Played in the rain for us. Years ago. I was the only one in my crew who made it that night, early enough. Sparta played in the rain, for a handful of Festival Fans. And killed it. You don't forget, as a musician, and music fan, you'll never forget that kind of experience.

Thanks to my dad for getting me into At The Drive In and Later Sparta.

Your dad is a damned fine man and a superlative example of fatherhood. At the Drive In and Sparta got me through my Middle East deployments in 04 and 05. I had tickets to see them after coming back the first time and showed up in the venue to a note on the door saying Paul Hinojos had a medical issue and the show had to be canceled. A week later I learned that they had split and was devastated. I mean, I can’t say that was responsible for my life turning to shit, but I can’t not say it either, lol.

this video is the first time im enjoying something by sparta and it made me think about how at the drive in is such a collision of jims and omar and cedrics creative energy.

I was lucky enough to see this era of Sparta live. July 18th, 2002 at Polaris Amphitheater, opening for Weezer. Wiretap Scars wasn't out yet, but it was less than a month away, so a lot of the setlist was dedicated to it. I hadn't heard any of their material yet, but I was well aware of their existence due to the recent breakup of ATDI. I knew once their set was over that Jim, Paul and Tony were the driving force behind why I liked Relationship of Command so much. I've been a fan ever since.

They stole the show in my opinion. I think they had a big flag of the album as their back drop

I dont want to say Cedric and Omar were the problem because they obviously went on to do great things...but they were holding these other guys back with their self indulgent creativity.

The split was great for everyone involved, them and us fans. Sparta and TMV are so different, but you can pick up each bands style in ATDI
      Amazing

I think they just evolved differently but each needed the other to get where they went. Love all three bands. Omar’s solo stuff is pretty great, too.

      As a fan I think it's perfect.
It made the push and pull of Jim's more traditional hardcore leanings and Omar and Cedric's more spastic experimental excursions that much more clear to me.
You listen to Sparta and The Mars Volta, then you listen to Relationship of Command and you can hear Cedric and Omar trying to take off into outer space and Jim keeping them anchored to earth.... It's what made RoC so special and it's what made me accept that that album is lightning in a bottle, it could only happen at the exact time it happened and only be created by the exact guys that created it.... it makes it all the more special.
That push and pull, that tension and that can't quite put your finger on it feeling of RoC is in the creative tension between the guys who made it.
They could never recreate it and nor should they try. I wish there was more but i know there never could be, so I cherish it all the more.

Nobody sounds like this anymore. Back in the day it was very common to be in a bar listening to multiple cranked half stacks and an Ampeg SVT fridge. Now everything is direct so you don’t get this kind of vibe from live bands anymore.

I know Air was supposed to be a ATDI song but I wonder if this song was too. Arguably sounds the most like an ATDI song than the rest of the songs on Wiretap.

just realizing i've been feeling like a poser for not listening to more sparta.. when i've listened to like every song in 'at the drive-in's' discography, & all their demos n' stuff. seriously though, idk why this band gets so much more under-rated than the mars volta.. when this band had 3/5 members instead of 2, & actually retained the punk ethos. & is generally more musically competent / actually catchy. than just being weird for the sake of you think it's "~artzy~" like the latter lol. this band is most like ATDI. just without the higher notes that were annoying anyway, & the flailings around of a guy on a bunch of heroin seeing how much they can hurt themselves, while omar just plays so fucking sloppy i can almost barely bare to listen to it sometimes, while then just putting it through like 6 pedals to try to mask it, but inherently just makes himself more obnoxious to me for just that reason. this band is actually better lol.

I like all three bands but Mars Volta was definitely more musically competent than Sparta.

Sparta really showed how much of a great songwriter Jim and the rest of the guys were. Musical competency is one thing, but writing solid songs is immeasurable
