It’s a disappointing song. It was intentionally stretched out over 6 minutes and made as experimental as possible, but more experimental doesn’t= better. The music video was very good, fantastically shot, but the song? Some decent lyrics, but some very poor ones. Interesting themes throughout as well, but there is just no cohesive elements to the track which lets it all down. It’s extremely messy and not in a way which improves the song. Take Kanye- Runaway for example, that’s a 9 minute track that uses up every second of its runtime. It’s different and unique but everything feels like one and it all needs to be there, this track doesn’t provide that same concept.

In this song, Quadeca died and is watching his mom as a spirit, watching her cope with his death and seeing how she doesn’t light candles anymore for his birthday, tries to tell herself he wasn’t born yesterday and moves on but he knows she’s lying and is still crying/sad inside about his passing/suicide etc in which he regrets on not delaying a specific date (which caused his death) because if he did...he would still be with his loved ones and not in the afterlife alone...also the tapes are connected to the good memories with her and follows him around and finally wraps around him (like how memories stick with you forever in life and death) and now he’s stuck in the afterlife and wants to be with her while a voice in his head is saying “you want her, you need her, she no longer needs you” which causes him to panic and start slamming on the doors or walls trying to get out of the afterlife and have someone hear him but they can’t...he’s forever dead...
In the “living realm” his family is probably getting a cold feeling that someone’s (Quad) watching them and is getting scared/haunted but in reality...it’s Quadeca who’s scared of being stuck in the afterlife with nobody being able to hear him knocking for help...hence the title of the album...
“I didn’t mean to haunt you”......

  • @whosjames
    @whosjames 2 года назад +469

i think this song is from the perspective of a dead person that is in denial about his death. he’s a ghost, but doesn’t understand it all, and is struggling to accept it. the things that he says he regrets are things that he wishes he would’ve done/said before he himself died, not someone else. this also explains the “i have a new birthday to celebrate” line, as the “new birthday” would be the day that he died, or was “born” into some sort of afterlife, hence the title born yesterday.
those are my thoughts, if anyone cares. if you read all of this, you’re pretty cool lol. best quadeca song ever made imo :)

I never know what to expect from this guy but with most of his songs, they just seem to get better the more you hear them which is very unique. Something I truly do admire about Quadeca, and this is repeated quite a bit due to the irony of him doing the styles of rap and imitating other artists in videos, but he truly does seem to be working on building something that is his without necessarily trying to completely stand out and be completely anti pop. His new music seems very distinct which I'm sure he would be proud to hear.
Granted, this song didn't sonically encapsulate me and give me a feeling of euphoria like sisyphus did but this one intrigues me a lot and I'm excited for the album since it seems that with the last album he's proven his technical potential as a producer this one might be something bigger than just music with great sound to incorporate the message (I hope I'm not putting too much expectation on him but he definitely has struck me as someone on the brink of making something really profound and complete but failing to really hit the mark so far. I'm hoping he nails it with this one)

Quadeca's song clearly explores his death and its impact on those around him, as well as his own experience as a ghost. He reflects on both his life and what comes after through the lyrics and instrumentals.
In the opening lines, phrases like “you said I’m in a better place,” “I’ve got a new birthday to celebrate,” and “I blew them out for me, until I forgot how to breathe” convey his perspective on death.
The second verse shifts to the viewpoint of his loved ones, expressing sorrow with lines like “I’ve been in so many tears,” “I’ve been in so many hearts,” and “I’ve been in so many prayers.” It also hints at Quadeca's struggle with their moving on, as he reflects, “I’ve been tryna unsee how you’ve moved on from me,” showcasing his inability to let go of the regret he feels.
This theme of regret is further emphasized in the bridge, where he laments “all those little things I should’ve said out loud,” suggesting a deep yearning for the chance to communicate more with those he cares about before his passing.

The meaning I personally get from this song is this:
His mother used to (verbally) abuse him and in the beginning he laughed it off and was happy she was gone. Then it seems to be she might’ve passed that’s why the Beatles sample says “you want her you need her” kind of like a devil/angel on his shoulders. And then he says he was “circling dates” meaning he was was looking to kill himself and he’d be with his mother again. But idk just what I picked up

@@RedditStorieswithGalxc i agree i think this track is about his mother. there must have been some sort of destroyed relationship between them, yet ben longs to have her back in his life. he doesn't want to take his mother for granted, but he must have always wished that his mother would love him and support him. i think the new birthday line has to do with when (if his mother died) his mother died, a new perspective was born within him that he never saw before. this song sounds like a very vulnerable, deeply emotional piece of work that builds and builds, but then at the end, there is a sense of letting go and moving on. idk maybe im nuts.

Maybe the entire time we perceived his tracks as love songs to a significant other, but maybe they had hidden meanings behind them. Now obviously not all of them refer to his mom in particular, but maybe somethings was happening? I dont know, this theory sounds pretty right about this song though.

i think the song is a flip from a common theme in hip hop of making songs about your own death from the perspective of another, but he flips this to tell the story of him dying and observing from an afterlife, or near death state. This song is specifically talking about his mom who pretends shes okay when shes not when his first birthday dead passes. I think this new album is going to be the storytelling that he always had a lacking presence in his music

People will mark him for trying to be "edgy" or a fake lil peep, but out of all these artists, I feel Quad actually passionately believes his music. It doesn't feel like a show. I think he feels the music, creates the music, then embodies the music with the video production. It is niche music, but to say it isn't unique or beautiful art is disjustice to art imo.

Everybody getting these theories backwards. In this song it isn't about Quad missing his dead mother. It's about DEAD Quad missing his ALIVE mother.
The album is titled "I didn't mean to haunt you" and homie is legit dressed like a damn ghost. WAKE UP PEOPLE. It's a unique take on a song about losing a family member from a reversed perspective. The lines "'ve been in so many tears... I've been in so many prayers... etc." It's literally about him having to witness people mourn his death while he's a ghost. And if that wasn't enough for you, he also says, "I got new birthday to celebrate" This is his birth into the afterlife, also referred to as rebirth by many. Still not enough for you? He deadass says, "I've been trying unsee how you moved on from me." He's watching his mother move on from mourning his death.
The main chorus of "I wasn't born yesterday, I think you're goddamn lying" is about him watching his mother cope with his death and pretend she is okay. But Quadeca isn't stupid, he knows h mother is hurting and he knows that she is lying to herself and everyone else. This isn't me grasping at straws either he legit says, "You said it happened for a reason, I swear to God, I think you're goddamn lying". He knows that his mother isn't okay. But he still has to watch her mourn his death from the great beyond.

still trying to figure out exactly what this song specifically is about but since he has said before that this album is going to be related to death and themes of that nature the strongest conclusion i have come to is that this song is about the passing of someones parents due to the references to birth, his mother being slowly phased out of the birthday footage, and the constant repetition of and themes of "needing you" and no longer being needed by them. then again it could just be about a breakup or death in general, but lines like "the umbilical cord is still wrapped around me" point in a different direction (to me at least.) Either way, great song, great progression from his last work, and I'm excited to see whats to come.
