What really sets Miller’s apocalyptic world apart from other films is he has invented not only a solid post apocalyptic lore but a unique dialogue and language of the wasteland
The director even said that Mad Max films past the original, could be viewed like campfire retellings of old tales. Which could explain details like Max not seeming to have aged, when he should actually be closer to Joe's age, since we know the original Max was around pre-apocalypse. It could be that Max is just like James Bond and simply doesn't age, but it could also be that all the legends of 'The Road Warrior' this mythical relic of the old world, wandering the wasteland to slay the wicked, protect the virtuous and then vanish without a trace; have all coalesced into a single figure, when it reality these films "truth" may have involved multiple different people who have just been rolled into Max's legend. Plus even in the Bond version where it is all the same Max who simply doesn't age, Max gives his name in a single scene (to only a small group of people), reveals almost nothing about his past, displays incredible skills & then vanishes almost as soon as the battle is won, having contributed to massively changing their society in just a few days. Such a person would not take much help to slip into legend, especially since for the inhabitants of the citadel, there's not much more to go than that. They know nothing of the events of films 1-3. To them Max came from nowhere, helped to completely change all their lives (including unveiling the corpse of their former god-king) & then simply disappeared forever.
God I love this concept of the Templin Institute. It feels like an intergalactic/dimensional Institute which goal is to gain as much knowledge from all the worlds as possible. And I really love this sci-fi theme as well
I lost it laughing my ass off at the scene where the Bobble head thing seemed to vigorously nod in agreement when Nux said "What a Day What a Lovely Day" 😆

I only postulated this because of a similar motif in the Ghost Clan of the videogame Rage (2010) as well as on the character Scrooloose (played by Rod Zuniac) in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985). All three may have been inspired by Aborigine body paint (which is actually more ceremonial in purpose and less SPF 50). Another point that may supports this is that neither of Joe's sons, the techs, his wives, or Imperator Furiosa were required to cover the bodies in white pigment. It may be because they spend most of their time protected from direct sunlight. - 6:05. That they spray chrome paint specifically on their mouth, with their lips pulled back to expose their teeth, is in emulation of front grills found on luxury, vintage, and "pimped-out" cars. @@SuperGman117 Well, actually Fallout has very little in common with Mad Max other than being set in a post apocalyptic wasteland. There is a vastly greater presence of communities, settlements, factions and overall population in Fallout. And the stories are usually full of hopeful resonance to a greater future. The closest to feeling like Mad Max is New Vegas, where your character is just some guy(or girl) that comes along out of nowhere, chooses which side he agrees eith, and alters their destinies forever before setting back out into the unforgiving desert wasteland again.

I’ve seriously missed out on the Mad Max story line. Seeing scenes from Fury Road actually gives me nostalgia of playing Motor Storm on PS3. I need to catch up on this glorious concept.
Honestly, Immortan Joe was right. In such a blasted wasteland, conserving and wisely using the infinitely precious water was the right thing to do, rather than just wasting it by "sharing it with everyone" for a month or two of feel-good but ultimately self-destruction crap.
Pretty sure he wasn't rationing it just for fun. Sure he needed to control the means of live to retain power, but having most people thirsting and unfit to be recruited as war boys (and thus expand his army) would be self defeating. Thus he most likely was rationing it simply because there wasn't that much of it to go around. Something Furiosa is bound to find out sooner rather than later...
@@el_killorcure Actually the aquifer underground is large enough to pour continuously for years. Rationing it could last 1000 years at least. He's not going to run out, but he's using the idea of wasting it as a way of establishing how powerful he is. So no, it's not the reason at all.
As much as I would like to be the religious deity of worship with absolute authority, I would like to hope I would do the right thing and create a resource based, free economy with no lords, masters, and as few lies as possible to generate resources for all. Directors, managers, etc would still exist.
1). It's an aquifer. 2). Opening the existing pipes gets water to people who need it right now. 3). Other arrangements could be made once people aren't perishing. 4). Why do there have to be directors and managers? Why not run a resource based economy (ie communism) democratically?
Ummm it’s not endlessly he’s litterly giving them water. And any water absorbed into the ground will go back into his well. He also says that if he gives them unlimited water he will waste it and it will run out. Also those at the base of his tower arnt a part of his empire. They are outsiders that wandered there in hopes of water. He gives all his citizens water.
Ancient Egyptians had the cult of Ra or "the sun god" and Pharaohs were a direct emanation of it. Like most ancient cults there was no conception of "hell" but only of "paradise" which was mostly figured like having access to the "superior world" of the gods who themselves were seen as families with various hierarchies among them, the same for ancient Greek and Roman cults which proposed a number of "greater" and "lesser" gods. It's only roughly 500 years later that a monotheistic cult like Christianity, modelled on older Hebrew beliefs, introduces the concept of "hell" as a systemic part of the supposed "world"...until then mythological punishments by beasts or monsters were actually conceived as punishment but there was no belief of an actual determined place where "bad people" would inevitably end for eternity. This is a Christian concept and it's fear probably is the base of the cult's vast economic success.
This movie is awesome with all the badassitude that the heroes and villains sweat! Even if their religion is a lie, the warboys gave meaning to their lives by seeking a badass way to die. It's kind of sad, but badass!
It still annoys me that Max's car, the Interceptor, got destroyed. That is an iconic car and part of the Mad Max legend. He should of driven off in the sunset in it.
It got destroyed in Mad Max 2 as well. It's actually a very minor aspect of the overall story - he only uses it in the end of Mad Max 1, it's destroyed halfway through Mad Max 2, it doesn't appear in Mad Max 3, and in Mad Max 4 it's around at the start and then later modified and destroyed again
@@michaeljameskeating1348 it's kind of a running gag for Max to rebuild his Interceptor only for it to eventually get stolen or destroyed and sometimes both.
It doesn't look to bad in Fury road, at least to Road warrior. If you watch the scene where it gets recked you can see that it doesn't get completely destroyed. It just falls on its side and the flames from the disintegrating Mercedes hides it from view
Spartan A111, there was some obscure lore in 40k (retcon'd away) that there where supposedly 3 Dark Ages in humanity's history before the Golden Age of Man then eventually Great Collapse then Age of Strife who says this could be one of them.
After everything Immortan Joe survived, he ended up dying because he put his trust in a woman. I don't think that's what the writers intended, but damn.
Incredible film, incredible stories..pretty incredible world. Big fan of the wasteland. I read once "The norm works for a few whilst most are disillusioned, the wasteland works for many, whilst a few cannot last it"
Hey, Templin Institute Is it true that you guys are able to research most of these societies by sending scientist through wormholes? If that's true then could we have a video about the Institute and how it works? Or should I be Quiet about the the Templin Scientist? PS. When are you guys going to do the Martians from War of the world's?(there's multiple, do them all or choose wisely?)
Hmm...you know "he rationed water and kept some semblance of order" is not really a valid counterpoint to "he's a psychotic, bloodthirsty rapist". He's evil for the same reason any dictator is evil, all dictators keep order for their own ends, but they do so only so they may do horrible things to others. Don't rationalize tyrants just because the world's gone to shit, or you'll soon find the same excuses work in our world as well.
Immortan Joe was a frail old man with a frail kingdom, who was wasteful with his resources and irrational with his subjects, his rule crumbled as soon as they dragged his sickly dead body and exposed him for the fraud he was. There was no loyalty, only bribery, no respect, only fanaticism. We can only speculate about what happened after the movie ended, but either way, Furiosa would make for a stronger ruler, she commands respect, she doesn't need to hide behind myth, she has accomplished real things.
Great video! Did you pull the lore and prehistory from the comics? I noticed some of it comes from the Mad Max game from WB Games. See you at Wasteland Weekend.
My name is Max. My world is fire. And blood. Once, I was a cop; a road warrior searching for a righteous cause. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy. Me... or everyone else. Here they come again. Worming their way into the black matter of my brain. I told myself... they cannot touch me. They are all dead. I am the one who runs from both the living and the dead. Hunted by scavengers. Haunted by those I could not protect. So I exist in this Wasteland. A man reduced to a single instinct: survive. Just listened to the soundtrack to Fury Road...pretty high-octane stuff...Blood Bag has to be my favorite...definitely gets your adrenaline pumping, listening on a good round system with the volume up!
You covered Joe's faction perfectly! It's always a pleasure to listen to one of your videos. Suggestion: Wakanda from Marvel or the Forerunner Ecumene from Halo. Please?
@@bandawin18 five months late but, there was a tie in comic that takes place after the events of the movie with a former War Boy veteran telling tales of how the Citadel was seized by Joe from the previous owners, the origins of the War Rig, how Nux became a War Boy, and how Furiosa planned to betray Joe and steal his five breeders. The narrative to evrry game is about building a better world, whereas Mad Max is about scraping along to survive. The closest to feeling like Mad Max is New Vegas, where your character is just some guy(or girl) that comes along out of nowhere, chooses which side he agrees eith, and alters their destinies forever before setting back out into the unforgiving desert wasteland again.
This will be Australia in a few weeks I'm not kidding
Are we there yet?
Uhh dude how did you call that? Like for real. It actually happened.
smilly456 we are there
Almost
And then it didnt
MY BLOOD IS GASOLINE, MY BODY IS TEMPLE, I'M IMMORTAL!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the idea that the 3 big bosses represent the 4 horsemen and Max represents the 4th (death).
Love it!! May I humbly request a video on the "Principality of Zeon" from Mobile Suit Gundam
Yes
All hail the Principality of Zeon!!!
Would love to watch that video. 🙂
That's what I've been asking for too!
My life fades, the vision dims, all that remains are memories ...I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. But mos of all I remember the road warrior. The man we called Max.
OMFGds, this was a great vid - you are getting better and better with every video.
I like how they make the v8 engine and pistons with their fingers that's a nice touch
@@el_killorcure No that’s not the reason
@@el_killorcure didn't those old ladies already fucked Up their water suply?
@@JoeMartinez18 In so many words, yes.
@@el_killorcure Actually the aquifer underground is large enough to pour continuously for years. Rationing it could last 1000 years at least. He's not going to run out, but he's using the idea of wasting it as a way of establishing how powerful he is. So no, it's not the reason at all.
"The water that has so been denied" Has now been squandered and wasted without thought of how much is left in the tank.
We all know youy want to be Joe, but you'll actually be one of the cancerous warboys
@@danielpiechowicz2898 >no lords and masters
>Directors, managers would still exist
What.
"You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!"
Also: "...legendary and infamous Thunderdome..." I see what you did there! ;) :D
Another Extraordinary video Templin!! I've fallen in love with this channel ever since I stumpled across it!
Improves lives of all... by dumping all of its water endlessly
this. fucking lefties.
He gives all his citizens water.
crunch9876 you realize i was talking about the ending right?
A FUCKIN LEAF!!!
Actually, in the comics the citadel apparently becomes a thriving city.
Man what a great channel so informational and I could just watch it all day. It’s like documentaries and Sci-fi I love it.
"shiny and Chrome" sounds like Egypt were as you need gold to go into heaven but if your poor you'd go to hell lol
Well fuck that I guess
Egypt was also ruled despotically using water control so this checks out.
It is always fascinating, both from a literary and a cinematic standpoint, to watch the birth of religious systems.
The game was so good! We desperately need another one.
I really like the way your narrator's tone changes just ever so slightly to suit the topic of the video. It's a nice touch.
I AM AWAITED! *I AM AWAITED IN VALHALLA!!!!!*
Like how this one was done in the same narration style as the video games, with an unknown hero and all
I'm waiting a new movie when they tell us some stories from gas town memories or from the bullet farm
You don't even see the Bullet farm in the movie ffs
As am I, I guess we'll have to just wait another... 10 years?
The guitar speaker rig was by far the best and coolest vehicle and think one of the coolest movie props ever made.
The vehicle itself is quite simple, just a truck with a fuck load of speakers. I think Imortans car or the War rig is better
However the guitarist himself is badass
how about the Caesars Legion? Brotherhood of Steel? The Pitt? the NCR? the Institute? House Vegas? the Masters Mutant Army?
or maybe some factions from Metro 2033...
I'll second the Master's Mutant Army.
I like the fact every Mad Max film is told by a bystander, hence the different POVs
He keeps losing the car, it's a Mad Max theme
he also lost it in the mad max game lmao
@@VANTARTS
Lol. I guess it's his thing then to keep losing the car!
@@michaeljameskeating1348 it's kind of a running gag for Max to rebuild his Interceptor only for it to eventually get stolen or destroyed and sometimes both.
I hope Max gets his car back
Don't worry, it gets destroyed every movie and is still ticking.
It doesn't look to bad in Fury road, at least to Road warrior.
If you watch the scene where it gets recked you can see that it doesn't get completely destroyed. It just falls on its side and the flames from the disintegrating Mercedes hides it from view
What a great video! This is how a backround analysis should be presented.
Immortan Joe: Do you know Joe?
Random guy: Who’s Joe?
Immortan Joe: Joe ma-dammit, that’s my name.
*Pulls out AK*
*Gunshot noises*
That is one in depth story. I thought the movie was about a normal weekend in Australia!
it feels like the pre-unification wars era
Spartan A111
God just imagine.
“Immortan Joe, there is movement in the distance.”
*pan towards the Emperor and his thunder warriors*
Spartan A111, there was some obscure lore in 40k (retcon'd away) that there where supposedly 3 Dark Ages in humanity's history before the Golden Age of Man then eventually Great Collapse then Age of Strife who says this could be one of them.
Everyone knows the Emperor was Kenshiro
gw has done auto wars setting and chaos cults are canon there
The Jarric what if mad max is the emperor in disguise
Thank you for this some elements of the movie had me questioning a lot of the lore. And while the game helps it doesn’t answer all
After everything Immortan Joe survived, he ended up dying because he put his trust in a woman.
I don't think that's what the writers intended, but damn.
Wow this is the best documentary I’ve seen of post-COVID Australia.
Can you do an esipode on the Umbrella Corporation
chris Green
YES! That's what I thought too.
Incredible film, incredible stories..pretty incredible world. Big fan of the wasteland. I read once "The norm works for a few whilst most are disillusioned, the wasteland works for many, whilst a few cannot last it"
Can you look into the two main factions in the comic book series Rogue trooper? Your level of detail on the Norts and Southers would be great
This helped me understand the timeline of Mad Max better than any other video that tries
Hey, Templin Institute
Is it true that you guys are able to research most of these societies by sending scientist through wormholes? If that's true then could we have a video about the Institute and how it works?
Or should I be Quiet about the the Templin Scientist?
PS. When are you guys going to do the Martians from War of the world's?(there's multiple, do them all or choose wisely?)
ain't noone got the clearance for the true story of the Templin institute.
been waiting for the sequel to this.....i've probably watched this movie more than a dozen times
I don't know why Immortal Joe is viewed as a bad guy, he rationalised use of water and centralised power in desert...
Times like that, only a Tyrant could survive
Um...he rationed it by pouring 95% of it onto the ground just to be a dick.
Jordan Thomas tough times demand tougher solutions.
This was so damn cool. One of the best ones yet.
Great video! Did you pull the lore and prehistory from the comics? I noticed some of it comes from the Mad Max game from WB Games.
See you at Wasteland Weekend.
This one gave me chills. WELL DONE!
I am the man
who grabs the sun,
RIDING TO VALHALLAAAAAA!
Do a dossier on Max. He is basically the protagonist of every Fallout game in one body.
When people ask “who’s Joe?”
Joe father
Do the Empire of Sigmar, classic style, not that A.O.S. group
SUMMON THE ELECTOR COUNTS
Well done. Always nice to see a video with such excellent writing.
That is literally the worst possible way to distribute water.
It's supposed to show that he's an arsehole
Not to mention how gasoline (guzzuline) was terribly wasted
Superb analysis!
You covered Joe's faction perfectly! It's always a pleasure to listen to one of your videos.
Suggestion: Wakanda from Marvel or the Forerunner Ecumene from Halo. Please?
Immortan Joe has entered Valhalla, December 1, 2020. Witness him.
"Yes I finally now know who joe is thank you"
Excellent work. I always wondered what some of the lore was behind this movie.
Well it's not that hard to find: There is the original movie-trilogy, also a bunck of comics about Joe, Nux and Furiosa.
Fury Road could definitely have a prequel.
I just wanna know how immortan Joe got to be the way he is, and if he's really toe cutter or not
@@bandawin18 five months late but, there was a tie in comic that takes place after the events of the movie with a former War Boy veteran telling tales of how the Citadel was seized by Joe from the previous owners, the origins of the War Rig, how Nux became a War Boy, and how Furiosa planned to betray Joe and steal his five breeders.
It's really interesting cause it also tells how Max got his Interceptor back after "Beyond Thunderdome" and who that little girl was that he had seen in his hallucinations seen throughout "Fury Road" and why they were happening.
@@EnclaveSOC-102 so was he really just played by the same actor but is a different character? Cuz I like thinking that the reason Joe is more machine than man and held together like Frankenstein's monster cuz of his accident. Still cool regardless though
