I always used a hoop, qsnap or floor frame till I started watching you. I now only stitch in hand. Been having some issues with stitching on linen till I watched this video. Ty for your videos, love them.
Wonderful! I'm glad you've been enjoying this method. It seems linen is probably the trickiest fabric to use in hand, but just takes some practice. I'm not sure how to clearly explain how I make it work, so having a stitch along is probably the best way to communicate that, since you can observe what I'm doing and make your own conclusions as to how it's similar or different than what you're doing. :)
Beautiful project you are doing. I agree with you that, spending money on an app just to keep track of my work is not worth it to me. I write it down in my planner, along with my inventory and parts list for future projects.
Yes! There are other free ways to organize stuff, so I didn't figure it was worth buying a special app. I tried a different free organizing app at one point that wasn't a cross stitch specific one, but even just taking the time to photograph everything was a little too much work for me. :P Excel spreadsheets for the win! :)
Enjoy watching you stitch. I normally use a lap stand except for the Temperature Garden that I'm stitching in hand and switching back and forth to the sewing method. I switch to the stab method when I feel that my stitches are not consistent. I roll the fabric the opposite way so that I don't touch the front of the fabric and stitches.
Aaaaahhh, thank you so much for mentioning me! :D I have actually been wondering why you don't use the sewing method while stitching in hand :D It does work great for me, I couldn't even imagine stitching any other way :D Although I do kind of have my own version of it. While most people I see do their full crosses bottom left-top right-bottom right-top left, I do mine the way my Grandma taught me: bottom left-top right-top left-bottom right, which results in the thread going horizontally on the back instead of vertically. Of course that means I have to keep turning my fabric around after each row, but it makes stitching straight rows, especially longer ones go much faster and easier. :D
You're welcome! I admire your dedication to your projects and how tiny you're able to stitch with the sewing method. :) I love how we each find something that works for us and can make it beautiful! :)
Wonderful! I agree - it is rare to find other stitchers with this technique. More in-hand stitchers are joining the online community, but they often do things slightly differently. Have a lovely stitching day! :)
my theory is I started stitching in my late teens (4o years ago) and was too broke to buy all the paraphanalia..lol..have tried frames but just feel comfy in hand ...happy stitching to you too, you do some beautiful work...
Hi! I just found your channel while browsing for VIlla Mirabilia :) I know this is an old video, but really loved watching you stitch this. Were you able to finish this project? I was browsing to get fabric ideas so I can start mine in 2022.
Hi! No, I haven't finished this project yet. I have quite a few projects so I tend to get distracted. :) It's such a pretty one, though - great colors! I believe I am using the called for Zweigart linen, or something similar, which is a soft sage green color.
I enjoyed stitching with you💜 I am working on a project with big chunks of one color and got bored so started using the sewing method, but my stitched looked awfull, so I stoped that again 😊 Happy stitching 💐
I can imagine it has a lot to do with the fabric you use. And for stitching in hand stiffer fabric is better but the sewing method is less practical and does not look so good. But I might be wrong 🤷🏻♀️😄
Loving this conversation. I am stitching on 14ct aida by DMC , easy guide because I suffer with migraines and have poor eyesight. It was very soft and I found it a little difficult to stitch on. I was stitching on it with two threads and stopped pulling so much after watching you stitching in hand and it helped a lot. I had been listening to so many people chatting about getting great tension. It looked 'drum tight'. I think I may have got confused by this.
I'm glad this video helped you a little bit. It does seem like a lot of stitchers like their fabric to be held very tightly on a frame or hoop or something, so that it doesn't have any give to it while they're stitching. You can probably pull on the thread harder when your fabric is held tightly like that, than if you are stitching in hand. I like having my fingers "up close and personal" with the stitches, and working in a frame has never felt comfortable for me. Happy stitching!
Great video as always... Love to watch you stitch. I agree with you on the starts... Friday Off The Grid Group has a thing called Sunday High Tea where you start something new on the last Sunday of the month as a sort of treat to yourself... I love that idea. Starts should be special for me or when I feel the urge to do so. I‘ve never done Stitchmaynia, the though overwhelms me. Happy Stitching from Germany, Dunja
I am more of a start-aholic than a finisher, but once I found Flosstube, I realized there are people out there who are much more fond of starts than I am! Having hundreds of barely started projects doesn't really interest me. It's nice to have something pretty or interesting to see when you pick up a WIP, so that it can draw you back in to make more progress. So, I suppose doing Stitch Maynia properly will never be something I do either! :)
Thank you for this! So helpful. Do you have any tips on doing the back stitching on Mirabillia patterns? Sometimes the back stitches run across multiple stitches and I’m not sure how to handle them. Thanks for any advice. Hope this question makes sense.
Hi Tammy, Sorry I'm so far behind on replying to comments. Another Stitch Along video I have up shows how I have handled Fractionals & Beading - which can also be used for the skin on Mirabilias. When a backstitch line goes diagonally across stitches - like only 1 stitch across, but 2-3 stitches down - I make that one large stitch. Only if a diagonal backstitch line gets really long - more than about 5-6 stitches long - will I think about breaking it up in the middle of the stitch. That would require putting your needle in the middle of one of the stitches, or puncturing Aida, but it can help keep the long stitch from getting caught on things or getting out of place. I hope that helps!
I'm not sure exactly what brand I'm using here. I often just buy the DMC needles at the craft store. I typically use a size 26 for things that are 2 over 2 like this. I prefer size 28 for 1 over 1 projects. And if something is on 14 count, or when using Kreinik or Wisper thread, I'll size up to a 24.
Wanted to say that I purchased your temperature chart but won't be starting it until January one so I can do a whole year in the same year. Enjoy your videos as always.
Yes, most definitely you can stitch Mirabilias on Aida! She usually only has a few fractional stitches along the edges of the skin, but the rest of the design is full cross stitches.
I just love that Mirabilia pattern! To me it looks like Satsuma Street meets fancy ladies. :) I also stitch in hand and appreciate seeing you do it. I'm very happy with how my stitches look on aida but would like to improve the look on linen, I think it is just a matter of practice since I'm pretty new to linen. It's nice to see you as a "role model." :) Have a great week!
That's a fun analogy! The colors in this one are very bright, and the yellow skirt is a checkerboard print while the blue & purple sash is striped. It kind of seems like it would be garish, but the way she has charted it is so lovely that it just works! :) I'm happy to share how I stitch! I think when I first started stitching on linen, I just jumped in with both feet and didn't question anything. That was back in the days before social media, when there weren't so many opinions to make me second guess things. :) I hope you have fun with it, and enjoy the process!
Hi Vicki, When considering Nora's patterns, keep in mind that she has two lines of designs. Those with the Mirabilia label are usually large designs (take up at least a fat quarter of fabric). There is a smaller line of patterns that use the Nora Corbett label and those are usually small (can fit comfortably on a fat eighth of fabric). So, if you have never stitched one before, you could try a Nora Corbett one to see how you like the addition of beads and stuff without committing to such a large project. Mirabilias are generally not hard, just a lot of stitching! Some of her newer designs call for fancy threads (not just DMC), so that might be something to consider as you choose one. If you look through the patterns on 123stitch.com, for example, you should be able to see in the product description what it calls for, as far as materials go. Above all, choose a design that you really love! I hope that helps!
I love your videos my Danish mother-in-law used to stitch like you & her finishes are as beautiful as yours. Love your soft line can you tell me the name & count when I am trying to order from Etsy I am confused 😮. Thanks
Hello! I'm sorry for the late reply. This fabric is, I believe, 32 count Willow Green linen by Zweigart. I bought it in a shop about 20 years ago, so I'm not sure if it's still available. Zweigart linens are generally softer than Wichelt linens.
I really enjoy watching you stitch and listening to your plans. You inspire me always. It looks like you don’t have trouble with twisting threads. What’s the secret?
I'm glad you enjoy my videos! :) I don't consciously do anything special to keep my threads from twisting. I do need to dangle my needle occasionally to let the thread unwind, so it still happens. Sometimes it's worse than others. :)
I enjoyed your video, as always. You mentioned colored monaco, blue I believe. Where do you purchase that? I usually buy white, or a neutral, but not colored. I would like to find blue as well. Happy stitching!
I realize now that I might have said blue monaco in this video, but the light blue evenweave I have found at Hobby Lobby recently is actually MCG Textiles evenweave. However, I have discovered that, unlike their other evenweave, this fabric is actually even! I started my dragon project on it in February (there's even a stitch a long video with that project: ruclips.net/video/fNiXMDX3iZw/видео.html) and realized it's 28 threads per inch in both directions and handles much like monaco does. I was very happy with it and went out to buy some more for future projects. I even measured some white MCG evenweave after that to test it (I keep a tape measure in my purse and pull it out in the store!) and the white was actually quite even also, even though the antique white was still very uneven. So, maybe they're catching on and improving their quality control a bit? I also found Ritarene on ebay: www.ebay.com/sch/ritarene/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from= and Facebook: facebook.com/ritarenefabrics/, who sells full yards of various fabric, including monaco on occasion. I found some rose monaco a couple years ago, and recently bought some dove grey. If you message her on Facebook, she should be able to tell you if she has any colors available right now. I hope that helps! Happy stitching!
Wow! Thank you for all of the info. I am going to check out Ritarene because the weight and count of the monaco is easy for me to use. I think I may start carrying a tape measure as well. Thanks again!
You're welcome! It's nice to find a variety of sources for things. Then, you can compare prices and options when you need certain things. Ritarene's ebay shop doesn't always have monaco, but she might carry some via her Facebook shop. :)

Vicki Pickstock I prefer to stitch Mirabilia skin 2 over 2, just like it’s charted. I see no reason to give myself 4 times the work for an effect that’s marginally beneficial. All of my fancy ladies bring me joy the way they are. 14ct should be fine for a Mirabilia. There are a handful of fractional stitches on the edges of the skin, but everything else is full cross. I just finished a Shannon Christine Designs fancy lady on 14ct Aida and she turned out beautiful. 😍

diamond painting with orchid Hi! Yes, 2 over 2 means you use 2 strands of embroidery floss and you stitch over 2 threads on the fabric. This video shows this exact set up, and I have a good portion of the video directed at the fabric close-up so you can see what that looks like. I hope that helps!
