European Gen-x here. I worked in Spain for a few years at the end of the '90s, beginning of the 2000s. The Hispanic-South-American community was extremely present over there at that time and after a few months living and working there - thanks to the systematic parties on Fridays and Saturdays where everyone brought a few friends and which took place then everywhere, including in the house I shared with 5 Hispanic people - I quickly learned to distinguish different Hispanic backgrounds in people based on...exactly what he describes. I then worked in Asia and, believe it or not, but there are also considerable differences between different Asian people, even though we communicated in English, it was clearly noticeable. I find it fascinating, in fact, even if I am systems/tools/ideas oriented - I work in aeronautics - and not people/communication oriented - I suck with humans - I find that it is an aspect of our species which is extraordinary, which is nuanced, rich and somehow interresting. There is an excellent book that I came across years ago written by a linguist, but also Evopsy and cognitivist, which somehow put languages, cultures and evolution into perspective and it was extremely interesting: "The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language (1994), by Steven Pinker. Mindblowing.
