Sadly, most people have never heard this performance, and instead only have heard the version used in “Ghost” [the studio/record]…if you listen to that version, you will quickly notice how vastly superior and different this live performance is. So much more power and vocal coloring/agility. One of the greatest live vocal performances in TV history.

It was the studio version you heard in Ghost which is a great version, but if you listen to this alongside the studio version you'd probably agree with me that this live version is near perfection. Near a 1000 other singers have done their version of Unchained Melody, but I can't imagine any of them equaling or bettering Bobby Hatfield's masterpiece.

A decade before Bobby Hatfield's recording, the song was introduced (and sung very differently) in the 1955 prison movie "Unchained", thus the song title "Unchained Melody". Its lyrics make more sense, and carry more gravitas, when you understand that it's about a prisoner longing to be reunited with his lover/wife ... and hoping she'll still love him. . . . This 'live performance' video is from the Andy Williams variety TV show, 1965. . . . Hatfield's studio recording was featured in the Patrick Swayze--Demi Moore movie "Ghost" (1990).

“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 73 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary.
“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’ was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century
"Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965 Andy Williams Show (with his mother sitting right behind him) Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby’s use of “Runs” is masterful. He created the style and set the table that all others have fed off of for decades. 7 notes just to say the word “I” is melodic brilliance.
Their name came from doing a show near a marine base in So Calif and a black marine said to them…. You two guys are Righteous Brothers.
In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

Watching your second take on this song was no matter to apologize for. It is an incredibly moving and emotional song and, not having seen Ghost, I can imagine the theme of the movie and can imagine it fitting. I wonder whether it was this same version.
The song comes from a movie in the 1950s about a married man in prison suffering great anxiety over whether time has changed his wife's love for him (are you still mine?) and why the lonely river cries "wait for me, wait for me; I'll be coming home, wait for me." This performance was one of the greatest live ever. BTW, his parents were in the audience to see him perform.

1000% Better than the studio version that they played on Ghost, this was done Live in front of a studio audience that included Bobby's mother and sister.

Thanks for the shout-out. It would have been nice to hear your reaction to the performance; this is one of the most iconic performances in music history. This is Bobby Hatfield's song- I think virtually everyone agrees that nobody does this song better. He knew he aced the song at the end, when he smiles.
