I disagree with your argument against the conventional 'Happy Ending". I believe the description of Estella having 'softened" or changed in the years between when Pip spoke to her last warrants a bit more hope for the reader about a potential relationship between the two. Pip was always keenly aware of the shortcomings in Estella's character but chose to overlook them.
