6/11/21: Alienware has responded! Here's some extra info on the X15/X17.
    1) There is no QHD option on the X17 (typo on spec sheet). The resolution listed is wrong. It says UHD next to it, which stands for 4K, which is correct. No QHD on 17.3". Sorry for any confusion!
    2) Alienware confirms X15 has soldered ram, while the X17 has upgradeable RAM slots.
    3) The configs without Advanced Optimus come with regular Optimus, which means good battery life--but this will likely caused reduced performance when playing CPU bound games, especially at 1080P and on low settings--i.e. competitive shooters where you want to optimize frame rate. I think its likely not a huge issue at 4K (or downsampled to QHD) resolutions. But for those of you that want to maximize performance at 1080P for e-sports, get the Adv. Optimus version.
Quote from Alienware "iGPU control internal panel through eDP mux
dGPU control HDMP/DP/Type-C port A by HW design
iGPU control Type-C port B by HW design"
^I like this above, since it gives the user an option for good battery life while presenting.
    4) They have not been specific about CPU TDP, just saying the standard 45W from intel, but I am expecting higher TDP, closer to 80W+ if history repeats itself.
    5) They have not clarified if they will allow undervolting, but it sounds like they will on the "K" models, including overclocking as expected.
That's all the info I have so far worth sharing.

I agree with you on almost every point. For me this laptop have 2 downsides: its absence of num pad and no availability of high refresh rate QHD. If you add num pad to this laptop and QHD 240hz screen it would be absolute best for me. It is very expensive and customer wants it to fulfill all his needs. I guess they removed num pad because of the whole cooling system (air intake vents on top) but maybe in future models they will be able to shift them further to the sides and squeeze num pad there.

Great video. I almost ordered the same model as you but I am waiting for June 15th after speaking with dell/alienware for the other customizations. I am hoping for an x17 with optional dark side of the moon color, no cherry mix as I find it to loud for on the go, and also a qhd display. 4k is nice but no need on 17inch screen. I am also debating the 11980hk or 11800h as the performance difference is minimal for the cost. What are your thoughts. Also I think the higher price isn't so bad when comparing the x17 to the 2021 razerblade pro 17 also with a quad fan design and the zephyrus duo. From what I have seen this new quad fan design dramatically decreases thermals which for me is better than a few more fps at high ass temps. The new cooling enhancements and thermal performance alone is enough for me. I had an m15r3 with i9 and 2080 super and it just got way to hot all the time, the m17r3 performed much better because of the extra head room inside. I will not get another 15inch gaming laptop.

    • @AphexSchwinn
      @AphexSchwinn 3 года назад +1

My guess is that they pulled the numpad for two reasons. 1. They may have needed the room for more fan intake for those 4 fans. 2. It seems like the design this time around is trying to allow them to share components between the 15 and 17 - as well as keep the interior black on ALL models, even if they offer a black exterior in the future.

Anyone who recommends X15 is not the sharpest tool in the shed or is in on it with Dell. RTX 3080 and 3070 with 90watt base TDP is ridiculously low. It is lower than any other laptop on the market. Yet this laptop is $3.5K. You are way better off getting M15R4 or M15R5 (R5 with QHD panel for video and photo editing - that 99% DCI P3 is a must). The X17 is very nice , but also very expensive. You can get M17R4 at Best Buy with 3070 (140Watt) and 10th Gen Intel for $2250. My personal take is no laptop should be more expensive than 3K, unless you work on Wall St and I don't. If you are spending over 3K on a computer , it might as well be an RTX 3090 desktop monster PC (or 3080 TI).

Though 300 nit peak brightness on the FHD is a little sad. 400 or 450 would be nice. I'm mostly curious about about performance versus something like my Area 51m. Still probably gonna hold out on a new laptop though until Nvidia releases their next gen RTX cards. By then maybe Intel will catch up some more to AMD and give me a variety of options. Hello again, I spoke with you some time ago when I was making a decision between the AMD vs. Intel gaming laptops. I went with the Alienware M17 R4 and have been happy. I have an oppertunity to turn this one in and go for the X17 and I want to know your thoughts. I don't expect life changing gameplay improvements although I'm sure going from a 10th gen. i7 to a 11th gen. i9 will be somewhat significant (same RTX 3080 in both) . I exclusively play COD Warzone and it seems pretty CPU intensive so that'll be nice. RAM speed upgrade will be nice but probably not a game changer. I do however expect a major improvement in the thermals and that's a big deal when taking the longevity of the machine into account. I am wondering if you have any word on when the higher refresh rate models will be available? COD although benefiting aesthetically from a 4k display would not be feasible from a frame-rate/gameplay perspective with 120hz. I'd appreciate any feedback you have with respect to the upgrade on machines and what to expect. Thanks again for all that you do, your channel is a mainstay for many of us and I really look forward to your perspective.

The x17 is probably 9 lb including the massive brick. Try lugging that around and traveling with it. Ultimately, it's all a losing game as they will depreciate like crazy once next year's model comes out. It's a conspiracy! X15 doesn't look that good,
looks like it's super expensive just because of being thin (but still heavy). I would go for Asus Strix Scar, Asus Zephyrus, or Lenovo Legion 5 Pro instead.
On the other hand, X17 looks great!
but the current top-end fully-loaded price is too much for my wallet and I am not that hardcore/serious gamer. So, I will wait for lower models.
    Looking forward to:
    - i7-11800H
    - RTX 3070
    - 2 x 16 GB, 3200 MHz (I don't think 3467 MHz will be much different)
    - 1TB NVMe - PCIe3, but 2TB is PCIe4 (If the price is not much different, I will get 2TB)
    - 4K UHD
I think FHD is old for 17.3" now and I don't need high refresh rate either. Personally, I prefer QHD as you said but it's not available. So, I will just go with the best screen because it's important and the thing we have to see/watch every day. I always spend some money on the screen and 100% Adobe RGB is amazing.
I hope this configuration (or something close) is available and brings the price down to under 3k. I don't want to step down further to RTX3060 or FHD screen for a laptop of this caliber.
Time to save money for months to come~ I usually buy a good laptop and use it for long. My current laptop is XPS15 9550 (i7-6700HQ + 960GT), I use it for years and get the most out of it. I think it's about time to get the new one :)

The BestBuy config pre-order is at 2.5k

It's pretty on point, considering the base model starts at $2,100 (which is probably RTX3060 with the lowest FHD screen). Man, I can't wait for 15th June to see how much the 4K UHD screen will cost. The 16 GB RAM is a bit too low, but I can upgrade them later.

      UPDATE:
I placed my order today, here we go!
      - i7-11800H
      - RTX 3080 16GB GDDR6
      - 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
      - 512GB PCIe NVMe
      - 4K UHD 120Hz
      - CherryMX mechanical KB
      - Windows 10 Pro
Ended up getting RTX 3080 because I think 16GB GDDR6 makes more sense for the 4K UHD display. When we buy a laptop this expensive (~$3,000), the $300 is not that different anymore. Also, a good GPU is very rare and valuable these days, I go for it while I have a chance. We can use it for mining a bit and RTX3080 will pay its cost.
      On the other hand,
I did not go for i9-11980HK because it has the same Core/Thread. It's just a faster clock speed with higher power consumption; the difference will be minimal. The same for XMP RAM, since I also don't play e-sport titles.
The laptop is expected to arrive late next month. Man, I cannot wait for it.

So, for the x15 model, does it mean a RTX 3080 will give the same quality of graphics as the RTX 3070?
