I maintained Tristars for 25 years they were fantastic aircraft well ahead in technology when they entered service. Super easy to maintain as long as you were properly trained, unlike the many who hated them, who were probably not adequately trained.
I was fortunate enough to fly in the L-1011 a few times back in the mid 70’s. I believe it was either Delta or Eastern, but most likely Delta. I was only about 15, but already an aviation geek! The pilot allowed me to take pictures in the cockpit during a layover in Atlanta and actually left me ALONE in there for a couple minutes. I’ll never forget it and still have the pictures!

My first ride in an airplane was in 1979. We flew Eastern Airlines from Boston to Orlando in a L1011. I absolutely fell in love with the experience of flying.
I used to work fro Trans World Airlines as Fleet Service Helper. That meant servicing the lavatory's at the flight line. I worked afternoons and when the shift was over i would sit as close as possible to the runway's and wait for the cargo planes to leave. DC-10 and L1011's. Loved that sound....!!!
I swear Rolls-Royce are the top specialists when it comes to making nice-sounding engines. Considering the next generations of engines they've made, always been the best sounding across every era.
When I was a kid I would hear that distinctive sound of those RB211’s spooled up and would run to the front of my grandparents house about 3 miles from Buffalo/Niagara International to see that Eastern L1011 roar bye. How I loved that sound and loved watching those big boys takeoff. This great video of the L1011 takes me back to those days and great memories. 🛫 👍
This vid exceeded my expectations. I came to the site in hopes of finding a historic vid of one taking off and landing. But no...BAM, right on top, this HD vid taken from an awesome vantage point. In Jr. High in the late '70s, I was a huge commercial aircraft fan, having built maybe 6-8 of the more popular aircraft of the period. Even at 15, the L-1011 was my favorite. On one occasion, likely flying out of San Diego's Lindberg Field, the flight out to MI on Delta originally had us on a 707 or 727. But they made a last minute change to an otherwise not-busy Tristar. I was ecstatic. I hadn't yet flown on one and it just couldn't have been a sweeter surprise. I'm now 57 and recently bought a 1:48th scale Corsair model kit. And received just last week, a rare Entex 1:100th scale L-1011 model kit, produced in 1975 and everything including the box looks virtually new. I'm not sure I can build it. I surely *must* have one built and visually appreciable. But I'm thinking to buy another, storing the one in the best condition and build/display the other. Like most of us Tristar fans, we love that rear center engine. Just by looking at it (rear corner POV is my preference), it makes itself well understood as always up to engage in some exceedingly serious jet engine thrust production. So scoring a relatively large model so I can more thoroughly visually absorb it, believing it's quite possibly the coolest commercial aircraft of the last 50 years...is a good thing. Great vid (and the one of the tour of the cabin).
L-1011, just a beautiful "Heavy"! Remember flying one BOS/SJU on Eastern in the 70's, First Class. It was my first "wide-body" experience and I was amazed. I recall their engines were a bit finicky for cold-starts in frigid temperatures. One morning out of SYR I saw them open an engine cowling and hit something with a hammer (break up ice collection?) and presto, it finally started! They were a great ride and well built with more safety redundances than the DC-10.
Fabulous turbo fan sound. As a kid I once had a short flight on a Continental L 1011. Lax to MSY but shortly after takeoff over the pacific they told us we would be making an emergency landing back at LAX. They dumped the fuel and prepared for the landing. My mother was terrified and if memory serves me correctly, there was an issue with the flaps not retracting. I was only about 8-9 years old at the time. Once we landed safely and we deplaned out on end of runway but by the trucks with stairs. I know the fire paramedics and such were all there. I still remember we came into landing very fast and used up a lot of runway. My mother never flew Continental nor another L-1011 again. She still alive and has flown all over the world for travel. I love flying and will hop on a plane in a second. Also in 1976 or so I flew from Modesto Ca to LAX in a Untied 707 and was lucky enough to sit in cockpit when landing. Those days are long gone and I'm not sure if it was even really allowed at that time, but the airline industry was totally different then today. Passengers actually dressed up and all the flight attendants were female.

You meant a Continental DC 10. Continental never operated the L1011. They had plans to purchase them but delays by rolls Royce caused them to go with the dc 10. Still a great story nevertheless!

Nice! Especially when teamed with those Rolls-Royce RB211 engines! Talk about a SMOOTH flying plane! I actually got some sleep while aboard these back in the day - Something I could NEVER do on a rickety DC-10!
I had the privilege and honor of flying in a L-1011 in 1998 from Toronto Canada to Athens Greece onboard Air Transat... Probably my most memorable flight... That sounds and that awesome cruising speed! ... I've done that flight countless times and that L1011 still holds the record at 8 hours 54 minutes. The L1011 symbolized the golden era of flying, when flying held a certain prestige when every seat was cushioned for total comfort and had an ashtray and the airline food was actually good, because we lived in better times.... Seems like planes are getting slower and alot more uncomfortable with these transit bus style seats, all they care about is profits. Make the seats smaller, less leg room, jam as many seats into an aircraft as possible, charge an arm and a leg for baggage, serve disgusting barely eatable food, charge extra for drinks and then fly slow... There was a time people hoped their flights were longer because they enjoyed being on the plane... Now people can't wait to get off the plane.... How sad.
Not sure what this "TriStar Experience" was used for exactly, but the logo on the tail indicates that it was used (formerly?) as The Flying Hospital. Maybe it was in the midst of being converted to The Flying Hospital. A fantastic, post-commercial use for these airliners once the airlines decided to sell away their L-1011s and "upgrade" ...The other two post-commercial uses for the L-1011 were The Royal Air Force (UK) who used them as refueling stations for their other aircraft and Orbital ATK, who were able to attach a satellite-launching missile to the underside of the TriStar, released in flight! These birds deserve to be in use, they are strong, overbuilt, have redundant systems, and plenty of life left in them! The airlines were crazy to get rid of them.
That Lockheed 1011 Tristar was the competition of the Douglas DC-10 do you remember by the year 1977? Eastern Air lines used to fly one of them. Also Transworld Airlines TWA and PanAm.
What a machine , when I was a kid a British airtours Tristar used to land here at Leeds Bradford airport every Monday , I always watched out for it , one actually overshot the runway aswell , anyway , great video, 👍👍👍

How sad.
Best airliner ever to grace the skies!
She still has it where it counts! Way to go Tri-star!
That distinctive deep note on takeoff brought back many memories circa 1987. Flew many on EAL JFK-MIA which flew thru to SJU.
The first time I ever flew was in a Tri-Star, from London Gatwick to Tangiers, Morocco. The acceleration down the runway was insane!
I remember when Royal Jordanian used to fly them and I been on it back in the 90's!
Love the L-1011! The engines sound like the TF-39s on the C-5 Galaxy. Awesome!
The great Rolls Royce engines on the legendary L'1011.
That Lockheed 1011 Tristar was the competition of the Douglas DC-10 do you remember by the year 1977? Eastern Air lines used to fly one of them. Also Transworld Airlines TWA and PanAm.
Super duper! Thanks a million for uploading 🙏👍
What a beautiful, graceful bird. I wish that Lockheed still made commercial jets - I wouldn’t be so afraid to climb aboard one.
Wow 😮 😢I’m glad she Returned to the Sky where this beautiful plane ✈️ belong
Absolutely fantastic sound
Gotta love the sound of that Tristar growl.
What a machine , when I was a kid a British airtours Tristar used to land here at Leeds Bradford airport every Monday , I always watched out for it , one actually overshot the runway aswell , anyway , great video, 👍👍👍
Quem ainda tá ouvindo esse ronco no fim de 2019?...
I had never heard of this plane until today when I noticed something unusual in one of my fly tickets; the aircraft model had quite a long and distinct name 🤔.?
I am very excited to know that I will have this rare opportunity in two weeks!
The RB211, the little engines that could.
