Expat here as well. You nailed it. All of it. I don’t mind tipping at all if I receive a service. More times than not the parking guys help me find a spot and assist me in getting in that spot. I really appreciate that in crowded, tight areas. However, we have this one man in town (Sosua) that is a problem sometimes. Recently I parked my ATV at the bar that I intended to end up at early. The man wasn’t working yet. I came back a few hours later and he had moved my ATV so he could park a car in that spot. I let him know that I didn’t really like that, as you don’t touch another man’s bike, but let it go and told him it was cool because I knew him. I always take care of him when he actually helps me, which has been several times. I frequent this establishment regularly. So, a few hours later I come out to get on my ATV and this guy wants a propina. I got a little heated on that one. I still love it here though.

I gave a guy 25 pesos “.50 cents” once as I was leaving the parking lot because of my better half, but other than that I never pay at free parking but I’m never rude to them or act ugly towards them, for the most part.

When these guys come up to you to help you park, they are hustlers. I wouldn't pay to park in a free parking spot.
