Why Railways is Using Stainless Steel to Make Vande Bharat Express

    Boosting inter-city travel services in India, the Indian Railways recently unveiled its first Vande Metro train from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, has supplied the tempered 201LN grade of high-strength stainless steel for this prestigious project. The Vande Metro train is a shorter-distance version of the Vande Bharat Express. Compared with the conventional ferritic stainless steel grade, the thickness of the external panels of trainsets has been reduced from 3 mm to 2 mm, resulting in lighter, more energy-efficient, and therefore, more cost-effective trains. The stainless steel 201LN grade is also extremely corrosion resistant, has higher strength and superior durability, and exhibits better crash-resistant properties, thereby providing the best-in-class safety to passengers.
    Commenting on this development, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, Mr Abhyuday Jindal, said, “We are glad to be a part of the modernisation of India’s railway infrastructure and rolling stock. It’s a privilege to play an instrumental role in Indian Railways’ decision to migrate from the ferritic grade to 201LN stainless steel for the first time ever. The light-weight and energy-efficient car body will reduce the carbon footprint of the Indian Railways and act as a catalyst to achieve its Net Zero target. I am confident that Vande Metro trains will provide a world-class experience to passengers and we are happy to partner with IR on this.”
    The Vande Metro aims to cater to urban commuters travelling distances up to 250 km. It is expected to connect more than 120 cities nationwide and will be launched in July this year. The preliminary routes include Chennai-Tirupati, Bhubaneswar-Balasore, Agra-Mathura, Delhi-Rewari, and Lucknow-Kanpur.

    One Vande Metro should be on Surat-Mumbai and Surat-Ahmedabad route. So many daily commuters on these routes.

    India needs a quantum jump, not incremental steps. As Sudhanshu Mani sir said (in recent JK podcast), we cannot and will not be a developed country until we transport people without dignity, like cattle.

    The main problem is that outer body is not linearly plain and when light hits you can see that it feels like someone has hammered or put sticker on the outer body instead of paint
    Maybe it related to cost or something but corprations should work on this 👍

      Yep compared to that the design and build quality is far better and modern looking in RRTS which is made by Alstom.

    Why is the Vande Bharat body not properly finished? It has so many bends and curves; some areas are a little bit inside and others are bulging outside. It is sort of a painted, unfinished body. And also, there are no curtains inside; it is very difficult to sit near the window in a hot summer.

      We don't have technology to wheeld aluminium. Also our engineers don't have any expertise in building aluminium trains. It can only possible by transfer of technology

    Lighter stronger and durable but problem lies with quality of cutting, moulding and welding of stainless steel with perfect look and finishing also.

    I just googled,and it says stainless steel is more durable and better in anti corrosion than aluminium.
    Just asking tell me why u want aluminum here?

      i think they don't usually use pure aluminium but composite aluminium like a mixture or alloy for better durability and anti corrosion. But ig its costly so that's why they can't use it. But certainly it's better , safer and more durable than steel

    Why use lightweight and durable materials like aluminum alloy sheets or fiberglass when we can use STEEL?!?!

      As per the cost benifit analysis done by Indian railways officers, Stainless steel is the ideal metal for manufacturing rolling stocks in IR's context.
      Another thing, the aerodynamic front design of VB is made of fibreglass only.

    ICF and rcf should be privatised and they should spend a good amount on R&D. We can easily make 250+ km trains for our legacy rail network.
    Parallelly all high density corridors should have a bullet train track. Once we import the first sets of bullet trains, we can start R&D for 350+ kmph homegrown trainsets as well.

      Carbon fibre is super expensive. That is much more expensive than not even Japan nor China use in their latest maglev.
      Just check the Carbon fibre cars price they are more expensive than local trains.
