    I'm sorry. But you can sure tell how the quality of sound has fallen from the quartets from 8+ years ago to now. Ringmasters, Musical Island Boys, Instant Classic, Forefront, don't have the depth, maturity or blend like the quartets of old. The exceptions would be Masterpiece and Main Street because they have veteran singers from that era that have won gold medals before. The difference in sound from the Ringmasters to Vocal Spectrum just in this clip was like night and day. No contest. The quartets from 2000-2009 for the most part can't be beat.

    • @chaseprecopia5643
      @chaseprecopia5643 7 лет назад +22

      I disagree. The tone may have changed over the years as the barbershop style itself has evolved and moved towards more and more complex and eccentric arrangements, but the quality has certainly not fallen. These are the greatest singers in our society, but if they all sound exactly the same and don't innovate then the art form will die.

    • @guibox3
      @guibox3 7 лет назад +1

      And I disagree with you. I'm not saying there isn't 'quality'. For sure these are talented singers. My point is that the SOUND and BLEND is just not as good. The more complex, jazzy arrangements there are, the less the opportunity is to blend. The barbershop style was designed for that blend due to it's standard arrangements. As for 'not evolving or die', I definitely disagree. Evolving doesn't mean 'changing drastically'. You can be innovative but still retain that style. Bluegrass Student Union were examples of that. Look at bluegrass music. It hasn't changed in 75 years and it is strong and popular as ever. AC/DC and Johnny Cash are musical examples of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

    • @xradphotographer
      @xradphotographer 7 лет назад +17

      Ultimately, I think it comes down to personal preference. I love many quartets spanning from the early origins of the Society, all the way to present day. Some of my favorite quartets hail from the 90s and 2000s because that’s what I grew up listening too. For example, Platinum (2000 Champs). I think they have an insanely refined sound and blend.
      However...
      So does/did: Ringmasters (2012 Champs), Second Edition (1989 Champs), Bluegrass Student Union (1978 Champs), and The Mark IV (1969 Champs). All of these groups have very different arrangements and stylings, and come from very different times in the Societies history. But, all of them sound amazing! To say that the quality has fallen, I think, is unfair. The quality is there, it is just packaged a little differently.
      Every generation revolutionizes the genre, by building on each generation that came before. That is one reason I love this genre and style of singing so darn much! I can listen to quartets from each decade in the Societies history, and love what I hear. Each decade has something different to offer, yet they all have that signature, unmistakable, clearly obvious, and absolutely intoxicating Barbershop sound and style.

    • @guibox3
      @guibox3 7 лет назад +3

      @ Codeman644 Well put, sir and you make some great valid points. It is a matter of preference I agree. I do appreciate the sound of Instant Classic but none of these quartets match the blend of Platinum, Keepsake and Acoustix or have that blend along with the technical and innovative style like Realtime, Max Q, and Vocal Spectrum. However, they are talented and they do sound great on their own merit.

    • @Randomstuff552
      @Randomstuff552 7 лет назад +10

      @guibox3 Ringmasters is one of my favorite quartets. But I wont pretend that I did not hear the difference in the fullness of the sound. I agree that the difference was as clear as night and day. But I also disagree, all of the quartets had a well rounded blended sound, yet for some reason Ringmasters sounded thin in comparison. And although you did point out the obvious difference, they are missing their bass which I believe is one of the most essential parts of a quartet. So if you would point out another 2 quartets to compare the differences in blend, maybe then you can "prove" your theory.
