  • Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I have a special guest, my sister Abigail! She is here to help me teach Shoot-The-Ducks, a fun move that is really going to strengthen your legs for sit spin down the road. Abigail used to be the Shoot-The-Duck queen, she could hold the position with no hands, for over a minute circling around the rink. Pretty impressive! I am so glad she could join me for this one.

    Dear coach Julia,
My name is Josephine and I live in Sweden. I am 8 ½ years old. I have been practicing so hard to do shoot the duck. After watching your video, I finally managed to do it. Today I was asked by my teachers to demostrate shoot the duck in front of my whole group. I felt so proud. Thank you so much for making your videos.

I used to do it (this was one of my "I'm so proud of" elements, because most of my schoolmates were not able to perform this) ... 25 yrs and some, not only a few, kgs less ago 😆 I'm almost 40 now and I told myself, that the day will come and I will be able to perform it again. Together with other simple elements I used to know. A good motivation to show my kids what their mum knows... 😆 And a great motivation to start to work on how my body looks like and works. I like your videos really a lot. You explain all steps really well. Thank you for your work for us!

At 41 this skill is soooo hard for me. I can still demonstrate it somewhat, but it isn't pretty! 😆

Appreciate that you tell us the name of all these moves you show. I love that I can use the name and not just that “squat leg forward”move. 😁 AND you show sooo many moves to improve and help skaters to gradually advance to more difficult moves. I use your videos for inline 😉 Awesome!!

You're so welcome! I am glad you find my videos helpful! (I used to never be able to keep the names of moves straight. It wasn't until I started coaching that it finally sunk in! 😆)

Unless you are British in which case this move is a "teapot" (possibly because we like tea and are not big on shooting stuff.)

This one I get up until it's time to stand back up. Good thing shoot the duck is close to the ice. Not far to fall. I'll try next time with your sister's advice.

My issue with this one is flexibility. My body won't bend that way. Do you have any recommendations for any specific stretches/exercises to get the flexibility for Shoot the Duck and, later, sit spins?

Hey Coach, I'm amazed how long Abigail's is in a glide. Going into the move, it seems, speed is essential

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 года назад +5

She does a pretty impressive shoot the duck! And yes, speed really helps, and you slow done it becomes harder to maintain the position.

Thanks to both of you for making this video! It was hard for me to hold the position. After seeing this video I think I know what the problem is. Question: Does the shoulder-knee-rocker alignment work also for backward shoot-the-ducks? Any other tips for doing it backwards?

    • @CoachJulia

It definitely works for backwards shoot-the-ducks as well!

aahhh just when I've hung up my skates for the season! All my indoor rinks are closed due to lockdown and likely won't be open again until September :'(
I did many shoot-the-ducks this winter, but could never quite get low enough and when I did, I never managed to hold one beyond 5 seconds. Based on this video, it turns out my shoulders were too far back! That, and I need stronger legs 😂
Your videos are so helpful! Can you more tutorials on compulsory figures?

When I try to do this my extended leg starts shaking violently. I’m not afraid of falling so that’s not it. I can’t even get into the position off ice. Is it a leg muscle weakness?

A few years ago a physiotherapist I spoke to told me that a pistol squat is an advanced move, he could do it but few if any of his colleagues could. I just don’t have the strength. Being 60 does not help.
