    Hi Jake. Recently found your channel and I appreciate the content you provide. Out of curiosity, did you leave Schwab for vanguard, or do you have investments in both? If so why and what are the benefits of doing that? Also, when looking at equivalent index funds from vanguard/fidelity/schwab, how can I tell which is better to buy? I'm new to all of this. Thanks!

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 года назад +7

      Hey hc797! I will eventually make a full comparison video between Schwab/Vanguard/Fidelity highlighting the small differences, but they are small. I recommend all three, and I will be using all three. I will be doing long-term individual stock investing with Fidelity, short-term swing trading with Schwab, and I have a Roth IRA where I will be indexing with Vanguard. I am definitely making things more complicated than it needs to be, but because I will be making RUclips videos about all three platforms, it makes sense for me to be using them all. As for the equivalent Funds between the three, they all perform identical, the only difference is their expense ratios and the difference is minor. All are good options.

    Thanks for the great video. I have vanguard brokerage account and love it. Learnt a lot from your video on how to navigate and what else is out there. I have been considering their digital advisor services which I believe is robo (not human) which is what I prefer. But being so diversified already with mid small large cap I am not sure how much it can help me. Even if I sign up now, end of the year selling of my existing taxable funds will trigger cap gains taxes. Is it better to wait till January? What’s your advise ? Or should i just continue do it yourself approach?

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 года назад +2

      Robo advisors on these platforms are free, so I don't see a problem, but they also aren't necessary. If you are investing in retirement accounts, then you don't have to worry about taxes year to year. If you are investing in an ordinary brokerage account, then yes, if you sell you will have to report your capital gains from the sale and pay taxes on the growth this tax year. Is that a good idea? That's up to you. Depends on your income this year and what level of taxation you want to pay overall. Without knowing anything else, I would just say hold what you have and buy more of what you want when you have the money to do so. Cheers!

    Question - I currently invest all my money in SWTSX through Charles Schwab. I was curious if you thought that gives me a large opportunity for growth. I am not planning on touching any of this till retirement age so I would prefer my money to be in funds that can grow at a very large rate and later down the line I can adjust it to less risky funds. Are there any other Schwab funds you think I should put my money in?

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 года назад +3

      Hey Alex! SWTSX is a great fund. You are in every stock publicly traded on the NYSE proportional to its market cap size. The fund is up over 400% since the market's March 2009 lows and that doesn't include the re-invested dividends. Just buy and hold, re-invest dividends, and ignore the market when it goes down (buy more if you can). You'll have a great fortune in 20+ years.

I am not a Day Trader, it's buy and hold for me. I was with Folio for a decade or so until they closed up shop. I was transferred to Interactive Brokers and it's all too confusing. I'm wondering if I should just transfer everything as is or liquidate all but Vanguard investments then transfer to them. BTW I'm retired in Okinawa, my wife teaches at UMGC on Kadena. That .04% expense ratio is only for Admiral class shares. There is a $10K minimum that must be invested in that fund to get that rate. Admiral shares are one of the biggest attractions to having a Vanguard account. People that buy Vanguard through other investment banks only get Investor Class shares regardless of how many dollars they buy.

    this is great info thank you! i love their low expense ratio and i'm very tempted to open an account...but if i have the ability to do Roth 401k thru my employer....does it not make sense for me to manage my own personal account until i'm to the point of maxxing out my Roth 401k thru my employer? again thank you for the content

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Troy! You can always open a Roth IRA with Vanguard and contribute to your Roth 401k through your employer. It's up to you which you want to do. Or you can do both.

    Vanguard looks like a great choice for IRA's. Low fees, specialises in ETF's and bond's, abundance of resources and info. Yeah bare bones but use something like webull to track individual stocks..

      @@JakeBroe If I may ask as well, how do bonds fit in to IRA's? I heard so many opinions on them, avoid them, avoid a particular type, add sooner, add later. From what I heard they help as a stable back up for the volatility of the stocks and funds. But been hearing the likes of Warren Buffet and Ray Dalio say they are bad news.

      @@kingrichardiii6280 , if you want to hold bonds in an ordinary brokerage account for short term growth because you might need that money in the near future, that makes sense. However, holding bonds in a retirement account for decades mathematically makes no sense to me. Avoid bonds in retirement accounts.
