When you say you blocked the Leela Sweater at many different stages, do you mean that you frequently cut off your yarn to do so, and leave yourself with all the loose ends to weave i ? Or is there some magical way to block working yarn without getting your whole cake yarn wet ? (or did you maybe wait until you were finished with a yarn ball ?
That is a great question! Waiting until the end of a skein is the easiest way, yes! But most of the time while my garment is still attached to a skein/ball of yarn, I give myself enough of a tail between my garment and my skein (not cutting the yarn), and set the skein to the side next to the tub that I am soaking my garment in. So a tiny bit of extra yarn gets wet but not the rest of the skein. I hope that helps!:)
