My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!
Oh and Jess looked like a Parisian postcard, she just needs a cute scarf to tie her hat on with.
Ooh, good idea
"Leave no man behind".
Jay Swanson, 'imma gonna boost up this hill'.
(Jess rapidly fades into the horizon).
😂
😆😆
Was cool to see myself win something, but even better to have my name said correctly for once. Thanks Jay!
Jay…you snd Jess make a lovely couple. I hope you will advance beyond the “friend zone”.
That was fun run around town. So glad you have wheels to get about again. Oh, and the weather looked beautiful!
Jess is making me melt today!! O MG
Congratulations Jay! The bike looks amazing! Good luck! Jess is so sweet. Loved her outfit and hat!
Jess is so beautiful naturally and that hat is perfection. Really enjoyed the Midnight in Paris Steps. Watched it again just 2 weeks ago. Thanks for sharing.
I did too! Such a fun movie
Happy we could share a little nod there =D
I knew it would work out for you in the end. It's so nice to see you riding that brand new bike. I wish you all the best-Raul Enrique
Having lived in Germany 3 years we know first hand how anything made in Germany is uber righteous! (attention to detail). I love the bike, you look good on it. Love the seat and handgrips. I hope you find it worthy just so you can journey about not just on your tootsies :)
Such a beautiful bike! Really happy for you!!
Thank you!
Nice video .. good luck Jay with your new velo .. i have to repair my velo this afternoon ...
The hat is the third character here.
"And the Academy award for best supporting actor" goes to....
Your himiway looks badass. The white is nice and visible. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does on a long haul.
Omg, Jess's outfit totally rocked.
Cheers! 😎
Watching your videos make mo miss that beautiful city you are so blessed to call him. Stay safe and continue on your chosen path.
Jay on a bike again, what a lovely sight to see!
Happy to be mobile again
The Paris light in Summer is so glorious.
Congrats on getting & being able to assemble your new bike ❗️👍😺
Wow! Super cool! “A bit heavy”, could indicate more sturdy and dependable. Time will tell. Great good luck, and tell Jess she is sturdy, dependable, and absolutely exceptional without being “a bit heavy” in the least, lol! It is always very wonderful to see her smiling face! Thank you!
Sweet bike! Will keep our fingers crossed that this one is more reliable than the last! Jess is delightful as usual!
Wow! What a beautiful blue sky and opening scenes. That bike looks wonderful, I'm glad you like it. Jess' hat looks great on her.
It was a great day to try out a new bike!
Very cool bike Jay! Can't wait to go back to Treize this fall.
Very enjoyable vlog! Thank Jay!
My pleasure!
Like that bike.! So hope this is a better experience. And what a gorgeous day to go bike testing. Great to see Treize again!
I missed them!
I so love that you are trying out this bike as I have been interested in it as well. Another RUclipsr just got sent a pair of Himiways, Sara &Luca(LeAw Leave Everything and Wander) and they are in Italy, so this is great, lots of reviews coming on this bike. What I worry about is the weight, over 70 lbs. Really enjoyed you and Jess testing it out on such lovely Parisian day. Thanks!
Just Googled 70 pounds. It's over 30kg!??! That's a heavy bike.
The bike looks great. I also love the handle on the back. Where did Jess get that 4€ hat...I want one! Enjoying the lovely weather, like you.
I like it, it looks like a library bike (space for books!!) and the wood detail is great! And it works!
Woohoo on new bike! Like others here, digging Jess's outfit. Boca Mex was delightful- was recommended by Le Peloton bike tour guide. Getting to order in Spanish was a brain break from French 👍That cruise stop near end - 👏
Wow that new bike looks like the “Rad mini step through” that also comes in white , same seat and grips and handle under seat ( very useful) though the Rad ( made in the USA) has smaller wheels size, great commuter bike, hardly any suspension, so not so great for trails, but solid as a rock. Glad you have a bike at this time, summer in Paris is the best time for bikers. Question: do you have to give it back.? or is it a freebie?....I would take it to a bike store for a tighten up and tuning.
The color of the sky is crazy amazing!
Yay to having a bike again. 🎉 super enjoyed this toddle about town. I miss biking in Paris. #needtogetback
The poor hat! Lol It’s fun to see the world slowly going back to “normal.” I’m so much more reclusive now. I had fun watching you getting out and meeting friends!
Catching up from your home state. Visiting my son in Richland.
The video is 😍 gorgeous. Nice of them to send you a bike. Looking good. Hat drama ......what a day in Paris ❤🌈 Thank you for sharing.
Some people are into artisanal bread, Jay is into artisanal bicycles...😄
Haha, hand crafted with love and frustration
@@JaySwanson 💖👍🚲
Two things! I love that bike!!! I hope it works because it's the most beautiful bike I've ever seen. Thing two: I love your tshirt. Jess really knows her stuff.
Thanks! And yes she does =D
Fun video. Jess is delightful!
Congrats to the winners!
😎🎉🎉
Looks like a wonderful bicycle. Still the stigma of being "Van Moufed" lingers .Lets get by a month to we start getting confident. The beautiful Jess and weather, what a combo!
Haha, I feel the same way. Funny how reluctant I am to trust bikes atm (not funny but you know what I mean)
Looks like a cool bike, I would change the brown handles and seat to black, and paint the wood thing black or stain it dark for a more sleek city look, maybe add some metallic colored stripes to it too.
White isn’t my favorite color but I like the style of the Himiway bike. Looks like a nice comfortable ride. Can’t wait to see more about how it performs.
I'll be sure to report back =D
Nice Paris weather! Nice bike and pretty Jess too! But that last drink may have gotten one in trouble for DUI…😉
Gotta give it a solid sit first =D
Loving Jess’ outfit!!
Followed your disastrous Vanmoof journey and so relieved personally to have my own purchase fall thru. I ended up with a beautiful Moustache. A French brand that should have hopped all over your Paris adventure! The new bike looks a little ugly to me but seems comfortable and glad to see you back in the saddle :)
That is one sharp, cool bike! 😍 🚲
looks like a good looking bike!
It is!
I’m really impressed with that bike so far. I know it is not as sci fi looking as the other one (I do not miss the Cylon power up and down noise on the other bike, though, amongst a lot of other things). I kinda got the feeling you don’t think this new one is as sexy as the other one. I gotta say, though, the retro vibes are awesome and it’s so good seeing you on a working bike! I hope you keep it and use the refunded money to invest in more tech you need for all the ventures you have going on. You might really grow into loving this bike. I hope it works for you!
Thanks Karin! I'm still open to buying the right bike for me as well, if this one doesn't pan out. But if I do end up with money leftover, it's going straight into Secret Project #2 =D
@@JaySwanson Excellent!! 👍🏼😃👍🏼
That was fun. Hope that bike works out for you!
It's a comfy one!
Great book!
Thanks!
Where did you get the burritos ? I've purchased your guide, but couldn't tell what you said.
Upright stance with electric power.. perfect commuter bike❤️
Happy to see you have a new bike to try. Good karma after all the headaches with vanmoof. Enjoy it!
That looks like a really nice city bike whereas the Van Moof was a road style bike. For riding around Paris, it will be more comfortable but less so on long rides out of the city. It looks like the saddle is slightly nose up. You definitely want the saddle to be level or it will put pressure where you really don't want pressure, at least on longer rides. If it's nose down, you'll tend to slide forward.
Yeah, gotta get the saddle leveled - Jess noted that too (she's the expert). Otherwise so far so good =D
Jess I love the hat.
It's a great one
Nice looking bike!
I liked the white/leather combo
That is the perfect bike for commuting in a city. The pass through style will be really appreciated when you load up some panniers or a basket in the back Also nice to be able to take the battery in to charge The vanmoof was stylish but not really practical This bike has suspension and that upright style will be better for safety. Try shifting to a low gear before going up a hill. You will notice a difference.
I got that bike a few weeks ago. I love it!
Cool! It's really comfy
Maybe you could help translate the instructions forJay!
@@pjlacey3990 I had to look to RUclips to figure it out as my German isn’t that great 🥴
Yaaaaaayyy for a new bike! Hope you enjoy!
Thank you!
I get that the Himiway isn't techie looking (which I'm thinking is more your style) but it is a beautiful blend of vintage and functional tech. And the customer service of seeing an awful experience with 'the bike that shall not be named' and sending you a free beauty is a real breath of fresh air. Also, I never knew burritos 'tinked' when hit together ;)
Yeah, they're really nice. I'm happy with their team if nothing else - very hands off and trusting. Top part of the experience right there =D
Good for you!🚴♂️
Thanks!
Yesss un nouveau vélo 😀🚲
Neat bicycle. Very much in the style of Dutch city bikes. I'd like one. So, what's happened to the uni-wheel?
Super! Merci
👍👍
You and Hemingway share the same birthday...a sign?
How lucky are you that you were sent that bike FREE!!
For sure!
Sweet!
First?!
Congrats on the bike dude. :)
Looks like it! 😎🥇👍
Thanks!
Nice bike
The bike would be cooler if your pedalling recharged the battery hehe. Also a little solar panel.
It could become self-recharging all around =D
Nice apresentation.
Great Bike !!
But what is about the size for a man like me with nearly 190 cm ??
It will be to small ??
I'm 185cm, so I think it would still work for you - there's room left to raise the seat at least =)
@@JaySwanson thank you
The thing that we all want to be true... I want it to be true. If it’s true, I will demand cute tshirts!
No hats while biking through Paris... check! 🤣
That should be their new ad campaign. Himiway - Too fast for hats!
Salut, Jay! Oh my! This is kinda freaky. I just ran discovered you via your video with Nathaniel Drew. But, that is not the part I find freaky. I've never, ever met anyone who is actually from Pullman. My sister went to WSU, but to come across someone who is originally from Pullman? That lives in Paris!?! No way! And, to put this all in perspective, j'habite à Yakima!
nice bike
Nice bike!! Can't stop singing....
In the city the quiet city...
The bike will sleep tonight....
A Himiway A Himaway...
🚲🚲🚲
Himiway is a very similar clone of my Rad Power (even the same leather handle grips) except there is no twist throttle ala motorcycle style throttle. This allows you to ride it like an electric motorcycle with no pedaling (if desired). THIS IS SO NECESSARY!!! I also have the 5 levels of boost, but the throttle on the right handle is SO awesome. The motor on the back wheel looks a lot smaller too. Maybe Himiway has a model one step up from this? Don't buy this bike, you need not only boost, but throttle (and a larger motor).
that seat and those handlebars tho'.
I liked the Vanmoof, but then again I like my bikes to work......
Yeah, sadly =/
Think you should give the bike to Jess Jay, she looks so much cooler on it than you haha! Nice vlog, can we see samaritaine when you're passing next. Didn't realise it was undergoing restoration, been a while since I was last in Paris. (5 Years)
She definitely makes it look MUCH better. And yeah! Samaritaine is almost ready to open again!
Get some bungee cords or a milk crate and bungee cords, or spend some cash and buy the saddle bags for the back. Now you can transport groceries, etc, hands free.
We were just talking about bungee cords =)
Himiway just gave 2 ebikes to you tubers LEAW Leave Everything. And Wonder for them to review. Seems like a great company.
Seems like they've got their heads on straight - really happy they reached out.
they need to put a white battery on that. small extra $ but huge ++ looks
Nice city bike, smart price, shimano drive and motor, samsung battery, aluminium frame, 120km per charge,...
german engineering and polish built ?
Sounds like a good summary to me!
The chain needed to be Ad"Jess"ted
So when is Jess going to open her bike shop as a side gig? Also: forget the chain lube; use chain wax. It's much more involved to put on, but longer lasting and doesn't attract dirt.
I do like the bike
Jay, would love your take within the distant future on how France (specifically Paris) will be opening up to tourists again soon. Would you let us know if Paris is still very much keeping the mask mandate? Also, is it easy to find a covid testing place in Paris for English speaking tourists?
Hey Somie! You'll have to keep an eye on the official government releases to know the answers to most of your questions - I don't have any special insights. But testing is generally really easy here - especially if you walk in the day before to make an appointment (for PCR tests in particular - antigen tests are usually doable on the spot at many pharmacies). Hope you have a great trip when things open up!
Only Brompton adds coming up Today ;-)
Try reading some Thomas Sowell next time you’re on the Metro.
👍
I missed it by one!😭
🚲🚲🚲
Oh you meant on the giveaway! So cloooose!!
A couple of things. First, Jess looks FANTASTIC! And probably is but I couldn't say. I am an older married woman who doesn't give women a second glance except in solidarity, or at any woman who would bite the head off of her sister and not even break stride. I hear about Man Crush, is that the right word when a straight man crushes on his man friend? Giving this topic excessive amounts of space only to say that I think I have a girl crush on Jess. I know how i think, am just unsure of the words of the day.
Secondly, I have looked at and wondered about ebikes more seriously since the VanMoof saga. There are so many, so costly and the press sounds good but you dig deeper and discover quirks about a bike that I would otherwise refer to as serious issues. I used to ride my bike everywhere when i was a late teen older twenty years, but then kids and work and......old. Got a warning for speeding once, only, when speed limits on bikes did not exist. But there is something about riding a bike and the wind in your hair, keeping you cool when it is hot out, enjoying the thrill while building up steam for the big hill nee mountain you are quickly approaching, you know? Now kids are grown, most grandkids are grown but no greats yet and I am a pensioner past the age of the daily grind who wants to get back on a bike, but again, old..... So am interested in an ebike. And I found one! I loved the look of the Himiway from the moment you pulled it out of the box and I think I found my bike! Initially disappointed that they seemed to only ship to the EU but one of their articles referred to the pedelac being popular in the States. Huh? Look up to the top right of their webpage. See EU/US and click on US. Wonderful! I will, of course, research the bike but that becomes easier when you have a specific bike in mind. Just bought a bus for husband's wheelchair as well as husband and that thing is a beast! What is? All three, the bus, the wheelchair and the husband but I was referring to the wheelchair with elongated cast iron footrests that has taken out a door and my shins and requires a bus. So the bike purchase will have to wait a couple of months. I had better get on my research the bike and start swooning about it to the kids for a month or three so that the kids decide that this would make mom really happy. Better get to work! Can you track comments through a RUclips page? Should this be deleted?
Thanks Jay! Oh! Sorry to be late. GREAT VIDEO! THANKS
Dang Jay. I was #381. Swine random generator. 👍
Google strikes again!
I cant believe when my eyes fluttered open after sleep, the first thing I think about is Jay! Whats Jay up to? Theres Paris Its so nice there.Jesse! I adore her! Shes like a walking poster Child for Come to Paris and buy a hat. Hey your hat is cool I really like the Bike, its German, like me American German(and whatever other breed I am???? ) I would Love Paris. Paris in the Spring time Marvelous, but my Astrology says Lyon even though Lyon looks boring. That IS a nice Bike!!! WOW! its weird but I cant ride a bike the brain body connection is only programmed for Buses and Trams...midnight in Paris Jess, I love that movie,Now I need to order that again.Yoga now,Paris is pulling me me to France.By the way,I watched Pauls Latest Live and ...you were not there Jay,and the guys there gave me a headacke i said, OMG! I'll hate Paris and France if I had to listen to that NO Offence Paul (SORRY) Why ? am I still here where I am? Thanks Jay,see ya tomorrow!
Burrito envy, mmmmmmmmm 🌯
Hello bike...good bye hat.😅
Nice bike, have you heard anything from VanMoof?
they refunded his money
@@gingerdean1521 theoretically maybe they're sending him another bike but they haven't sent him the info shipping yet. That's why i asked that question...
Theoretically indeed - I'll follow up today and let you know what I find out 🕵️♂️
@@JaySwanson I really hope vanMoof gives you a bike, if only for the long wait and the bad service......
Maybe it's the American in me but I have never seen a bike in a box 😃
They all come in a box (just like that one) to the bike shop or the department store. This one is much more assembled than the ones sent to bike shops.
Evening Jay had a laugh got impression jess knows more about bikes than you lol
She totally does - I would guess by far
I would enjoy that bike I think 🐱🌷🌹🐦🎶💃🌈🌞
It's fun!
Don't look a free bike in the mouth.
IMO it is much cuter and sexier... #justsayin
It's a fun one!
