Back around 1950 or so I was a young teen lad who loved musicals. At a second run movie theater, I sat through the movie Showboat for three consecutive days. I thought that Howard Keel (as Gaylord Ravenal) and Kathryn Grayson portrayed a great love story. I also became aware of the awesome beauty Ava Gardner. All that love and beauty blew this boy's mind. Still love the movie and music at 84.
@@roypeaslee1305 I saw Howard Keel at Casa Mañana in Ft. Worth in the 70’s. I saw Showboat there too. I saw John Raitt in Pajama Game in 1960 in Kansas City. In person musicals are great.
It is the first movie I remember as a child. I'm pretty sure I didn't see it then because I didn't even know what a movie was but my daddy told me Showboat was coming. I remember seeing a house moved on North Roosevelt and asked my daddy if that was Showboat. Great musical with lots of great songs. William Warefield remains my all time favorite singing Old Man River.
I knew this song from Bing Crosby's sing along album--but only the chorus. Then I heard the full song from Showboat. But here the key changes before the chorus--which I like. I recently heard the original song as written and there is no key change.
What makes this moment so beautiful and poignant is really what the song is all about. It mirrors Magnolia's situation. "The Ball" can refers to her marriage to Gaylord and at this point their marriage is essentially over.
Thanks for posting this. I saw the film with my parents the year that it came out and listening to Kathryn hit that high note at the end still brings me out in goosebumps.
Miss Greyson ha dato il suo meglio in coppia con Mario Lanza! I loro duetti sono deliziosi ed irripetibili perché un partner come Lanza lei non lo ha più trovato!
I once unfairly commented that kathryn grayson sqeaked when she hit the high notes. I got her mixed up wth jeanette mcdonald, who definitely did shreik on the high notes. Ms grayson had a beutiful voice.
Carlo Zabbia my mom had a book about Joey Brown. He was very popular in the fifties but this was the only movie I've ever seen him in. He has such a jovial face!
@@rosemariekury9186 Have you never seen "some like it hot"? Normally seen as a Marilyn Monroe picture (which it is), Mr. Brown has a large part to play in it - and gets to deliver one of the most famous last lines in movies. Definitely worth a watch! (IMO, it's a good movie anyway.)
@@rosemariekury9186 Enjoy! It's of its time; and I think Mr.Brown doesn't appear 'till some way in. But worth the wait for the last line. (Don''t google.)
My favorite scene of the movie - father rescues daughter! Very touching. No, they don't make them like this anymore.

In 2015 I was a young teen lad who loved musicals. Would've given a lot then and still would to see show boat on the big screen.
This is a lovely story. Thank you for sharing, and I wish you only blessings going forward.

That song is so special to me
What a wonderful voice, heartbreaking, brilliant, what a film, absolutely wonderful. Xx
There will never be another kathryn grayson...she was a gorgeous lady with an amazing voice
My favourite movie ever was “Showboat”. After the Ball makes me cry every time I hear it. She has such a magnificent voice.

My favorite scene in this musical. What a tear jerker. They don't make these anymore!
But, when 'they' do 'they' change things. Look at how they ended My Fair Lady. Yuk.
@@tonydomenech7713 yes, you’re so right.

This scene hits me in the feels every time!❤
My favorite musical. Old Man River has been sung by many people and I think I have heard them all. Great music in Showboat.
Too bad he was a communist
Kathryn Grayson gave her greatest performance as Magnolia in this film, and Joe E Brown was perfect as Cap’n Andy!
What a voice!!!!!!
Nothing but the best.
Lovely & beautiful
This scene always brings a tear to my eye..
I fainted!
The Greatest musical of all time. Best msicology and well cast.
My favorite movie !
The sweetest and most touching scene in this delightful movie musical... ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks you for this lovely post! 🙏🍀
Jeannette MacDonald retired from films in the 1940's. Kathryn Grayson succeeded her in the 1950's as the popular operatic style singer in films.
She is so pretty.

Daddy love you always
First time I heard this, on TV, I thought the top would come off the set.
Amazes me every time I hear it. Even with an inferior recording like this.
Forgive the quality... but I had to post it!
@@babe471119 As you can see we are all very grateful you did!
I love this movie
People nowadays make a fuss over modern junk like “Hamilton” without knowing that, once upon a time, Broadway was beautiful.

There is a scene in Driving Miss Daisy where she is singing this song quietly to her self 1:49

You haven't lived until you've had this playing while you kick your feet up in the bayou.

A beautiful segment from the MGM film. Surely, however, this musical gem could have been uploaded with better, far less blurry, definition.

Yes, and I think that was the point. From elegance to show girl because she fell in love with a gambler. Could be Shakespeare, could be Eastenders. :)
jumpy picture and bad sound spoils the whole number
Sorry, it was the best I could do... but it was better than nothing on line...
