in the face expressions is the most obvious improvement.

      It could also be a stylistic choice if it was done nowadays. The mouth movement was the one thing that was off, but everything else is so well done

    I've noticed you've referred to Disney several times in these Pixar reactions, but Pixar was not originally part of Disney. They were acquired by Disney in 2006, which was 11 years after this movie. And that date, not coincidentally, was around where the quality of Pixar's films started to decline. _WALL-E_ and _Up_ were the last original films that were up to Pixar's traditional standard; after that, everything has either been soulless cash-grab sequels or preachy woke garbage. Alas.
