#83 The Watch Artistry of F.P. Journe
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2017
- F.P. Journe’s work is both unique and wonderful. His work and background, along with his devotion to Breguet, reflect a French touch to everything he does. But it is his dedication to perfection and understanding his craft make him an artist and his work, art.
Thanks Bill to familiarize us with F.P. Journe and his watchmaking. An artist at heart, which makes watches of beauty. The more we listen to you the more we admire him.
Keep up the good work,
John
He spent time in restoration, and it seems that all of the great watchmakers spent time doing the same thing, John. Take care, Bill
Great video. I’m not really a watch guy but I love everything that F.P. Journe represents.
Hi Treeman. You don't have to be a watch guy to appreciate craftsmanship. Take care, Bill
Just rewatched this one. Came up on auroplay after watching some F.P.Journe documentary. Cool to see an early episode; your current intro blows this one away. See you Saturday.
Hey Zzeuss, thanks. My 'new' introduction is a combination of music created at Abbey Road studios in London, and an animator in The Netherlands. See you Saturday! Take care, Bill
Many thanks very very informative and interesting vid sir wish you all the best
Hey Ali, you are quite welcome!! Kindest regards, Bill
Thank you for shedding light on the history of horology.
Hey NS, you're most welcome. One of the most important (and to me interesting) aspects of Swiss watch history occurred during the French Wars of Religion. Check out this one: ruclips.net/video/J6X0yu5wTes/видео.html Cheers, Bill
Mr Sanders, I enjoyed this very much, thank you. I just discovered your channel via a search, and realise that I now have the chance to browse through and watch some of your other videos. A real treat. It looks like you have some very interesting topics there. I've subscribed.
Hi Linden! Welcome to WatchArtSci. We have new videos every Friday and Sunday. Usually we have collection reviews on Sundays, but sometimes we don't because we haven't been sent any. (No... we don't charge for reviews ...) This Friday we're having our State of the Collection (SOTC) and that rounds up the mischief I've been in the last year! Kindest regards, Bill
Thanks for the wonderful history lesson. F.P. Journe is a special "old school" watchmaker. Receiving my first Journe next week. Keep the great content coming Bill.
Hey Jay thanks man! What FPJ are you getting? It's like getting your first Picasso! Kindest regards, Bill
You are right, Picasso level watch maker. I'm getting the Chronometre Bleu. Your Chronometre a Resonance is perfect form and function.
I love the Chronomètre Bleu! When I could not find a Chronomètre Bleu I got the platinum Chronomètre Souverain instead, and once it's back from FPJ Service, it will probably get more wear-time than my Chronomètre à Résonance. Made of tantalum the Bleu, is identical to my Souverain except for the reserve indicator. The double barrels in both watches are to provide constant force and not added reserve, which to me is a perfection in mechanical time-keeping. Kindest regards, Bill
why did your FP need a service, Bill?
Excellent. Thanks!
Blake, the pleasure is all mine! Thanks man. Take care, Bill
I love these type watches such as Journe, Breguet, Daniels, Smith, so classic, elegant, fascinating complications, innovations, but I do not see myself buying due to price and my proclivity to sport watches. I love learning about this level of true horology.
Hey Ryvr! FP. Journe's history is especially interesting because he is such a dedicated artists to his horological craft. Kindest regards, Bill
WatchArtSci Much to admire Journe and his skills.
You'll get no argument from me!
Great video. Thank you.
Love those F.P. Journes, Los Font, but for activities ... it's gotta be the G-Shock. Which FPJ do you like? Take care and be safe, Bill😷
@@watchartsci I love the Chronometre Souverain in platinum. Can't stop looking at it. Also love learning about George Daniels, Roger W. Smith, FP Journe and Abraham L. Breguet. Just amazing..
@@losfont5674 Chronometre Souverain in platinum is a perfect choice. With a cognac strap, it looks amazing. If you know an FPJ AD, check with them about the $37,600 for a new one; but I don't know if they tacked a premium on that or not.) The pre-owned prices don't seem to be much better.... I got mine used; then sent it in to be serviced/overhauled in the FPJ Service Center in Miami, and it's like new. Take care and be safe, Bill😷
I agree. F.P.Journe watches can be perfectly considered pieces of art. By the way, what a beautiful F.P.Journe watch you have, Sir! Thank you for sharing.
Hi Enrique Doc! There are a few watchmakers alive today whose watches are works of art. In addition to F.P. Journe, I would include Kari Voutilainen, Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, Philippe Dufour, Richard Habring, Michael Parmigiani, and Roger Smith. We are fortunate to have these watchmakers among us. Kindest regards, Bill
I am glad to find out new interesting brands and of course having found this channel. Kind regards.
They are truly amazing watches, but unfortunately i won't be able to afford them. I think many of us would appreciate similar videos on MB&F, Urwerk or Greubel Forsey. Keep up the good work!
Hey Alex, thanks man! I've been trying to find some FP Journes under $10k, but other than some Elegantes (quartz by FPJ) nothing much. Finding some under $20k is a challenge. Kindest regards, Bill
Bill, this is my favorite video on your channel. Could you do an updated FPJ video of his current catalogue now that a few years have passed since this video? Thanks!
How's this a004? ruclips.net/video/K7XVxVlZMs4/видео.html Let me know, Bill
@@watchartsci that's my second favorite video on your channel haha. No worries, whenever you think it's appropriate but just want to let you know these deep dive FPJ videos are so so valuable and very much appreciated by your viewers!
Bill, it’s time for an updated video on FP Journe.
@@bekind1784 yes!
@@bekind1784 Okay ... next week.
Always an inspring watch brand to me though i dont see myself owning one of them. Have a good weekend Bill.
Hey Willie, you never know. I never thought I'd own an Agenhor, but I found that my Harry Winston had a bi-retrograde module by Agenhor. If you're up for some watch detective work, you may be able to find a watch with an FP Journe movement that is affordable. In his auto-chronology, FP Journe mentions that in 1996 that he... "Creates TIM SA in Geneva, devoted to developing exclusive calibres at the the service various brands." Apparently, FPJ did create a number of movements, but I have not yet found out which watches or for which watch companies. If we could find out who Journe via TIM SA made watches for (and kept our mouths shut until we had one) maybe we could find some real buys! I'm lookin'! Cheers, Bill
Give me a hint for that , could you? :)
1996- TIM SA created movements for Cartier, Breguet, Piaget, Corum, Asprey, the British Masters, and Harry Winston.
Thanks Bill..
Thanks for the inspiring video Bill!
Really well researched and done.
Just one small suggestion for a future edition about Journe would be the inclusion of the T30 series.
Realize it's not a watch family but it's the model that better connects FP to its origins.
Now your analogy about horology with arts was spot on.
There is something on certainly watchmakers, brands and event models that elevates them to classic/reference level.
Journe and most his timepieces exemplifies it very well.
All the best,
Amintas
Hi Amintas! Thanks for being inspired! As for the T10 and T30 series...there were so few that I decided to pass this time around. In fact I passed on several important models that will have to be covered in a later video. I saw the Toubillon Souverain Bleu at the NYC Boutique and it looked more more noir than bleu! What a watch, though! I'm going to have to go back and add a number of videos on some of the individual watches and groups (and subgroups) of watches by FP Journe. I'll add the T30 and T10 to that list. Kindest regards, Bill
Sounds like a plan Bill!
Take care,
Amintas
Found your channel last week and I'm really enjoying them. Maybe a little high brow for this country boy but thank you. I have a few pocket watches from my grandfathers and love the art and history behind watch making. Got me thinking about buying a few better wrist watches.
Leigh, you may not like my ranting if you decide to take up collecting watches from the ranks of the haute horlogerie. It's a disease that sends you looking after watches that you never knew (or cared) about finding beauty and mystery in the mechanics that have long been surpassed in this digital age! Kindest regards, Bill
I'm a retired school administrator. I don't think your rantings will bother me much. Pretty much every parent that ever talked to me were much smarter than me. So please rant on.
Did a bit of administration myself as an associate dean, graduate school dean and assistant provost, but for the most part a professor and researcher. Watches have become an endless source entertainment in retirement. This is one of my favorites: ruclips.net/video/J6X0yu5wTes/видео.html Cheers, Bill
Excellent Doc B. I though I detected a researcher. George R. R. Martin used the wedding in his books man! Most of us in the US have family histories that trace back to one side or other of these religious disagreements. You should put together a horological trip to Switzerland and Germany. If you do I'm in. When you combine art, science, and history it doesn't get any better.
The history of watches is fun and even more fun is the history that the watch companies "construct." Cheers, Bill
Really interesting video. I've learnt something today.
Hey Larry, thanks man! Kindest regards, Bill
An interesting little history.
I so far have 3 FP Journe's on my one-day-wishlist.
I'll start with the Chronometre Bleu!
Hey Malthus...the Bleu is the watch most want initially. Cool watch. If you plan to get one new, you'll have to wait a couple of years; so if you order one now, by the time you've save enough to buy it, it should be ready. An alternative, if I may suggest, is to get a pre-owned rose gold or platinum Chronometre Souvrain. They cost more than a Bleu initially, but the Blues go up in price by about $10k...so if you're going to get a Bleu...might as well get a new one. The platinum Chronomètre Souverain is about $30k initially but you can pick one up used for around $24-25k used, and about $3-4k less for the rose gold one. Also, the Chronomètre Souverain have the power reserve indicators but the Bleu does not. I have the Chronomètre Souverain in platinum, and it's gone up in price since I got by about $5k. They're all wonderful watches, though, go can't go wrong. Cheers, Bill
Have you ever considered starting an online Horolical History website or school of sorts. You videos are excellent and I really appreciate them. Journe is a fascinating brand. I would love that Elegante 38. Thanks ✌
Hey Captain Zed, that sounds like fun, but it would be a lot of work! What I'm going to do....soon...is to start taking a course on watchmaking. Then, when I talk about watches, at least I'll know how to put a watch together and take it apart. Then the models I make out of Popcicle Sticks and cardboard will be more accurate. That Elegante 38 is some watch, and they tend to be the most affordable of all of FPJ watches! Kindest regards, Bill
WatchArtSci I have.become extremely intrigued by FP Journe and has me rethinking my entire watch collecting purpose. I have acquired some Rolex and other nice brands but now considering to move away Rolex and into Journe. What do you think of the Elegante 48?
The Elegante 48 is probably the best priced and one of the most interesting in the FP Journe collection. They are a quartz watch with the movement designed by FPJ, and they go to sleep and wake when not in use. If you don't like the idea of quartz, then the watch I like best is the Chronomètre Souverain . (Winner of the GPHG Men's Prize in 2005). They're not as popular as the Chronomètre Bleu in tantium but I think they're a better watch because they have a power reserve indicator and in precious metal. The Linesport in titanium would be my next choice, but not aluminum (made for runners). The Elegante 48, though, is an interesting watch. Kindest regards, Bill
FP Journe time pieces are a work of art. I own probably around 25 swiss watches, and wear a different one pretty much every day. I've been researching this brand and the watch maker a lot recently and your information has been quite helpful.
Thanks Cap'n H00k! I have 2 FP Journes, and they are wonderful watches. Here's a video I did more recently on FPJs: ruclips.net/video/lF6vzZFmYE4/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/Lb09qtng390/видео.html I appreciate your feedback! Kindest regards, Bill
When you said "Asprey of London" that got my attention. Check out some of the videos about Asprey, amazing place.
Ok Ryvr, will do. Is that where you shop for watches in London? Next time I'm there, I'll check it out. Cheers, Bill
@@watchartsci no never been to the U.K., would love to go just seen some videos.
I love mechanical watches but that Elegante 48 is something else. I may even choose it as my 1st high horology if it's counted as one. But getting the watch will be a long journey to me though, long but interesting. Happy new year sir!
The Elegante 48 is all FP Journe - including the quartz movement. The unique aspect of the watch is that it turns off the battery drain when the watch is inactive and then jumps ahead to whatever the correct time is when the user puts it back on and starts moving. Good luck with that unusual watch. Kindest regards, Bill
Thank you sir! That fact that it is unusual and understated (compare to a Rolex for example) makes me feel more interested. I love it when people look at it and may think that it is some cheap Chinese watch, it will make the watch collecting game more fun.
Those who know watches would wholly respect it! Those who don't appreciate watches have much to learn.... Cheers, Bill
So glad finding someone with knowledge and who can impart it with grace, that said I've often speculated on owning an FP Journe watch, in particular the Elegante Quartz, or the Rolex Hulk 116610lv ceramic bezel mechcanical movement, what would Bill Sander's choose? Is the FP Journe quartz considered high horology? Who can enjoy a Rolex 3135 superb movement hidden from one's eyes?, truth be told high horology does sell thru exhibitionism, paying for the Rolex I won't get to enjoy the movement where with the Elegante I can almost pretend I'm playing Tron.
Hey Jim, thanks for the kind words. Between the Elegante & Hulk, I'd probably go for the Hulk because I like green and I don't have a Rolex. However, given my full options I'd get a FP Journe Chronométre Optimum because it has a remontoir d'égalité . As for exhibition windows....do you think that as the price of gold went to the stratosphere that it was cheaper to make the watch backs out of synthetic sapphire glass than gold? Kindest regards, Bill
Good point on gold but I've never been a fan of precious metals, steel & titanium is where it's at for me, I'll go along with a tungsten micro rotor just to keep it the darn thing wound, then again my wife the jokester suggested a quartz because at my age setting around watching TV with a beer in hand won't wind my self-winders.
The main point though is exhibition windows, IMO, really brought the watch enthusiast back to the fold, just looking at the front of a women isn't as much fun as also getting to look at the back!, then we have the skeletonized versions, (don't get me started, I've gone thru the Twiggy area), I love a little meat with my potatoes :))
No I don't think the price of gold is much of a factor, the ability of seeing art in a form that can be strapped to one's wrist is a really great feeling, I'm sure your bloggers will agree!
Good point Jim. Yes, the exhibition windows are great for the collector who can check out the movement. Like you, not a skeleton fan with only a few exceptions. Kindest regards, Bill
Thanks for the great information about a truly remarkable watchmaker. I"m not a fan of the different sized numerals. Maybe I"m crazy, but I would prefer a numeral to be cut off partially (or entirely) as opposed to the size changing. Still love his other designs though.
Hi Jay, when I first noticed the 7 and 8 next to the small seconds on my FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain, I didn't know what to think. I've come to really like the asymmetry they bring to the watch. Every other watch either either removes the numbers or cuts them off, but I really like FP Journe's solution to knock the traditional on its ear. But I can understand why some may be off put by it. Kindest regards, Bill
Great content, Bill. Hoping to get a Chronometre Souverain someday. Could you tell me where you got the wall clock?
Hi Stephen, the CS is a gem, and I wear mine a lot. As for the wall clock, it was a gift from a friend...it just happened to match my CS. Take care, Bill
Bill you have made me order a F P Journe watch.
Hey Hero, which one are you thinking about getting? Good hunting! Bill
@@watchartsci Bill, I really like the Octa Divine and also because my budget only reaches this. If my budget can stretch further I would get the Resonance. I am also think of getting the Elegante 48 as one for daily wear and because of the technology behind it.
@@watchartsci BTW your Channel is great and I learnt a lot from you especially on F P Journe. I really like how you go into the history and life of the watch maker and into the reasons behind the pieces. Very detailed and interesting.
@@greaterbayareahero1401 Thanks Hero! I've been very temped by the Elegante 48 as well-the entire design is all FPJ ... however, there are so many other watches ... Take care, Bill
WatchArtSci The reason I like the Elegante is the amount of time he spent researching the technology part and it’s so cool on the battery time. But as you said there are so many choices. If you had to buy a single F.P. Journe watch with a budget of 30k GBP which one would you buy? I have been struggling with this for ages.
Can you cover the brand new Omega Seamaster 300 Professional, with the ceramic wave-patterned dial? I'm also a huge fan of the 8800 co-axial, in-house movement now used in the Seamaster.
Hi Shipmate! What would you like covered? Kindest regards, Bill
@@watchartsci just your overall thoughts like you usually do when discussing a watch.
Ok, I'll put that in the hopper, but I can tell you right now, I like the Seamaster a lot...but I'll try and provide something more balanced and objective. Cheers, Bill
I shall be a good boy and build lots of good karma and the universe will send me a journe and a lange
Ever since I've found that no good deed goes unpunished I'm dubious when it comes to karma; but that doesn't mean something great won't happen to you and you'll be looking at an F.P. Journe on your wrist! Cheers, Bill
Hey Bill. Great video. Though you skipped one of FPJ's seminal innovations in case and dial making: the CB.
Hey Tim, thanks man! I am truly sorry about skipping the CB. I went tumbling through the GPHG winners after the introduction and left out some of the most important pieces. (Jaber said the same thing.) I was trying to cram too much in too little time. This gives me an opportunity to make it up (and spend more time talking about FPJ!). Maybe I'll take a slow stroll through the CB and CS models and do the same for the rest of the Souvrains and then the Octas. How does that sound? Kindest regards, Bill
WatchArtSci Always happy for more videos!
...of course you'll have to send me your CB...just so that I can get it right! Cheers, Bill
WatchArtSci I think we could arrange a meet up in NYC. Also have the Octa Reserve if you want a closer look.
Are you going to the WatchTime show in October? If not, I could try to make it on some Saturday and Dennis and Ryan might be in town...or I could drop by and see Michelle and William...Cheers, Bill
Hi Bill. Love you videos and I'd like to ask you how accurate your F.P Journe watches are? I'm crazy about accuracy in watches.
Hi Slawek, I just checked my FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain and got the following results at a lift angle of 52°:
-3.7 sec/day
Beat error 0.1ms
amp. 354°
21,600 bph (3Hz)
That's nowhere near what I can get with my Mickey Mouse quartz, though! Actually, they're quite good, but if you want accuracy, get a Grand Seiko Hi-Beat or the 10Hz Breguet. I'm after craftsmanship and overall quality, part of which is accuracy. Cheers, Bill
Why all these small companies try to compete only in the area of super expensive and hyper complicated wrist watches. They probably want to make a name for themselves in the mechanical watchmaking. In the end of the day, these watches are purely a piece of jewelry. I saw today a boutique on the airport with some of those watches which costs a fortune to buy. To be honest, most of them look ugly and have little practical use. On the other hand, it's a nice topic to see you analyze in your videos.
Hey Frantisek, thanks. Yeah, we are in a nutty area for a hobby. It's expensive and complex and really doesn't make much practical sense. Maybe that's why we do it. Kindest regards, Bill
The Elegante is hot.
You'd love an Elegante! They're quartz, nearly hand-made by F.P. Journe and automatically turn down the battery drain when not worn.
"Professor", a very nice video but my only comment is that you rush the subject like someone is after you. Take your time, contemplate part 1,2, etc. until the subject is given its worth of time. You missed many F.P. Journe models 7 at least few of which are Significant models. This video is long overdue, I will consider this as an introduction. Do not rush, we enjoy your company. Thanks
Hey Jaber, you're absolutely right. I missed a lot of the significant models and innovations. I wanted to keep it under 20 minutes and I probably should have broken it down better instead of doing exactly what you describe; too much all at once. Well, I never tire of speaking of FP Journe's work; so I'll cook up more in the future. Kindest regards, Bill
