Sydney gets wheelchairs on public buses (1995)

  • A big moment for the disabled, when we took the NSW State Transit Authority to court and won. All new Sydney buses would have wheelchair ramps from that day forward.

    I remember those silver rails on buses in the middle of the entry. It took a number of years to phase that out. Unbelievable even as late as 1995 Sydney's transport was entirely unaccessible for disabled people.

      I know my local depot still has 4 buses with those stairs but they are usually used on school routes.

      Lowfloor buses didn't become the norm in the UK and Ireland until the mid 2000s

    Buses from Bustech (Most state transit and transdev buses) have ramps now.
