The actor, who played Grandad Trotter, Lennard Pearce, had his funeral just before Strained Relations was filmed. Del Boy, and Rodney were young, when they lost their mum, and their dad walked out on them. Grandad Trotter brought them up, and was like a father figure, in a way. He was loyal. He was there, for the good times, and the bad times.
Every single thing was done perfect in this, the writing, the acting (Lyndhurst even got the staying quiet right), it's just one of many beautiful scenes in the show.
My Grandma died last week and I’ve managed to hold it together until this clip was randomly recommended. Me and my Grandma loved Only fools and this has me laughing and in tears at the same time. Love you Grandma and love this show ❤️
You have my total sympathy. I too have lost grandparents and parents. But this is the point i was striving to make in my comment: we turn to this sort of thing to CHEER US UP, not reduce us to tears. This is comedy, not drama. If it makes people cry, then it has FAILED. Best Wishes to you.

Not completely true. Ray Galton and Alan Simpson did it first in TV comedy. In Steptoe and Son there were moments of great sadness/pathos. In episodes such as "Home's fit for Heroes" and "Two's Company" for example. John Sullivan acknowledged them as great influences.
This has to been the hardest scene for these two actors to have ever done. First time ever in tv where it was a funeral for a character because the actor died. Going by everything I’ve read and watched they was all close friends outside of work. sir David is obviously amazing in this scene but Nicolas is amazing without even saying a word while Del Boy is lashing out we can feel both of there pain and anger.
Loss is always hard and painful. I know cos I've been through it and I've a lot of heartbreak. My pet cat died. Two dogs who I befriended died. Both my grandmothers died. My grandfather died. My mother's mother passing away last year sent me into depression. A depression I endured for 4 months. I understand Sir David's pain and that of his character.
That was the beauty of OFAH. They could have replaced granddad with another actor like other shows have done. But instead they mixed the laughter with pathos and how the death of a loved one effects us. Simply brilliant

A masterclass in acting right there, and I know it sounds odd, but the most powerful bit for me is when he asks Rodney in a rhetorical way"and do you know why". Its like Delboy transitions from being the confident Delboy that we all know to being just a normal person with real feelings. Its incredible to watch, and very powerful
Yup, any British bloke, from England, Scotland, Wales N.ireland and Republic of Ireland, anywhere really, Have been brought up to stop mourning and get on with it, or keep going , but add a bit of up the ante, to try and overcome the morbidity of a loved one lost. Its fact, I've done it with family, friends and pets, it's all were used to is to keep going, but I've realised as well, when you've got that moment of privacy for a good while, nobody's around,is to just let it out. That's how I'm used to it still to this day.
It was lovely the way John Sullivan paid tribute to the actors who passed away while the show was still running as we see here with Grandad, also he made Uncle Alberts funeral funny so that Buster would be proud. R.I.P. Lennard.

This scene still chokes me up all these years later. It is so brilliant and raw and you can actually feel David Jason’s sadness as he was actually hurting from Lennard Pierce’s real life death
I love how this reveals another side to Del Boy-he’s using his toughness to hide his grief. I think Only Fools and Horses could be described as being more of a dramedy (comedy-drama) than a sitcom.
This reminds me of the time after my Grandad died when i was 16. My friend more or less accused me of getting over the death of my Grandad so quick simply because i was happy after having a good time when we went shopping. We got into an argument after that.I told that because i was happy doesn't mean i'm over it and 16 yrs later i'm not. I wasn't trying to be hard i was simply trying to carry on after a terrible loss and my he wouldn't have wanted me to be unhappy. I only choose to remember the good times we had not the bad times because it hurts.
It really annoys me when people demand you react a certain way to things. Like Chloe Ayling people called her a liar just because she didn't "act like a kidnapping victim".

I can agree with that. My grandad died 15 years ago. I still haven't got over it. All the occasions him and my nanna should be at, the times I think of him. I'll never get over it.
I love this scene.. del boy reminds me soo much of my dad. I wear my heart on my sleeve and can show emotion no problem but he's made of the old stuff.. when we lost our nan..his mum.. we was all a wreck but he didn't even shed a tear..he just walked to a corner.. took a few breaths then came back and started hugging everyone else and comforting family even though it was his mum. I never got it cos I was young but now in my 30s I completely understand and I wish I was half the man he is. Strong... determined... puts everyone else above himself and carries himself with pride and self respect that no one can shake. Love that man with every bone in my body and hope my boys look up to him just as much as I do and always will... love to dads everywhere with dels morals
I know it's months But how you describe your Dad, that was ours. Never seen him cry. Even losing all his brothers. Me Mum always said probably due to losing his Mum at a early age. Think I follow suit cause when we lost both parents day after each other, never shed a tear.
When del boy touches the chair is what I did when my dad passed away I get everything del boy said because I am the same way I am always the tough guy not to let things get me down always have a smile on my face but losing a love one so close to you is the hard thing to go through its is heart breaking and when you don't know how to express your emotions after so long of smiling its next to impossible to grieve. So David Jason acting in this seen is beyond amazing.
After twenty years of caring and devoting my life to mum, she was put into palliative care. At hospital, I couldn’t see mum the way I would have liked due to the pandemic. And when I did eventually see her, I felt like crying my eyes out. However, I never cried in front of mum because that would have caused her upset and I loved her too much for that. Life can be so tough sometimes.
I had to watch this clip. Unfortunately I lost my gran. I needed to get rid of my pain. Such brilliant acting. The pain is so real. I love you gran xxx
My father died yesterday I thought of this scene for some reason. And the part where Albert tells Rodney about pressure . I don't know how to feel just like Del . It's kind of comforting me.

Shout out to all the other dads and men who have the same issues. Showing weakness as a man is a bad thing. I don’t like this, but it’s true. Nobody wants a weak man and nobody knows what to do with them. Even now, my wife will NEVER see that. Why? I had a breakdown when I was younger when I realised the truth: They say men should show their feelings but nobody has any time for it, people drift away and eventually people lose their patience. I had a severe trauma and I shared my childhood abuse with a few people. You’d think they would rally round but they don’t. They don’t want to know you. Last time I ever do that.
This, the lift scene after Cassandra's miscarriage and in season 1 in the bomb shelter where Grandad talks about the WW1 veterans are the most powerful scenes in the show
This makes me think of both times I've suffered loss! My Dad died in July 2016 on account of lung cancer and he felt like a partner to me! The following year, my Mum met someone else, January last year, they got engaged, but July last year, that man too was taken from us! What makes that loss tougher to handle was that he and I were still getting to know each other and it turned out that we had a lot in common as well!
I love this show so much, I'm 37 and am able to watch this with my 90yr old grandpa and my 11yr old son with us all laughing at it as it is timeless and appeals to all generations. The show had it's highs and lows, showed what true family and friendship was and remains the best show to ever be put on TV.
This hits hard for me because A) It’s true, families can be a burden to you. B) Del reminds me of my mum. And C) My great grandmother passed away early on today. 😢

I don't know any other comedy that had me crying with laughter one minute then had me nursing a lump in my throat the next. Only fools and horses is the greatest comedy series ever. And, there's been some barn storming classics but this is the creme de la creme!
My terminally ill father died in my arms at 2am today (25-12-24), he got me into OFAH and we were 2 of the biggest OFAH fans, I'm heartbroken and this scene just hits...
One of my fave scenes, very powerful acting and brave writing by John Sullivan as in those days men talking about their feeling was a taboo subject. David Jason at the peak of his powers here.
This is why OFAH is the best British comedy of all time to me, only John Sullivan could make you cry with laughter one minute and cry with sadness the next. As someone who has lost a grandad recently, this made me go. One of my favourite scenes.
Fantastic acting and writing. John Sullivan was a master writer, up there with the likes of Ronnie Barker. This is writing calibar we will never see again. I lost my dad 14 years ago when i was 16 to cancer, lost my nan to cancer who died on christmas eve. The best thing about only fools was it taught you to love and cherish your family and remember all the good times you had
Brilliant scene, and one of the best of the entire show. It’s essentially at the very core of what made OFAH the very best. Funny, tragic, painful, angry, what might have been for Del. David Jason knocks it out of the park here. The man who’s had to bottle everything for so long just to keep things going for everyone.
Agree. It's arguably the moment when OFAH moves from being just a really funny sitcom (which is great thing to be anyway) and starts to think 'we could go further with these characters'. A show that can make you cry as easily as it can make you laugh.
I usually think that this is not only what Del is going through, but also what Albert goes through in this episode. He had been held back, dragged down, and then eventually had his heart broken by them two who abandoned him with Rodney and Del. This will always be such an emotional episode nevertheless, whether it being from Del's breakdown, Albert's backstory, or the loss of such a lovely actor and character.
Notice also Albert empathises with Del earlier on. He sees him laughing and joking for everyone at the wake, and assures Rodney he's just trying to deal with the loss how he can. ("Laughter is just his safety valve.")

No disrespect to Buster Merryfield, I liked Uncle Albert a lot and the show stayed great for years, but the show never felt the same after Lennard Pearce died. He just fit the dynamic perfectly and played the role so beautifully.
True though, they do hold you back, they do drag you down, and they do break your heart. The sad truth is most families are at least somewhat dysfunctional.

Jim Broadbent, AKA, Roy Slater was going to be Del Boy, and he was busy doing something else. I am glad that, David Jason, now Sir David Jason got the part of Del Boy. He is a very funny actor.
David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst were affected really badly. So even though they are acting here it's genuine grief they are feeling from attending Lennard Pierce's funeral in real life.
It's one of the most powerful scenes ever put on TV. When a close relative dies, you're in shock and it can last a few days, a few weeks or even a few months. Only then, after that time, it hits you. Everything Del says or should I say David Jason the actor playing Del, is spot on. Rodney is too young to get it but if he was twice the age, he would.
I can relate so much to Del Boy in this scene. I lost myGrandad last Christmas and I still haven’t properly grieved because like Del I don’t know how to. I’ve suffered with depression for a lot of my life and when I was 17 and 24 (I’m 32 now) I went through some particularly bad times with everything that was going on and on those occasions I was told constantly to “man up” and to “get a grip” by people. Because of that I now don’t know how to grieve and properly show emotion anymore and because of that the same people who told me to man up now call me emotionless and say that I don’t care. Sometimes you just can’t win. Superb writing by John Sullivan and superb acting by David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
I lost my nan it will be 6 years this christmas eve and i have yet to grieve over it. It took me a good few years to grieve over my dad's death as i was only 16 when he died. Your a year older than me
I can relate to this well in life after a period of time are nature and personality gets set and we don't know how to be anything else. I think all of our human nature gets set by what happens to each of us on our lifes journey what happens to us in our early life all the way to the present day. Such good writing here john Sullivan had great emotional intelligence to understand this.
My father was the same. He took care of his mother and siblings after the war. Later solved their problems, worked all his life to raise his own family. When we were all grown and left home i told him’now you and mum should go and enjoy yourselves. He said’i dont know how’ he sacrificed yeats of his life fr us all. I feel so sad.
Del was born and raised in post-war poverty, lost his Mum at 16 and his Dad walked out on him at the same age, leaving him to be the bread winner for the family. He may have been dealt a bad hand but boy is the character of Del Boy inspiring when you really think about his perseverance.

I wear my heart on my sleeve and can show emotion no problem but he's made of the old stuff.. when we lost our nan..his mum.. we was all a wreck but he didn't even shed a tear..he just walked to a corner.. took a few breaths then came back and started hugging everyone else and comforting family even though it was his mum. I never got it cos I was young but now in my 30s I completely understand and I wish I was half the man he is. Strong... determined... puts everyone else above himself and carries himself with pride and self respect that no one can shake. Love that man with every bone in my body and hope my boys look up to him just as much as I do and always will... love to dads everywhere with dels morals

But how you describe your Dad, that was ours. Never seen him cry. Even losing all his brothers. Me Mum always said probably due to losing his Mum at a early age. Think I follow suit cause when we lost both parents day after each other, never shed a tear.

When del boy touches the chair is what I did when my dad passed away I get everything del boy said because I am the same way I am always the tough guy not to let things get me down always have a smile on my face but losing a love one so close to you is the hard thing to go through its is heart breaking and when you don't know how to express your emotions after so long of smiling its next to impossible to grieve. So David Jason acting in this seen is beyond amazing.
After twenty years of caring and devoting my life to mum, she was put into palliative care. At hospital, I couldn’t see mum the way I would have liked due to the pandemic. And when I did eventually see her, I felt like crying my eyes out. However, I never cried in front of mum because that would have caused her upset and I loved her too much for that. Life can be so tough sometimes.
David Jason is just an awesome actor. This scene still makes me well up! 😥

Hi Andy, my father just passed two days ago and remember this scene from years ago, it stayed with me. Without thinking about it, found myself stroking his armchair yesterday like Del did.

Showing weakness as a man is a bad thing. I don’t like this, but it’s true. Nobody wants a weak man and nobody knows what to do with them. Even now, my wife will NEVER see that. Why? I had a breakdown when I was younger when I realised the truth: They say men should show their feelings but nobody has any time for it, people drift away and eventually people lose their patience.
I had a severe trauma and I shared my childhood abuse with a few people. You’d think they would rally round but they don’t. They don’t want to know you. Last time I ever do that.

This makes me think of both times I've suffered loss! My Dad died in July 2016 on account of lung cancer and he felt like a partner to me! The following year, my Mum met someone else, January last year, they got engaged, but July last year, that man too was taken from us! What makes that loss tougher to handle was that he and I were still getting to know each other and it turned out that we had a lot in common as well!
I love this show so much, I'm 37 and am able to watch this with my 90yr old grandpa and my 11yr old son with us all laughing at it as it is timeless and appeals to all generations.
The show had it's highs and lows, showed what true family and friendship was and remains the best show to ever be put on TV.

This scenes resonates with me so much. The feeling of whether you are grieving the 'correct' way and how loss can impact you beyond the moment they go. Losing my Grandad last year the last line really gets me
David Jason cemented himself as the perfect Del Boy in this scene. It's just impossible to imagine the show without him.

Only fools and horses is the greatest comedy series ever. And, there's been some barn storming classics but this is the creme de la creme!
My terminally ill father died in my arms at 2am today (25-12-24), he got me into OFAH and we were 2 of the biggest OFAH fans, I'm heartbroken and this scene just hits...
One of my fave scenes, very powerful acting and brave writing by John Sullivan as in those days men talking about their feeling was a taboo subject. David Jason at the peak of his powers here.
Any show can be funny but it takes genius to tow the line and be sad at times. Brilliant show
This is why OFAH is the best British comedy of all time to me, only John Sullivan could make you cry with laughter one minute and cry with sadness the next. As someone who has lost a grandad recently, this made me go. One of my favourite scenes.

Fantastic acting and writing. John Sullivan was a master writer, up there with the likes of Ronnie Barker. This is writing calibar we will never see again. I lost my dad 14 years ago when i was 16 to cancer, lost my nan to cancer who died on christmas eve. The best thing about only fools was it taught you to love and cherish your family and remember all the good times you had

Brilliant scene, and one of the best of the entire show. It’s essentially at the very core of what made OFAH the very best. Funny, tragic, painful, angry, what might have been for Del. David Jason knocks it out of the park here. The man who’s had to bottle everything for so long just to keep things going for everyone.
Agree. It's arguably the moment when OFAH moves from being just a really funny sitcom (which is great thing to be anyway) and starts to think 'we could go further with these characters'. A show that can make you cry as easily as it can make you laugh.

I usually think that this is not only what Del is going through, but also what Albert goes through in this episode. He had been held back, dragged down, and then eventually had his heart broken by them two who abandoned him with Rodney and Del. This will always be such an emotional episode nevertheless, whether it being from Del's breakdown, Albert's backstory, or the loss of such a lovely actor and character.
Notice also Albert empathises with Del earlier on. He sees him laughing and joking for everyone at the wake, and assures Rodney he's just trying to deal with the loss how he can. ("Laughter is just his safety valve.")

No disrespect to Buster Merryfield, I liked Uncle Albert a lot and the show stayed great for years, but the show never felt the same after Lennard Pearce died. He just fit the dynamic perfectly and played the role so beautifully.
Lennard was legendary don’t get me wrong but the show only got better in the seasons after Grandad
True though, they do hold you back, they do drag you down, and they do break your heart. The sad truth is most families are at least somewhat dysfunctional.
This is the amazing thing about the show. Most comedies just seem to be about the laughs but only fools and horses could make you laugh and then suddenly cry. Great writting and actors. Funny to think they tried to give david jason the grandad role at first

Jim Broadbent, AKA, Roy Slater was going to be Del Boy, and he was busy doing something else. I am glad that, David Jason, now Sir David Jason got the part of Del Boy. He is a very funny actor.
David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst were affected really badly. So even though they are acting here it's genuine grief they are feeling from attending Lennard Pierce's funeral in real life.

It's one of the most powerful scenes ever put on TV. When a close relative dies, you're in shock and it can last a few days, a few weeks or even a few months. Only then, after that time, it hits you. Everything Del says or should I say David Jason the actor playing Del, is spot on. Rodney is too young to get it but if he was twice the age, he would.
Brilliant scene, and fantastic acting from David Jason. When Del says "I don't even know how to...", I think he wanted to say "cry".

I can relate so much to Del Boy in this scene. I lost myGrandad last Christmas and I still haven’t properly grieved because like Del I don’t know how to.
I’ve suffered with depression for a lot of my life and when I was 17 and 24 (I’m 32 now) I went through some particularly bad times with everything that was going on and on those occasions I was told constantly to “man up” and to “get a grip” by people. Because of that I now don’t know how to grieve and properly show emotion anymore and because of that the same people who told me to man up now call me emotionless and say that I don’t care. Sometimes you just can’t win.

I lost my nan it will be 6 years this christmas eve and i have yet to grieve over it. It took me a good few years to grieve over my dad's death as i was only 16 when he died. Your a year older than me

I can relate to this well in life after a period of time are nature and personality gets set and we don't know how to be anything else. I think all of our human nature gets set by what happens to each of us on our lifes journey what happens to us in our early life all the way to the present day. Such good writing here john Sullivan had great emotional intelligence to understand this.

My father was the same. He took care of his mother and siblings after the war. Later solved their problems, worked all his life to raise his own family. When we were all grown and left home i told him’now you and mum should go and enjoy yourselves. He said’i dont know how’ he sacrificed yeats of his life fr us all. I feel so sad.

Del was born and raised in post-war poverty, lost his Mum at 16 and his Dad walked out on him at the same age, leaving him to be the bread winner for the family.
He may have been dealt a bad hand but boy is the character of Del Boy inspiring when you really think about his perseverance.
John Sullivan was just the best comedy/ Drama writer of all time nothing will ever come close to Only Fools & Horses from the writing to the actors everything was just perfect
