They grow wild here where I live in Missouri, U. S. A. They usually can be found here as an understory tree in semi dense woodlands where they get plenty of filtered sunlight. They will often form groves or thickets as they will send up suckers from the roots. Zebra swallowtail butterfly larvae feed on the leaves. The spring flowers are quite nice and ornamental and the leaves have a tropical look. I have one outside my kitchen window that has been there for a long time. There are some grafted varieties currently available that have been selected for improved fruit production over the wild but I have yet to try them.
