- Whilst in Mumbai I was told that the old Crawford market was the place to check out and so I set off in search of colonial architecture and market stalls. Join me on my exploration.

Hi Bald, in answer to your question, Arthur Crawford (1835 - 1911) was the 1st Municipal Commissioner and Collector of Bombay (Mumbai). He brought down the mortality rate by 50% in the city by introducing strict imposition of health safety rules such as clean, streets, clean water and managed drain system.

How wonderful to see the market, my family were stone masons to the British Raj and my father told me that we built Crawford Market and owned it at some point, the first proper market in Mumbai. We also built Victoria Termanis Station, and built the first aquaduct supplying water to the growing Mumbai where we found whilst blowing up the mountain a Mogul Emperor's treasure and gave it to the British Raj, the treasure was a gift to Queen Victoria.They then gave my family a large part of Mumbai to build upon. Non of this wealth ever found its way to us though.

You should next visit Calcutta/Kolkata , the British built capital of the Raj. It has a lot of British era architecture, street layouts , gardens, cemeteries, etc. It also has unique fusion food from the mixing of Bengali, British, and Awadhi cuisine. I am from Calcutta and have lived for a bit in England. This stay was a great period of exploration for me, and finding out the shared history India and GB has in food, architecture, urban planning, etc. For example, I realized some of the Kolkata foods have a partial British origin, such as the Calcutta fish fry, and the aloo chop. A lot of the architecture in Cal is mirrored in Kensington, Chelsea , Kent and Brighton.
