Mate! I love how you make it on the coffee table in the lounge room, My missus would have my balls if I did that! She caught me cleaning the 223 there and it was mega! I love how simple it is, thank you an excellent job.
My uncle taught me a different way, about 40 years ago, and from the (probably poor quality) sound on You Tube, mine make a much more convincing wounded rabbit. They are also much, much better than the button whistles you buy from the gun shops. I don't trim the lid, just fold it in half. Hammer it so it's a sharp bend - don't bend it over a nail. Punch a hole right through with a smaller nail (~2.5mm diameter, about 6-7mm from the centre of the hole to the edge), open it up and file off the bottom sharp edge (this becomes the top of the whistle). Don't file off the inside crater from the bottom of the hole (on the inside of the whistle) Close it back up again so there is minimal gap between the crater of the top punch, and the inside of the bottom surface of the top flap. The hole should be about 2.5mm in diameter, about 5mm from the edge of the hole to the edge of the folded lid. Blowing is the hard bit - use your tongue to block all airflow through the bottom hole. That is, blow through the top hole only - in fact, don't blow.....puff. Wiggle the whistle from side to side to get the vibrato that makes a convincing rabbit distress call. Put the whistle further into your mouth to get a deeper note, and a more guttural rabbit scream. Keep your lips relaxed and loose. If you've never heard a rabbit scream, then you'll never get the most out of your whistle, because you don't know what sound you're trying to reproduce. I'm not suggesting everybody goes out and gut-shoots a rabbit - that would be terribly cruel.
bought a stainless Tenterfield from ebay 2 yrs ago it worked a treat, now its gone and they guy now want 25 bucks for one..will defo try making one from this video..thanks mate
Like it my mate used to use the back of his hand and bought the fox in it I have tried this for years no luck but will be making one these thanks for the up load
Nice one mate - I've been making much the same for a few years and they always work well - ignore the personal comments - some folk are just ignorant!! keep up the good work!! ;)
Never enough grandfather tips and tricks handed down through the generations so Cheers mate, thanks! May someone save more native species by ridding another fox after the viewing of this video:)
love the sound! made a few of these from your video and get same sound - love the fact that they are really loud, great on a windy day, but yet to bag a fox - thanks for demo on how to whistle, I use a .22 Hornet for foxes
Fox Whisperer, you are the champ! I made one yesterday arvo, went out with the spottie last night and scored 2! Easy as cheese and biscuits to make and sounds spot on, worked an absolute treat! Bugger you live up NSW, would have loved to come out shooting with you sometime. All best and keep them foxes rolling! BangBang
top notch mate, I'm just's getting into the shooter scene and this will come in handy not only calling up foxes but alerting rabbits for clear shots. cheers mate, you got my like.
@MrVoere22lr Cheers mate thats great I wish you luck with it. They work good on foxes. They just take a little timr to learn how to blow. Just the tip of the tonuge on the bend.
Thanks Asher I am glad you work it out allot of guys have a little trouble blowing the tenterfield whistle. Its easy to make one my grand father made them years ago. I am getting them on bird calls at the moment. It funny I have run into a few hunters that have seen my videos Never know one day we mite bump into each other. Cheers Max
bloody good idea mate wish I had of seen this before I spent my hard earned 17 dollars on a Tenterfield whistle from gun shop, also keep up the good work on the videos, I have recently started shooting again after a ten yr or so gap and your video's have been very helpful and entertaining .
Well good luck Billy with your hunting and thanks for your comment it always good to here I helped someone. I get plenty of abuse from my videos. Sometime I wonder why they watch them if they dont like hunting?
Good on you mate, it mite taking a little while to learn to blow it but the foxes love the sound. I have got a good mate hear from Irealand Joe Midldeton his a block layer hear in Aust but he's hard to understand lol, hes got a real Irish accent
just made one and within 2 minuites figured it out heading out in a few hours for a morning sesh!! thanks from scotland!!(gonna use the shotgun see how close thyl really come ;) )
I bought the silva, though this sounds so close if not identical. I'd like to add, the foxes can't resist this type of whistle, they come out during the day for it. it's my favourite whistle type. Mind you, the wife hates me using it too close to the house at night when I'm out calling. I got the 1000 like, like who cares, love your vid's mate and seeing your boys out there, who are unreal good shooters. Hey from Milton, one of your haunts I assume.
i think our irish foxs will like your whistle. im gona make one tomoro & give it a blast. seen simular at a hefty price on uk hunting channel..all the luck of the irish to ye...
Shit hot mate !! Made one and tell your late granddad thanks, bloody amazing.. my kelpie hates puss puss aka foxes or feral killers. Took half arvo to master it then he's off haha
good vidio. I seen another vidio tat a lad use two bits of timber with insulating tape between them and I made it and works great not hard to whistle with either.
Question for you. If I put the holes too far away from the folded part will that make it not work? I did everything right, I believe, and no sound. I made one with holes too big and get sound but it sounds more like a train whistle.
I look forward to making the fox caller and using it in Leicestershire in England. My wife would shoot me if I used our coffee table to make the call. Dave Thanks
Yeah I heard a few times that people pay for these whistles, Good luck with the rifle I use a 204 Ruger for foxes. Cheers and good luck with the whistle.
There's a website that charges $44 for one of these. I zoomed in and it looked lust like a piece of tin. I then thought 'lets Google it' and bingo there you were with a out of the pantry solution :) Now to invest in a rifle for the farm. Thanks mate.
And it works with gray foxes? Sorry for so many questions, I've never done this before and I want to try this winter, there are many foxes and do much damage to the flock during the breeding season. Another question, i dont I have a high-powered rifle like the ones you are using, I have a .22 magnum and a shotgun twelve, which would you recommend? Thanks for answering. Greetings.
I'm from Argentina, and my grandparents have a beef and sheep farm in the mountains, I wanted to ask if this whistle works when the population of rabbits and hares is scarce. Sorry for my spelling mistakes, my English is not very good and use the google translator. Regards, and good hunting.
I actually have a question for you. I was given a Button Fox Whistle for my birthday so I can call in foxes to film them and take pictures of them. Do Button Whistles work in urban places? I'm just curious.
I dont use a button whistle. I mainly use bird calls. In the city try making a squeaking noise with your mouth on the back of your hand when you see one in the city
hi mate sorry for taking time to anwswer you. I just made a video of how I get propertys check it out. I whistle up 2 foxes off the side of ghe road while I was out their. Cheers mate hope your huntings going well
as long as there are some rabbits or hares you should be good, but if they are extremely rare than you may not succeed with this - better off with a spot light and a .22 at night time
Hi Fox whisperer. I've just tried a couple of these and got one to make the right sound, but it's really quiet compared to yours and others I've heard. Too quiet. Am I blowing it wrong or am I making it wrong? Cheers
Mate! I love how you make it on the coffee table in the lounge room, My missus would have my balls if I did that! She caught me cleaning the 223 there and it was mega! I love how simple it is, thank you an excellent job.

Yeah, I guess you're right mate. Do you mind if I post a link to this video on our facebook page Recreational Hunting of Feral Animals?

They will work on Grey fox. a 22 is ok and 12 gauge shot gun is good I use BB shot in my shot gun.

Hi Fox whisperer. I've just tried a couple of these and got one to make the right sound, but it's really quiet compared to yours and others I've heard. Too quiet. Am I blowing it wrong or am I making it wrong? Cheers
Make sure you keep the tip of tongue on the bend of the whistle and just practise. Sometimes you need to muck around with the size of the holes
