Love your videos. Your classic strategy videos were what excited me to bring down the box from the attic and start playing the game with my son.

Hey GC, I think we may have spoken several years ago in email etc about your alternate move with G1 (we were looking to have a game online at the time). Firstly, those probability chits you put down through your vid were really, really interesting. I'm not sure how or why this approach to tactical discussion videos isn't the standard. Very cool. It's heartening to see the number literally in front of you for very familiar match-ups in R1. And props for discussing the % of a 1-round wipeout, as well as the mix of options with G1 air units.
Only my opinion so I'll speak unequivocally for expediency, but I still believe the fixation of your G1 strategy on Egypt and the imperative to control Africa basically half a turn earlier isn't worth the cost of doing so on other parts of the board. My G1 open follows DR's essays, I think the major difference betwen the two perspectives is that you place a higher value on retaining zero air unit casualties as the Axis player. Whenever I play Axis I always go into the G1 turn with balls the size of melons, and an expectation that my goals might cost me 1 fighter, even 1 fighter and 1 bomber. If there is no Allied naval threat for a couple of turns, Germany doesn't need all its air units that it starts with. It only trades (from memory) Ukraine back and forth and it really only needs a few fighters to do that, the rest is gravy.
Assuming perfect execution of the Egypt sea-land battle and that you get Egypt with minimal loss, you're only a couple of dollars ahead of Don Rae-standard. Your strat wants Africa quicker as well as have 6 air units intact so that you can (presumably) not have to replace them and instead bulk up on infantry. I question what you get out of that. Once you allow the Allied fleet to survive R1, they are going to live on that ocean forever. The trouble for this kind of manouevre is that Germany goes second. When Allied-me sees the Germans ignore the pain of clearing the UK seazone, the IC in India flips to 1x AC and 1x Fighter on UK1. US1 they start the shuck with the standard DR buy and bolster the UK fleet with 1 trans and a couple of infantry. From that point, the risk to Germany in the West is constant and existential. Worse, the much earlier requirement for Germany to bolster Western Europe lowers Germany's threat to Karelia, and that's really bad for Japan. Russia will have the flexibility (given the presence of Allied infantry in Karelia by turn 3) to slow Japan, who really needs to be able to use DR's push mechanic to advance to Moscow and that's contingent on really there being not much resistance.
Any extra income acquired by the move will be subsumed by the need for Germany to reinforce Western Europe in G2, because losing Western Europe with an Allied 1-2 punch means your own AA guns will be firing at your intact airforce when you try to take it back.
Africa will always be taken back by the Allies if and when they need it. But the Egypt G1 strategy starts the shitstorm for Germany at least 2 turns earlier than need be, Western Europe needs serious defense in G2 non-combat, drawing focus away from Karelia. Germany has to be ready to smash Karelia at the very first available opportunity, else Russia will be really painful somewhere else. Having to protect WE in force as early as G2 would make the Russian player so euphoric that he might pull out his shiny dark brown Aircraft Carrier and start stroking it longingly, thinking that maybe today's the day.
Looking forward to watching the rest of your episodes, I really enjoyed our discussion when we spoke last time. This game is a very special pastime for me, it's nice to be thinking about the probability distributions of G1 in this philosphical context without the spectre of shit rolls hanging darkly overhead ;)

I recommend the video in this series called "Waltzing n' Sunny Skies" as well as "Is AnA Classic Imbalanced or Broken Part III". For expediency, I will also sound unequivocal: I can see you're in the Don Rae rut and I have a hard time forgiving the damage those essays did to players and to this amazing game overall. When you say Germany "trades Ukraine back and forth" in particular, I wince. If that is what you think is best for Germany, nearly everything else you say makes sense and I agree with you. But for expediency, I will say this is just not maximizing how to play as Germany on the east front. Of the many strategic concepts missed by the DR essays missed, this is the most critical. I feel strongly that once the Waltz concept is understood and exercised in a few games, a lot of the confusion about this particular German opener will dissipate. To that end, I would love to offer you a friendly game(s) if you'd like me to demonstrate how it all works over the board. Or you can email or skype me if you want to discuss further: ryanvoz(at)yahoo.com or ryan.voznick on skype or you’re of course more than welcome to continue here in this thread.

Nice presentation, I like seeing the detailed stats
I believe Egypt is sometimes won with just the 1 infantry and 1 tank blitz/attack, I add 1 fighter to help, one fighter over the English sub, no battleship combat while the transport attacks either caucus or turkey ( no retreating here for English sub)
If Egypt is won, no dice roll is required to sink the English sub because it has no available retreat space (auto kill). Bomber & sub hit battleship with 3 fighters, sub & transport on the main English fleet. It's almost a waste not attacking with the German battleship, amphibious into Gibraltar with a submarine build allows ignoring the English submarine, only the English bomber can threaten the German battleship and transport in Gibraltar

That would more than likely spell the end of German involvement in Africa before the end of round 1 though. The Allies could both retake Egypt and sink the unprotected German transport relatively easily.

I love your videos. They really have helped me think differently in strategy and overall how to play the game. I do have a question and a video idea. My question is while I totally understand the need and reason for taking out the British battleship at Gibraltar would it be better to use your submarine to take out the American transport off of Eastern U.S. so that the British and American cannot both land troops in Africa on turn 1? I would also love to see you do a series on a round 2 strategy. I know this is harder to predict based on battles and troop purchases, but would love to see how you counter most typical (or at least what you find other people doing) in round 1.

The main reason I take the German sub on the attack against the UK battleship is to reduce the risk of losing a German fighter. The USA transport hitting Africa on USA1 would split the fleets in the Atlantic. In other words, is that transport by itself? If not, what’s around the UK? With the Luftwaffe at or near full strength, there are probably attack opportunities out there…

As to Round 2 and beyond, check out the first 10-12 videos in this channel. I still advocate for them - my opening strategies and long range goals have changed very little

Is it possible that you cut very small parts out of your video? The video flackers at the end of each argument/point in your webcam part. It is a bit tiresome for my eyes. But the rest is great as always.

Hey thanks! To the question you pose: I feel that killing the UK battleship is important to the potential longevity of the German fleet in the Mediterranean. And since both Western allies can so easily land troops in Africa so quickly, its more interesting to me to safely remove that UK boat and let the US transport go (that's a 75% chance of win btw). But I wouldn't discourage giving it a try if you're game. Sometimes there are second and third order effects that aren't so obvious until you do them. For example, without using the optional rule about naval unit placement, the US player would not be able to place US boats in the East Coast sz if that German sub were there. This would force him to attack the German ship with one of his planes to try to clear it. There is a sort of butterfly effect that occurs with certain moves - I hope that makes sense. As to your video recommendation, what I have up right now is still what I do in every game I play. If it changes, I will post another video for sure. Here is the axis mid/long game strategies I use: ruclips.net/video/AnJReTMIlU8/видео.html Check out the beginning of the channel for more info though. I watch my own vids from time to time to make sure they're still in line with my play style and thought process.
