Why Siachen Matters To India

  • NEW DELHI: India isn’t averse to demilitarization of the Siachen Glacier, given that Pakistan accepts the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) that divides the positions of the two countries, says Indian army chief General MM Naravane. India was forced to take countermeasures on the world’s highest battlefield after Pakistan unilaterally tried to change the status quo in 1984. ‘Operation Meghdoot’, which led to the capture of the glacier is the Indian Army’s longest uninterrupted operation. In this episode of ‘The Gist’, one of the heroes of that operation, Lt Gen Sanjay Kulkarni (Retd), talks about the strategic significance of the glacier where nearly 800 Indian soldiers have died on the line of duty due to the difficult terrain and harsh weather. He is in conversation with StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale.

    After listening this conversation, I feel it will be suicidal to vacate the Siachen. And Nitin sir, thank you for clarifying the fact that Pakistanis are nowhere near the Siachen. The so called Pakistani Siachen lies far below the actual Siachen glacier. If my memory serves me correctly, I think it's 170 - 200km away.

    Very informative session, with maps of the Siachen glacier area and an analysis by General Kulkarni. Absolutely vital position for India’s strategic interests, as explained. But it’s also important that India regain its territory that was illegitimately occupied by the two conniving neighbours.
    It seems apparent that if India had the foresight years ago, to firmly hold on to its territories in the northern areas, including Shaksgam and the Karakoram, it could have had a clear advantage.
    One is reminded of the tale about the camel and its owner, as it goes. From just wanting a crack in the tent to warm its nose, the camel eventually occupied the whole tent!
    The obvious moral is that one should be ever vigilant in a situation, even if things appear non threatening in the beginning.
    India needs to constantly outmaneuver the two conniving and perfidious neighbours.

    Thanks Nitin for having Lt Gen Kulkarni to explain about importance of Siachin. I think Gen. Naravane, like his predecessor, tends to talk unnecessarily and beyond his remit. On Siachin, he could have skirted the question easily. Even on China, he is talking unnecessarily. We are doing quite fine in defending ourselves and we are upgrading our infrastructure. There is total political commitment about it.

Chinese PLA have been assessing the Cost and whether it is worth to waive that 60 billion and build the dam and the railway line. Pakistan will flip overnight if we pay $70 billion and takeover G and B.

    Sachin is part of Pakistan, but India took over due to non presence of Pakistan army . Offer to demilitarized is not a desire to peace. It's due to the road Pakistan and China building which will cutt off Indian supply line to Siachin glashir . Truth is India and Pakistan are enemy and will keep harming each other within their capacity. Pakistan being smaller in size and economy is just defending and trying to respond within it's resources, while India is attacking as per his large size, economy and resources, Blaming each other is just to divert attention of public and to gain political mileage. India successfully played in Bangladesh creations, and trying to play on the same footage in Pak. Balochistan, India wishes to dictate it's neighborhood, Pakistan is a big hindrance ,it's a war, let's accept it. A LAST WAR . Distraction of this region is written, India's will be ruined, the signs are appearing in the form of Hindu, Muslim,Siky, Christian, Dallot, Naga land, etc uprising and mistrust amongst different communities.

    • @MaTara01
      @MaTara01 2 года назад +1

      There is no offer on the table for Pakistan at all from the Indian side, no matter what any Army chief says. The decision rests with the government of India. And the records of the government of India shows that the erstwhile kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh, signed the UN recognised Treaty of Accession in 1947 and joined India. Like the other princely states of India, Jammu and Kashmir was given only 2 choices by the British government in 1947, either join India or join Pakistan. No ifs, no buts. Therefore, Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable part of India legally and morally.

    What India did to Pakistan in 1984, claimed and occupied inhabitable heights, China is doing in Ladakh today, what goes around it comes around. I am sure Pakistanis will maintain their position for the next 35 years as they have done in the past 35 years. It is India's choice to change its course; if you change 370 and 35A and start building infrastructure in Ladakh, the Chinese will come and give you a hard time. The more significant problem is not India's lack of vision or ambition. It is about the Indian mindset; almost 5500kms border with two neighbours, China and Pakistan, are disputed. If India wants to play a bully, it will receive the response in the same coin. Cooperation among neighbours can bring prosperity and stability in the region; a jingoistic approach would bring body bags and poverty to its people; the choice is yours, the Indian politicians.
