    I was working as a local stagehand for Hellfest (France) 2016 on Mainstage 02 where Korn was headlining on one day, and i was trying to observe and learn and geek out from what i was seeing in front of me : how the bands' techs worked, etc.
    I remember Abel and Ray being super nice (IIRR i got to see the show from sidestage and be real close to the drums) and thinking to myself how glad and lucky i was to be here.
    Also : amazing chat here, and amazing story Abel has. Working as a tech (TM, stagehand, FOH, carpenter, ...) but being late to the game and sometimes very green for some gigs but also very passionate and always trying to do my best, I relate to so many things Abel said here !

    Don't know Abel personnaly, but all I can say is (and of course it involves FOH etc as well) : Charlie's drums sound awesome on that gig !!!! (and so did Ray's drums in Korn!).
    P.S : Mike Deleon is rippin' on I'm Broken by the way ! Very spot-on on the solo !
    Cool and interesting interview Bobby ! I'm always intrigued by crew members back stories and how they ends up there !

    I have more respect for Abel now then before. He stood up. Against a toxic environment. I had to deal with a band. Here in KC. When I was working at a small venue. I was helping out. Stage hand. And pretty much the singer was the one talking stuff to me and my friend. I just got time of him. I just told the rest of the band let's handle it this. After the show. We had a talk about it. Nothing ever happened. But i told my boss don't booked these guys. Again after the show

    Do you guys have any advice? I want to go on the road. I really don't know anything about tech stuff. But I usually help loading and back line sometimes. I'm 43 years old. I started stage hand about 8 years ago. I have met so many bands. I recently started hanging out after shows meeting crew members at bigger shows. That's how I met Abel here in KC in 2022. Also met a few others. I have also did a few shows out of town. Helping my pals in soulfly and cavaliera bros.

    • @BobbyLandgraf
      @BobbyLandgraf  29 дней назад +2

      If you want it it's out there. You have to go get it because it usually doesn't come looking. Talk to folks that have the gigs you want and offer to shadow them and learn from them. That can turn in to you getting a call to fill in for said person and the doors are open.!!!

      @@BobbyLandgraf last year I helped a band for a few shows. Soulfly and cavaliera bros. That's how I met Mike DeLeon. Through soulfly crew. I already had met them. Here in KC. In 2017. I talked to a few of my friends. From static x and sevendust crew. Last year..I'll be going on the Lamb of God cruise. I hope to see stage stuff.

      - Learn as much as you can on your own, from home (watch vlogs, read books, forum posts, listen to podcasts, etc), at shows (as an audience member or when you're working there), etc
      - Be nice and stay professional (don't fanboy too much, stay in your place)
      - Ask questions, put the word out there, while being honest about where you're at (your message above is exactly that) and offer to help (small responsabilities for bigger stuff, bigger responsabilities for small stuff (like small local bands, small local venues)
      - Be willing to take many different type of gigs (tour and/or local venue or fest or production company, purely non technical or technical, driver, tour manager, guitar/drum tech, stagehand, carpenter, etc), as long as you feel like you're up to it and your employer knows your skills level and is ok with it. You will learn from all of them, get to meet people, network, and this is how you'll get better and get more opportunities, and then get even better and get more opportunities.
      - Be patient, it can take time
      You're 43 but if you're passionate and have the right mindset and work hard you'll get there.
      Speaking from a 39 y.o who took the plunge 8 years ago and never looked back, and still learning and getting better and not where i wanna be (yet) but getting there slowly but surely.

      @@djabthrash thanks for the advice. I'm welling to learn stuff. When I started I was a fanboy. Some what. But as I got more into it. Helping bands. I just was like the bands are regular people. A few of my friends are in bands and work as techs. Tour mangers etc. Working shows has open doors. For me at shows. I was actually reached out from a friend. He had a gig. For merch person. I had to turn it down. They wanted an experience person. I didn't have any experience at it. I have offered bands help. Nothing yet. But I did ask a few of my friends. About what to do. They told me same thing you mentioned. Ask questions watch them. Witch I have been doing. I've been going out of town. To see if I can help. I've gotten lucky to help my idols. Last year I got contacted with a vocalist and now some what friend. He tried helping with some advice. Big thanks for every one on here reaching out. Safe travels. Hopefully I'll see you at a show
