Kavita Krishnamurti also sang for Dil Se.. (Director - Mani Ratnam, Starring - Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha
Koirala, Priety Zinta & Malaika Arora) and Pukar (Director - Rajkumar Santoshi, Starring -
Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Namrata Shirodhkar, Danny & Om Puri)
Rangeela (Pyaar Ye Jaane Kaisa Hai) used Kavita Krishnamurti's classical chords;
Dil Se.. had her rendering the poetry of Mirza Ghalib. (Satrangi Re). It was unusual and unique.
In Pukar (Key Sera Sera, Picturised on Prabhu Deva & Madhuri Dixit) she was outright funky.
Later she went on to sing for another legend Ilaiyaraaja.

Whatte delightful episode with Kavita ji ! She rolling up her sleeves to battle it out a Rahman composition was most entertaining. And she is right, ARR does sometimes sings in Z scale ! That was LOL ! But most important was her stating that the artist / singer should always be on his/her toes to handle a difficult composition. And Kavita ji, FYI, current tally of ARR compositions language wise is Tamizh-630 / Hindi-655 / Telugu-495 / Kannada-Malayalam-Marathi-50 / English and Non Film-600 ! ( includes dubbed songs and own instrumentals). 🙂

In 'Mangal Pandey' Kavita Krishnamurthy sang the song 'Mein Vari Vari'. It is a typical mujra song of a periodic film. Obviously it is based on raga. Plenty of classical instruments are being played, like: Sarengi, Santoor, Tabla. But when I first listened to it I was blown away by the bassline. How can someone think about putting distinctive bass hook on a mujra song! That hook is there throughout the whole song but no-one questions: how can an electric instrument be infused to a song set up in British period? That's how ARR blends things. Fusion at it's best! ❤️

Surprised to know that for 'Satrangi re' song, Kavitaji sang & Mr Rahman presented it in a unique way. Only ARR could do this.
I think apart from his own music going to the next benchmark level in this album, he presented three voices very differently than their usual styles. One is Lata ji, then Kavitaji and last but not least, Sukhwinder in Chaiya chaiya which made him a huge star 🌟 overnight!

Kavita ji sang some brilliant songs in Zubeida which is one of Rahman's most underrated works. Also from Lakeer there is a melodious duet with Shaan 'Paigham Laaya Saawan' which again is a rehash of Rahman's own 'Kaatre En Vaasal' from Rythm.
We can't call it underrated, people don't get it, it's beyond their experience, that's it.
@@srinunaikbanavat8077 Zubeida is a period film and so the music can't be modern. Even the melodies don't sound really sweet in this album which could somewhat scare someone who got used to expect that from Rahman. The melodies are both periodic and rustic sounding in a way but not that sweet or very soothing to the ears. Well, that's how he matched to Shyam Benegal's regular go-to music director Vanraj in his own way!
May I know abt the album 'Lakeer' details like actors or director so that I could recall it. I donno in which year it came also. Probably, this is one of those list of albums that Rahman made use of his unused Southern hits!

You missed the real queen of singers which is Alka Yagnik. She has the best of superhits with Rahman and most versatile and commercially successful singers.

She's one among the queens aforementioned and the other singers had far better rapport, respect and gave some of the best hits with ARR along with being the most recorded artistes with him compared to Alka if you bother to check the facts completely.

Wow what an interview again after so long and waiting for the next episode too, btw! But I felt after hearing Shekhar Kapur, here's the one again to whom we feel like listening a lot bcoz as much she's sweet as a person, she's also insightful about so many things and is saying things that we love to hear. I was expecting goosebumps about her comparison of ARR with Ilayaraja but she only drew similarities despite saying they are different from each other.
Also, even though it's just an aalaap and those words in Satrangi Re, she's equally or even more remembered than Sonu bcoz that's how powerful and haunting she sounds and I'm glad that none other than Rahman has extracted this unusual style from her which adds an other worldly feel to that song with just her one humming. She just fits and her voice sits so brilliantly in the song there!
But the best of all is how she's so joyfully and fondly recollects every memory with ARR. Her admiration and love for him and his work is so natural and is clearly seen through out. After all, he gave her some of his bestest songs to sing and she seems to be more than happy and thankful to him for that as one can see her in the entire interview.

As Mr. mani Ratnam too mentioned in our episode 3, that this character was such that one wasn't sure if it was a person or god. Kavitaji's humming represented that emotion. In fact the correct word would have been 'haunting', sometime while conducting an interview, a word or expression gets used which may not be wrong, but is not appropriate either. What a downgrade of Indian Play back singers right now. What an era gone by these legends.
With all due respect, the ignorance in some of these questions is just jaaring . By trying to frame the question by making an assumption(not factual based) that Rahman's best work is in Tamil just sounds very disrespectful to the work he's produced in Hindi films . Rangeela , Tamasha , Atrangi re , Rockstar , Jodhaa Akbar , Swades , Zubaidaa, Jab tak hai jaan , Ranjhanaa ,Mom , Highway , Lagaan , Rang de Basanti , Ghajini , Delhi 6 ...etc etc -Are these not "good enough" to feature in the list of his best works? Ofcourse he's produced incredible music in Tamil Films .But the way the questions have been framed in not just this episode but also the previous ones(a strange complaint that the interviewer had about rahman's use of synth which didn't make any sense) seem very unnecessary unless you can technically explain the flaws in it .Please do not use Subjective opinion and classify them as the general viewpoint .
