    Thank you Sarah for this and all of your videos. Always great. Also nice that you are using Aida as a lot of stichers seem to be a bit snobbish when it comes to this fabric as if the project will be that less pretty. Thank goodness that Aida does exist if not a lot of people would not stitch or have to give up stitching due to the smaller count size of other fabrics!!

      Very true! I like the look of the fine fabric behind the stitching, but this project is no less beautiful because it's stitched on Aida. I've been very happy with how this is turning out. :) I have several kits I'm planning to start next year, and they'll all be 14ct Aida also. I'm not a fabric snob and I'll use what I have. :)

    Your stitching is beautiful. I too only stitch for fun. Started in 1979 after my daughter was born and I became a “stay at home mom”. I do my fractional the same way. Back in 1979 there was nobody to show you so I had to teach myself. I’m currently on a Wildlife Afghan. I’ve done many other projects while doing this Afghan. Almost done.
    Love your videos and keep up the good work.

    I am so happy to see you cross stitch on Aida. Some stitchers never talk about stitching on Aida and I don't understand why. A lot of people have a hard time seeing the tiny squares on Evenweave and Ligana, etc., even if they look through a magnifying glass of some kind. I can only stitch on Aida and I enjoy it very much. I have been stitching in a hoop and frames for a while, but when I came across your video a few days ago of stitching in hand I had to try it! I have to tell you that I just love it Sarah! It is so much easier to do then in a hoop...thank you so much for sharing that with eveyone :) I love to watch you stitch...you are an amazing cross stitcher and you make everything look so easy :) This video is just so informative and you are doing a beautiful job! I'm so glad that I came across your videos...I am learning so much from you! Happy stitching! :)

      Thank you so much for your encouraging comments! :) I have noticed that the online stitching community has lots of people who hate Aida and backstitching and fractionals and various things - as if full crosses on linen is the only way to cross stitch. I really enjoy patterns with fine details, but it seems to not be the trend right now. I like to use what I have, so if I have a piece of Aida that matches a project, that's what I'm going to use! I like all the different kinds of fabric, as long as my eyes allow me to use them. :)

      You are so sweet and kind Sarah...thank you so much for your kind comment back to me. I wish that I could cross stitch on all the different kinds of fabrics, but my eyes have a hard time seeing the tiny squares, so I stitch on Aida. You stitch so beautifully on all kinds of fabrics...I love all of your videos! Just want to let you know how much I love to stitch in hand now! I'm not sure why I never thought of that, but thanks to your video on RUclips I tried it and love it! I don't want to stitch any other way now! Thanks so much for this video of you stitching on Aida...your work is just beautiful! Oh I have to tell you one more thing...because of your video on RUclips I tried 5D Diamond Painting and I love it! Thank you so much! Happy Stitching :)

    Wow! Your beading! I have not Stitched in 30 years! I have always used the DMC Floss I am stitching with unless, the bead is a very different color than the Stitching Floss. My beads remain in original container. Mainly Mill Hill beads and Delicas. Had no idea why you would want to make something fun complicated. Keep stitching. Yes, I have been going backwards on your Flosstube! It is a very good Flosstube, very wise words.

    I learned so much watching you bead. Doing my first Nora Corbett on 16 ct. I'm using the half stitch method to attach the beads. Feels like I have to manipulate them somewhat to get them to lay correctly. I did learn on another project that if the fabric called for is 32 that you need to use 16 as a substitute because beading is too crowded using 18 ct. Thank you for sticking up for being ok to use aida. I passed up many beautiful patterns because I was uncomfortable with linen.

I started cross stitching in high school in a family and consumer science class and I fell in love with it, but I started doing it as a hobby about 2 years ago in college. Thank you! My grandma taught me how to cross stitch when I was in the 2nd grade. I stitched a stamped cross stitch handkerchief. Once I reached junior high and high school, I embraced crafting more completely, learning how to sew and jumping into all sorts of counted cross stitch projects. My mom also knows how to stitch, although prefers to knit, so I had many role models in my life. :)

    I've beaded a lot of projects, including mirabilias just like you have. Not only is it cost effective it also doesn't require a lot of effort to just pop open the beads and start attaching them. I would match the dmc thread to the fabric though so I wouldn't even need to change dmc colours for each bead colour :D

    wow, I have been stitching for 30 years as well and I have never learned the term fractionals. I have done them on and off. I am looking at a stitchery that I would love to do "the designer" John Clayton love his designs. and he has the stitch squashed fractional. and that is a cool stitch I am learning as well. I love 14 aida count I will only do it that size because I love just kindof zoning out. when I stitch and it is good when you say that we should do what is fun for us. the beads are super cool I need to add some to some of my designs.thanks very much for your instruction. - spice

    This video from 5 years ago popped up and it couldn’t be at a better time. Very well done, Sarah, I really enjoyed your instructions. When I first learned cross stitch 40 years ago I learned about partial stitches on Aida because that’s all we stitched on. Nice to see that it’s still possible now too. The beading is gorgeous. Question, I noticed you carried your string across the top of some finished stitches. Do they become “buried”? Thank you for a great tutorial.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  Год назад +1

      I'm glad this video was helpful to you! What part of the video showed the carrying of the string? I typically like to run my carried thread underneath the back of finished stitches as much as possible so that the thread doesn't pull too tight.

    • @sandykalmeyer9523
      @sandykalmeyer9523 Год назад

      @@StitchinMommy when you were attaching the beads you didn’t go under the stitches on the back but over the top to a couple rows down. Maybe I saw that wrong?

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  Год назад +1

      I think if it's not very far to carry, I will sometimes just carry over the back of the finished stitches instead of running it underneath. Just keeping my tension good is the important thing. :)

  • @marijansenvanvuuren7663

    You mention that you would stitch more of a stitch on 14 ct....if I may ask, why not stitch with more strands for instance 3 or 4 strands in stead of 2? The project I have is also on 14 ct, and I was wondering if I shouldn't use more strands.....

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  4 года назад +2

      Mari Jansen Van Vuuren Good question! I don’t want to have to come back through with a new length of thread on my needle with more strands, just to do the fractional stitches. That being said, I know some patterns and stitchers like to use 3 strands on 14ct, so if you were stitching the whole piece with more strands, the coverage on those fractional stitches would probably be better. I think 2 strands is a little easier to work with than 3, but the coverage with darker colors would probably be better with 3 strands.

    I really like your snow queen I just got the pattern and going to stitch it in the new year it can be one of my new starts .love the way you bead,I am new to beading so this will be a challenge how did you anchor your beads when they stand alone did you carry the thread to each bead or start new thread for individual beads

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  5 лет назад +1

      Sharon Abbott Hi! I’m glad you’ll be stitching her, too! She’s really pretty to work on. I like to carry my thread on the back for the stand-alone beads. I would be too afraid that they would come off if I tried to anchor each one. If your fabric is somewhat see through, and you’re planning to carry, try using invisible thread or a thread color that matches the fabric. I attached the beads around the torch in Lady of the Flag with a fabric-matching color of thread because a bead-matching color showed through when I carried it from bead to bead. However, it kind of makes the beads change color a little bit to be less bright yellow, so I might go back and redo them with some invisible thread. We’ll see how much it bugs me the next time I get that project out. 😂 So, it kind of depends on your beads and fabric, what route you choose for thread, but carrying on those kind is the safest route. 👍🏻

    I enjoy your videos a lot. You are well organized. I have never beaded but you have shown me that it is not so hard! I do have a couple patterns and kits which includes beads and now I feel more comfortable working on them. I also recall on another video you keep and work on your full coverage pieces from a 3 ring binder. Am i correct in thinking this? Can you explain your system a little? So far my full coverage pieces have been kits and I made the mistake of not making copies. Any assistance you can give would be appreciated. Thanks SHERRY

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  6 лет назад +1

      I'm glad to give you some confidence in trying beads now! :)
      Most of my full-coverage designs have been purchased as PDFs online. So, I will print out the patterns on regular computer paper and keep them in binders. I often have 2-3 different patterns in the same binder, with post-it notes sticking out in between each pattern like a divider. I also put a thin strip of post-it note on the first page of each row of pages, so that if I need to work down the pattern to the pages below, I can easily find where the next row starts. Not super classy, but it works! :) I also have started to rip out the finished pages and throw them away! It's kind of freeing to be completely done with a page, and I always have it saved on my computer if I really need to reference it for some reason.
      I have hardly ever made working copies of my physical patterns. I made a copy of this Snow Queen pattern because she was spread over two magazine pages and it was hard to line up the stitches from one page to the next - especially in the folds of her skirt. My recent Mirabilia pattern got to be pretty ratty by the end, along the folds, but it worked! I also only highlight full coverage patterns, so I don't usually make any marks on my regular patterns.

    Thank you for the tutorials, they are so useful and realistic, not only we can see beautiful pieces. May I ask something? How long your threads when you are beading? And when you do cross stitch or back stitch?

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  6 лет назад +1

      You're welcome! I know there are some people who are very concerned with exact technique and proper everything, but a lot of us just want to have fun and enjoy a hobby that is relaxing, while still producing beautiful results. :)
      I used to just eye-ball the length of thread that I cut off of my bobbins, but lately I've been measuring out 48" lengths. I double each strand over with the loop method if my project needs two strands, or separate out one strand and cut it in half if I need only 1 strand for my project. So, I'm usually working with a 24" length of thread. However, when I was beading down the side of this lady with all the scattered beads that were very far apart, I decided to leave the string at it's full length so that I wouldn't need to tie anything off in the middle, since there aren't any stitches there to tuck the threads under.

    • @kintotodiary
      @kintotodiary 6 лет назад

      Thank you for the advice, now I know my threads were too short, and that’s why I feel pain. I’ll try that length.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  4 года назад

      Beverley Gardam I do usually bead with just a half cross stitch. It lays the beads on an angle in the square, which can help them fit nicer than if they are positioned vertically. Sometimes the beads are just a bit bigger than the square on fabric, and laying diagonally gives them the necessary added room. Sometimes smaller, petite beads that don’t have a size issue will be instructed in the pattern to attach with a full cross. I will go ahead and bead those as called for. I think the border beads on my dragon project are attached with a full cross. I think those will look good that way - very symmetrical - which will compliment the structured border. When beading fancy ladies, I feel like it’s okay for the beads to not be so rigid. 😊💖

    What thin needle do u use? Allison

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  2 года назад

      I like to use a short beading needle when beading - it has a very thin eye that can go through beads, but isn't long and floppy like jewelry beading needles can be. This is an example of some good beading needles: www.123stitch.com/item/Mill-Hill-Applique-Beading-Needles/123-40221
      I generally use a size 24 tapestry needle when working on 14ct Aida, or when using metallics or fuzzy threads. I like to use a size 26 tapestry needle on 18ct Aida or when stitching with 2 strands on linen or evenweave. If I'm stitching with petite stitches, I'll use a size 28 tapestry needle.
      I hope that helps!

      I'm not sure how I would visualize how I read my chart, because I just look at it. I had it laying at an angle in the video where I could see it, but you could not (for copyright reasons), but I am referring to it almost constantly. I rarely highlight non-full coverage charts, so I probably do handle my patterns a lot less than other stitchers who like to mark up their charts. :)

    Hi. Should not we always use hoop?Could you please tell me when we have to and when is not necessary? Thanks

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  4 года назад +1

      Shiva Tavakoli I think using a hoop, or not using a hoop is a matter of personal preference. I learned how to stitch without one, so I find it more comfortable to stitch in-hand. But most stitchers prefer a hoop or frame of some kind to keep their fabric taut as they stitch. You can try it both ways and see what you prefer! And you might find that you like different methods depending on what type of fabric you’re currently stitching on.

      @@StitchinMommy Thanks for that. I have another question as a beginner. I see some people Take a bigger square to stitch on.3 holes by 3 holes square. In this video when you do 4 cross stitches, They do only one. How is that working? Can we skip one hole and do cross stitch? Thanks and have a happy new year!

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  4 года назад

      Shiva Tavakoli Usually, when you stitch on Aida cloth, like I’m doing in this video, you make one X on each block of the fabric. If you choose to stitch on linen or evenweave fabric, you can often stitch “over two threads”, which is that 3 holes by 3 holes area. Then, if you have a 28 count linen, but you’re stitching over two threads, your final stitches will be the same size as over one block on 14 count Aida. But, on the same 28 count fabric, you could also stitch over one thread, resulting in tiny stitches that are a quarter of the size of the other ones. I like stitching with those tiny stitches as well, as long as the pattern doesn’t call for blended colors, beads, or fractional stitches, because those won’t work with stitches that small.

    Is this an expensive hobby to take up? I'm really interested in giving it a go.
    I live in the UK, if that makes a difference in the price.

      Cross stitching can be expensive if you let it. But, there are also economical ways of getting started. You could start by looking for fabric or small kits at a local craft store. www.sewandso.co.uk/ is a UK online craft store that you might enjoy looking at. There are ways to save and ways to splurge. Basic fabric and DMC can allow the hobby to be inexpensive, while still lovely. Or, you can can branch out to hand-dyed fabrics and specialty flosses. I hope you find some patterns that you enjoy!

    I watch do you honey you do your cross stitching and I had to try to do it without a hoop and I think it works out perfect so I would rather a Crosstitch hoop like you do and it makes it so much easier and when you Crosstitch do you sit in front of the window overhead pretty good bright lightto see them little holes

      Trina Portner My chair is right by a window, but I also have a “daylight” bulb in the lamp over my shoulder, which makes things nice and bright and true colors when trying to take pictures. 😊

      No, at the moment all but one of my projects are stitched on blank fabric. I use a paper or digital chart to know where the symbols go.

      LEAH Mcginley I bought the World of Cross Stitching magazine, issue 249, and this design is in there. You can also find it on the Shannon Christine Designs website. I heard it was released more recently in a second magazine, but I’m not sure which one. I hope that helps!
