In this song, Quadeca died and is watching his mom as a spirit, watching her cope with his death and seeing how she doesn’t light candles anymore for his birthday, tries to tell herself he wasn’t born yesterday and moves on but he knows she’s lying and is still crying/sad inside about his passing/suicide etc in which he regrets on not delaying a specific date (which caused his death) because if he did...he would still be with his loved ones and not in the afterlife alone...also the tapes are connected to the good memories with her and follows him around and finally wraps around him (like how memories stick with you forever in life and death) and now he’s stuck in the afterlife and wants to be with her while a voice in his head is saying “you want her, you need her, she no longer needs you” which causes him to panic and start slamming on the doors or walls trying to get out of the afterlife and have someone hear him but they can’t...he’s forever dead...
In the “living realm” his family is probably getting a cold feeling that someone’s (Quad) watching them and is getting scared/haunted but in reality...it’s Quadeca who’s scared of being stuck in the afterlife with nobody being able to hear him knocking for help...hence the title of the album...

Bruh you’re smart af if u picked that out of the song. But seeing this makes the song hit 10x deeper. Quadeca needs more recognition and is by far my favourite artist.
@@jacobvincent3881 took several listens, at first I thought the mom died, but then asked myself “then why is Quad dressed as a spirit?” Why is he knocking on houses like he wants someone to hear him? Then suddenly an “ah ha” moment came up...Quadeca died and he’s spectating/watching how everyone is moving on and now he’s wishing he delayed that “date/suicide or cause of death” so he can be with his loved ones but he’s stuck in the afterlife forever...hence the album title: “I didn’t mean to haunt you”

@@TaylorLaFountain Personally, Sisyphus just hits me way harder and will always be the better song. The ending is just the craziest thing I’ve ever heard I’ll never forget the goosebumps I got from hearing it.
Quad himself has confirmed that this song, as well as the rest of IDMTHY is told through the perspective of a ghost.
This sorta just implies that the theory of Quad being “dead” and watching and reflecting on how others (in this case, probably his mother) are mourning and coping with his death is true.
This is pretty clearly seen with lyrics like “you said i’m in a better place” and “i’ve been in so many prayers”
Hard idea, wonder how the production on the rest of the album sounds

@@timob1681 it’s why i think it the feeling of “regret” will be one of the biggest concepts the album addresses. The thought that he could’ve done more, the things he wished he said or done, he can’t do anymore and it holds him back from truly coming to terms with death.
This song is about him dying and looking at his mother mourning it so deep once you realise he is a ghost and the things he saying, like I wasn't born yesterday, your god damn lying because his mother is acting like she is fine but he knows she's in pain... Remarkable song 🔥🔥🔥

Quad is becoming an auteur at this point. He's a musical genius and an expert at storytelling between the lines. This is about quad being dead, and him reacting to people getting over his death

I feel that the candles stands for him mourning someone he lost and the tape is the memories of that person playing back.
Quadeca would be a good movie director for a horror movie with his own instrumentals in it too

Quad might lost some of his rap fans with this new direction he's going in. It's way more indie folk, shoegazey pop type stuff than he's ever done. And his music is getting harder to understand but that is not a bad thing. He's becoming more cryptic because he is becoming more prolific and poetic. The best songwriters of all time always had lines and meanings people debated over. It sounds like he's making music that he understands first and foremost and that really means something to him and it's up to us to interpret it. Which is better than spoon feeding you answers, there's nothing wrong with ambiguity in fact I think it's great. Quadeca's always been talented but this song is more layered both musically and from a songwriting standpoint than anything he's ever created. I have no doubt this is his best song yet and that he will only get better as time goes on. He truly is becoming a beautiful poetic songwriter and I'm so excited about it.

tbh i prefer that style than the rap. this song made me so emotional it's crazy.
My theory is that the song represents a melodramatic breakdown going on in Quadecas head.
“She no longer needs you” sounds like a voice in Quadecas head to me and “I think you’re goddamn lying” could be him refusing to believe any reason other than that of the voice in his head.
I think the music video symbolizes the loss of innocence; with the clips of young quadeca having his first experience with media -the tape, to now with the tape wrapping around him maybe meaning that the media influence on his life has held him back from truly living his own life.
Bro this song's concept is wild. I also love that quadeca is constantly evolving and experimenting.

I feel like the tapes are symbolic of his memories of his mom and the radio is his trying to communicate with his mom but the inherent disconnect between memories and reality are driving him crazy because he needs to move on but also can’t because he can’t imagine what it would be like if he was in her position watching him move on from losing her and the memories that they had together

Everybody getting these theories backwards. In this song it isn't about Quad missing his dead mother. It's about DEAD Quad missing his ALIVE mother.
The album is titled "| didn't mean to haunt you" and homie is legit dressed like a damn ghost. WAKE UP PEOPLE. It's a unique take on a song about losing a family member from a reversed perspective. The lines
"I've been in so many tears... I've been in so many prayers... etc." It's literally about him having to witness people mourn his death while he's a ghost. And if that wasn't enough for you, he also says, "I got new birthday to celebrate" This is his birth into the afterlife, also referred to as rebirth by many. Still not enough for you? He deadass says, "I've been trying to unsee how you moved on from me." He's watching his mother move on from mourning his death.
The main chorus of "| wasn't born yesterday, I think you're goddamn lying" is about him watching his mother cope with his death and pretend she is okay.
But Quadeca isn't stupid, he knows his mother is hurting and he knows that she is lying to herself and everyone else. This isn't me grasping at straws either he legit says, "You said it happened for a reason, I swear to God, I think you're goddamn lying". He knows that his mother isn't okay. But he still has to watch her mourn his death from the great beyond.
