Imagine being 15/16 and being able to write a song like this. And the lyricism only grew onwards.
I admire your willingness to experiment with music outside of your usual comfort zone. There's a whole universe of quality music laying around waiting to be picked up and played by curious music lovers like yourself. We all like the comfort of our preferred music lanes, but venturing off them and sometimes wandering down country lanes for awhile, becomes a surprisingly enjoyable experience. I hope this album, Taylor Swift, will be a pleasant drive for you. I'll come along for the trip if you don't mind.
one of the things that distinguish this song from the other 'love songs' you mention is the vivid storytelling/imagery in her songs.

This song came out when I was 16, man this album was my jam (and I also listen to her new music, Midnights is a pop juggernaut). I remember so many of my friends not understanding how I could listen to Taylor Swift while at the same time I loved Nirvana and Alice in Chains for example.
The truth is that you can find good music that resonates with you no matter the genre.
PS: My favorite song from her debut album is I'm Only Me When I'm With You. But all time it's hard to choose one.

I love this song. I had just turned 15 when it was released and I used to listen to country music growing up so I heard this on the radio just as it entered the top 40 at country radio and completely fell in love with it. And I've been a fan of Taylor's ever since. I've been able to grow up with her and she's been the soundtrack to my life in a lot of ways. But since this is the very first song from her I ever heard and loved, it does hold a special place in my heart. It's just so sweet and romantic but sad. It tells a simple but very compelling story. And it has such a beautiful melody. It's crazy to me that she wrote a song this good while sitting in math class her freshman year of high school.
In her first few albums the male backup voice is usually Nathan Chapman who produced the albums
