This is a quick basic recording tutorial for the Tascam 388. Make sure to like and subscribe. Just getting the channel off the ground. Lots more cool stuff coming.
All I want for Christmas is one of these.
so does shiny Joe Ryan
Same
Analog heaven. Such a beautiful machine. Always wanted one.
Synths, a 388, and pinball machines? You are living my dream.
It’s hard to leave this room. 🤘
You really have an authentic 80s recording studio, that's so cool!
Dawgs got $10,000 worth of gear in 3 instruments 💀I wish, good on you man. Cool stuff
Awesome vid Bro ! The Tascam 388 was king of the analog tape 8 tracks back in the day...Still is with that sweet tape compression saturation...wish I own one !!
wow dude gots real gear and it still has that new shine on it
Thanks for the fun video! I love my 388 too. It's complete magic!
love the old vintage Tascam gear. Would've loved a 388 with on-board 7" open reel 1/4" tape .. big-n-heavy but. I've gotta Tascam 246 Portastudio, their best cassette multitrack machine. I had it serviced a while ago, sourced the matching electret condenser mics. Also found then had serviced a Tascam 122 three-head cassette recorder .. makes pro recordings .. that could b the stereo mastering machine from the Portastudio's 4-trk. Lookin' 4ward to more of ur Tascam vids.
Nice hardware! Wish I had kept my 388…but I’m glad that they are still out there giving others joy! Cheers!
Thanks man! The 388 is very cool. I drove to Oregon from California to get it. It was mint in the original box. 🤘🔥🔥🤘
@@analogalex3103 That is awesome! Great score! Please keep making videos with your 388 as people are very fond of that machine. Cheers Alex!
Nice channel man! I heard Primus’s brown album was done on this thing, so cool!
Yes it was! Sometimes limitations can really help. I would encourage anyone to at least write one song using only 8 tracks.
I love the 388. It's a great sounding machine. I record at zero and with DBX. To me, that works. Nice video.
I grew up with a dad that owned the 244 portastudio and the 388. He wrote and recorded HUNDREDS of songs on them and I started sharing them on my RUclips Channel as well! Check them out we have more coming 🤟
Anyways I still have the Tascams and they both still work to this day. Got some new belts coming in for the 244 as of right now. Thanks for these videos for its nice to brush up on the workings of these fantastic gems
I’ll check them out!
Awesome! I love "legacy" gear (because well... I am old enough to be considered legacy). Just picked up a Tascam DM24 board and using with DAW (ADAT attached). Would love to hear comments/analysis on that config. Thanks for this video, well done sir!
Alex I also absolutely love your little Diddy at the end of the video. HEAVY indie rock goooooodness. I’m pretty sure you’re my brother from another mother. New fan…. Get to work…..
That’s awesome man! Thanks! When I finish a few tracks I’ll let you know.
Lovin' all content with a 388!
They sure are sweet! 🤘🔥🔥🤘
I knew a guy back in the 90's who for a weekend/weeknight side gig recorded local punk bands on a 388 for $20 an hour plus tape cost. Can't remember any of the band names, but he got a lot of work for several years.
That's an interesting mix of metal and analog synth-ness on the Soundcloud.
I had a Tascam MS16 and a Tascam 320B console (same series) for about a decade. Loved making records on that thing. I still have a 308 mixer that i'm about to recap just to keep for the pre and EQ. That papery midrange is great for guitars and synths.
I would like to find one of these..if they are still available!. I have the TASCAM model 12, but the level meters, so much better than the LEDs. To say as little as possible about the tape.❤
Yeah the meters are very cool!
VU meters give a more accurate feedback of what the volume is than LEDs do.
What happened, Alex? You had so many aspirations for the channel. I bought a 388 to run my LinnDrum and Prophet 5 through it so I could be just like you. You let me down....
@@tyler_ I know dude I suck. You know what’s even worse!? I sold both my 388’s and my Prophet 5. I had a mint in the original box 388. I regret it. I’ll make some videos of my new setup and explain why I sold them. Building a new studio in my backyard now. Maybe I’ll make a studio build video. 🤘
@@analogalex3103 curious as to what made you want to sell? Kind of still the honeymoon phase for me. I actually bought a Prophet 10 right when they released. I sold mine. Not that exciting for me to own newly made hardware when software is so close. For me, the only interest I have in hardware is if it is vintage, which is why I hang onto my Prophet 5 Rev 3. Hardware was the only option and nothing else replicated it back then but the real thing. Hard fot me to justify a piece of hardware made in 2024 for $3500 in place of software made the same year that costs $100. That's my thoughts, but hope to see some more content from you in the future.
You definitely need to get a patch bay. That would improve your work flow massively. I got a console so I can reduce the DAW to just a digital tape deck. I wish I could use a real one, but I'd need a 24 track, and that gets into a whole other world.
For someone with a band, where you can lay down multiple folks at a time on a single or stereo pair, this would be more than enough. Record the band to stereo laying down a base track, use the other six for overdubs. I mean Sgt Peppers was recording on FOUR track.
True, would be a great setup for something like that.
Didn’t the Beatles bounce tracks from one four track to another, Technically creating an 8 track?
Yeah just picked on up recently. Opened up a lot of possibilities.
Awesome! Great video.
What happens if you have multiple drum or synth parts how do you record this?
Depends on your gear. If you have a drum machine with multiple outs then you can run each out to the 388’s inputs and record all at once. You can record 8 tracks at one time. Just plug something into each input on the 388 and arm all the tracks to record and your off. 🤘
Very cool equipment! Question: are the line level cables you use to connect the synths to the 388 the same as guitar cables? SUBSCRIBED. :)
Thank You ..you make it easy for a recording novice like me..lol
How do u midi up the tascam ?
Tascam MTS 30
Have you ever tried to record into the 388 from a laptop computer? If I go from my laptop into my presonus Firefox then into the 388 I get a terrible white noise, If I go out of the laptop by itself and use the headphones out on the laptop I don't get the white noise but get feedback instead. If you have done this with any success can you tell me what I may be doing wrong? THANKS
Not sure what’s going on there. Make sure you are recording and plugged into the line input on the 388 in the back.
If you guys are interested in checking out the full track "LET ME OUT!" that's at the end of this video here are the links to Apple Music. Spotify. SoundCloud.

Woohoo!
I recorded so many albums on one of these back in the day. What pins do you have back there? We should be friends.
Got a few. I change the lineup all the time. Just picked up a hobbit. It’s very cool! 🤘
Mil bendiciones!!!
Hey thanks for posting this. I've been looking at the 388 for years. Had a tascam 424 mkii growing up and even tho it's not as large sounding as the 388 Ive always missed the sound that tape brings. Also sidenote, where can I find that track of yours "let me out"? - very cool man.
Keep looking. There are some deals out there. If you want to checkout the track I just loaded it up here on soundcloud.

Cool gear dude
Thanks man been collecting for a while now. Vintage gear is getting way too expensive nowadays.
What's better for analog sound? This machine or the modern model 24? They both have analog preamp amps
I haven’t used one of the modern ones. They look great though! I would imagine they would give you great sound and super easy daw integration. You just can’t beat watching that tape turn. Plus it sounds amazing. I normally use outboard pres anyways on my Tascam. I have a Neve and api 500 series’s.
Maybe someone else here can chime in that has used both machines.
I used various 8 trk recorders, almost all of them over the years and these were highly desirable when they came out. I preferred the AKAI MG1212 but this is very fat sounding.
Using s DI into the board pre amps is a nice sound for all at stuff you have.
I had all that same stuff, but the LINN drum machine. But try the other way. Those pres are cheap but they're add nice harmonics to synthsmsnd drumringos.
Yeah I use the 388 pres often. They sound great! Always wanted a Linndrum. It’s on my Christmas list. 😂
hell yea
How on earth do i take this front arm rest off and replace!!!!!!?
Never took it apart. Shouldn’t be too hard.
👍
Alex love your channel! Can I ask what studio furniture/table you have your tascam 388 sitting on? Have been looking for the right piece but everything I’ve seen either can’t handle the weight or is way too bulky
Thanks! Yeah it’s a keyboard stand I bought from Amazon. It works amazing. It’s like it was built for the 388. I did modify it a bit. If you get one message me and I’ll send you a few pics of it. Very easy. Works perfect.

Where can I hear that song let me out? Great video.

@@analogalex3103 awesome thanks!
what version of dbx is on the 388 ?
I dunno but it sounds really good.
How are you running the speakers out?
Just from the monitor outputs on the back.
They need their own power?
@@MastaSquidGT5 yes
Hey guys How can you work so smoothly on the monitors section??I have never been able to figure out it.seems all the gain and pan panels didn’t work on my 388….Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Hahaha!!! Ummmm can we be friends!!!??!! I have a 388 and that’s how I found your page but who cares about all that crap. Your man cave looks like heaven. Beautiful vintage gear everywhere to play with and when your brain needs more fun pick out an amazing pinball machine to drive you bananas. I’m babbling sorry. Rad setup man.
Of course we can be friends! I have a 388 you have a 388. Let’s hangout. Yeah dude I def like collecting vintage gear and pins. I actually just got a new pinball machine. Ghostbusters. You got to check that one out. Maybe I’ll make a video on my pinball collection. Could be cool. Thanks again for the kind words and comments.
I love that Prophet 5 I wish I could get that again
@@TheDymond28yeah it sounds amazing even if you suck at keys like me! 😂
I love mine. But it needs service, I think a belt slipped or broke.
That’s an easy fix. You can buy the belt off Amazon for $15. Very common issue. Look up the manual it’s a pretty easy unit to work on and adjust.
The t racks plugin of this is stupid good sounding but not well calibrated
Huh all channel strip are the same
Thought this was rob zombie
Hahaha I could see that.
@@analogalex3103 going on tour and selling merch isnt enough anymore...
sold mine in 2010 for 400 euros. yeah.
You know, there is such a thing as "bad analog." 8 track 1/4" machines? Not great. I started on those. Couldn't wait to go digital and have real fidelity and top end. Probably only relevant for deliberately lo-fi productions that want the added hassle of tape. Analog is such a snob thing now.
You guys are smoking rocks
Owned one, sounded shit. Mixer board on it's own was good though.
Man I think they sound awesome! To be honest most of the time I do use my api and Neve pres going in. So that can’t hurt! 🤘
