Great to see the olight included. I rank it as one of the best purchases I've made under $100. You don't need to cycle into high before going into turbo. Just double tap the power button and you're in turbo from any setting, including off. Triple tap for strobe. Long depress for "moonlight" which is honestly the most useful one when even my phone light would disturb someone and I still need to see something.

The 1 and 15 lumen mode is great for close up technical work and the other modes are perfect for everything else. Best feature is the memory so it stays on the mode used last. My primary lights are Streamlight Pro-Tac 1L and 2L. At 275 and 350 rated lumen respectively, they are plenty bright for my use.
Both use CR-123 but using Tenergy L-Ion rechargeables I haven't purchased a battery in over 5 years. Yes, I know the trend is for USB charging but I prefer to reach into my bag and swap cells rather than losing access to the light while it is tethered to a charger.
I also have a couple of cheap 'AAA' COB lights that work well when I need to stuff a light into a small space or 'loan' someone a light. They only do a couple hundred lumens but at less than $10 I don't care if they get destroyed or not returned.

I’ve spent an absolute fortune on lights, specifically headlamps. And after all the brands and fancy ones I’ve tried over the last 10 years… I actually love the Nebo rebel that I’ve been using the past few years. I have three of them, and I use them every day, draining at least two of them completely.
And on the lower setting… It’s still super bright but can last up to 8-10 hours! They’re super cheap, The rebel only cost about $30.
and are built to a high standard just like my olights and others. I’m somewhat qualified to review these lights properly. I run a lab where I do component level board repairs for industrial clients, as well as test equipment calibration & metrology. I also work with a wide range of photonics test equipment. Like spectrometers and stuff like that. So I’m somewhat qualified to make these assessments.
I’ve disassembled all the lights I purchased, and I’m still impressed with the Nebo rebel. Build quality and attention to detail is top notch.

I love seeing how these lights actually do. My wife got me that first one branded as wow lite and it’s decent but I usually grab one that fits in my pocket better or a full size light. I’ve also had a couple different astro knock offs. I like them except the tightening collars crack pretty easy. The coast hp3 pen light and the 590 lumen red 4 aaa light work excellent but eat batteries. The harbor freight braun light and quantum rechargeable pen light are probably my favorite and very reasonably priced. I threw out my streamlight stylus because I got tired of the button wearing out every couple weeks

Nitecore and Led Lenser are a must to check out. I use a Nitecore MT21C at work since the swivel head comes in handy a lot and I can hang it off my shirt. Seems like a great light and I've never had any issues with it, as well as the MT06MD as a pupil light

I have an Olight that has the 90 degree head and a magnet on the bottom. It also has a head band. For fixing stuff, it work great, and is similar to the one you tested. The diffuser lens works the best if you're working on something. I've found most mechanical work needs around 100-150 lumens. Otherwise the light creates too much glare.

Ya know I'd really love to see some sort of test that evaluates the quality of the light too. Most of the time when I need a flashlight I am really just looking for more consistent illumination of a work area. Perhaps the quality could be evaluated by shining each source on a white background and then leaving it up to the viewer for they're own subjective takeaway.

    • @gorak9000
      @gorak9000 3 года назад

You don't have to rely on "shinning each source on a white background and then leaving it up to the viewer". You can get a used spectrophotometer (basically a spectrometer) used for color calibrating monitors / projectors / printers / printing presses for a few hundred dollars, and measure lights. You can easily measure CRI (which itself is kindof a useless measurement that's easy to cheat on), or the better but less widely known TM-30 spec. Ever wonder why the "high CRI" LED bulbs at the hardware store still look terrible? The spectrophotometer can show you why! CRI is based on the amount of light output at 8 rather pastel (unsaturated) colors compared to blackbody radiation, known as R1-R8, but it doesn't take into account more saturated colors and skin tones, which are in color swatches R9-R15. A lot of "high CRI" bulbs are missing a lot of saturated red color, and also sometimes saturated blue, which is why in places where people dig into these things, you always see "CRI + R9 (saturated red) + R11 (saturated green) and R12 (saturated blue)" figures given. The TM-30 spec is based on 100 different colors, so a lot harder to "cheat" on.

@@gorak9000 Sorry about the late response, I sorta meant more or less to just show the pattern of light rather than the light's color rendering abilities. It might show if there were fringes around the edge of a headlamp's field of view or waviness from a COB array without proper diffusion. But a color accuracy test would also be pretty cool, if just a bit more expensive.

This is great. Hope one day you can share some data on the big name (*streamlight*, olight, surefire, cloud defensive, etc.) weapon mountable lights for both long guns and hand guns. There are so many models with subtle differences that it gets overwhelming when comparing specs. I really don't want to pay the hefty prices attached for a weapon light that isn't as good as the company says it is. Anyway, thanks for the quality content (a rarity in its own right).

When I first got it I used it every night and, winter time, most mornings to walk my dogs, my wife also used it, and when I had to replace the batteries (10 months after getting it) I found the original lenser batteries in it! I had assumed my wife had been replacing them but no.

Would LOVE to see these tests on work lights and/or harbor freight lights. I use harbor freight “Braun” work lights in my barn and for the price I’d say they’re damn bright; but I’ll readily admit that I bought them because they’re cheap LED work lights that don’t get nearly as hot as halogen and I never considered any other options. I’m totally satisfied with them for what I paid but curious as to how they compare to more legit more expensive options

Can you include stuff like Kelvin ratings and CRI. The specs you've included so far are all important but don't mean much if my eyes feel like they're about to fry out of my skull after 3 mins and i can't tell things apart cause the colors are so washed out. Laser eye surgery, blindness from burned up retinas, loss of sleep from blue light exposure; are all very expensive and detrimental over time so imo they're a cost that has to be included in things like this. I often still use an old inherited worklight from the 50s with a frosted incandescent bulb because it can go for hours without excessive strain on my eyes.
Not sure if you'll see this since the vid has been out a while. Maybe i'll comment on a newer one too so yall see it

The most obscene case of misleading, but honest ANSI FL1 ratings for a big brand flashligh I have seen: Produce rated output and immediatelly ramp down 90%! Majority of their products are optimized similary to perform just for a couple of minutes then idle hours and hours with just a fraction of rated output.

FYI, that charger you used for the Olight is a Power Delivery 3.0 (PD 3.0) protocol charger only (blame Google). Based on your video, the light appears to want a Quick Charge 2.0 (QC 2.0) protocol charger. They are related, but in this case incompatible, rapid charging protocols. I believe only QC3.0 or 4.0 is compatible with PD3.0 but not QC2.0. This is possibly why the charger only pulled
