It is... probably not a coincidence that the intrinsically trans story has a theme (you can't fix a bad system by replacing one bad person) that is exactly antithetical to the core politics of Harry Potter.

I mean the idea that there's nothing wrong with a system, only a person, is a core of liberal (as opposed to leftist) ideology - "we just need to get orange man out and we'll be rid of fascism! Surely that'll mean the kids in cages will be freed and we'll stop doing war crimes abroad". And HP is pretty much the epitome of liberal thought

If it was a Rowling story, Nimona would have killed the Director, Ambrosius would have taken her place and rebuilt the institute, and Nimona would have found her "true" form as a good little human knight and never shifted again. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous.

I wish the most dramatic scene in the movie was not a self-ending attempt. It also doesn't help that Nimona still ends up sacrificing herself to stop the director (though she's probably not actually dead). While unintentional, it can dramatize and romanticize the act in people's eyes and convince people that the only way to get the love and acceptance you need to attempt to end yourself. Not very well thought out for a movie with trans teen themes.

I watched this with my children the other day. My daughter (8) has had a tough time, she is the only girl in the household and has internalised that into feeling like she doesn't fit in.
She did not want to watch the movie.
We got to the inciting incident about 15mins into the film and it shocked her, and all of a sudden she was hooked! She loved Nimonas character and the journey she goes through. She was so excited by the movie she enthusiastically showed her friends at school.
Nimona is a wonderful film and it struck a chord with my kids, where so many films lately do not. It's mindless entertainment or inoffensive mush. This had a point to make while keeping it open enough to be watched by ANYONE. Absolutely marvelous.

I think it’s worth pointing out that Ballister isn’t just a cis gay man, he’s a cis gay man of color. In text he’s rejected for being common, but Riz Ahmed brought a lot of his own experience as a British-Pakistani man to the role. (Fun fact: He’s used to covering up his natural accent for roles and decided not to with Ballister, both to make him stand out from his fellow knights and because he felt that in a movie about being true to yourself it was fitting to be true to himself in that way.) His character is that of someone who has had to constantly manage how he’s presented and has learned to survive by working hard and enduring because making a fuss will just make things worse suddenly having that option taken away from him. He’s never been able to hide who he is, so he doesn’t understand how Nimona could have that option and not want to take it.

I think Ambrosius as East Asian shows another dynamic. The scene where he's freaking out in the car with all these contradictory feelings and loyalties and then it turns out it's all in his head, all bottled up inside. On the face of it, he's won. A queer minority with all the power and accolades he's supposed to want. And yet he's still all torn up inside.

We get to know three knights. One is a queer minority with a regal heritage who is always the perfect knight because he feels he has to be perfect no matter the personal cost. Second a queer commoner of colour trying to be a perfect knight knowing deep down he can never be perfect enough. The third is a privileged cishet white guy who makes no effort even be minimally competent who thinks he _deserves_ all the power and glory for... existing. More than just trans themes in this movie.

Also says a lot about her "monster" form towards the end that, even though she looked scary and threatening at a glance, (mostly due to her size,) she had no teeth and no claws -- no ways of defending herself, and her exposed heart always shone bright like a target on her chest. She took a form that lacked ways to defend herself and that, in fact, just made her more vulnerable because, at that point, she just wanted to provoke the world into thrusting a sword into her heart.

While not trans as someone who is discovering they are autistic and has struggled for acceptance, seeing Nimona continue to try and find joy in life while carrying such a weight of loneliness really hit home. (ballister is even physically disabled which adds another layer to it!) nimona's description of her shifting being "i feel worse when i don't do it, like my insides are itchy - you know like that second right before you sneeze?" feels SO MUCH like a description of stimming!!! this movie is FULL of neurodivergent allegories in addition to being rife with gender

Based on the real backstory, whatever her "true" form, if she even has one beyond fluid, it's definitely not human. We see her in several forms but she only shifts to human when she first meets Gloreth.
I read the scene as her being actually very young and it was her first experience with humans (she didn't even initially seem to have human language) and she was drawn to Gloreth (and humans more broadly) because they were the only creatures capable of extending empathy and inclusion to her, even though she is other. All the animals rejected her. But Gloreth was the first to see her and love her as herself. Which made the betrayal so much more horrible.

This movie is so important, and it will continue to be important for generations to come.
I love how Ballister and Ambrosius are both gay cis men that aren't immediately accepting of Nimona at first. It's not just the straight cis white men/women that discriminate against people different than them.
You can be gay and be transphobic. You can be gay and be biphobic. You can be bi and be transphobic. You can be queer in general and be afraid of somebody else you don't understand because they think differently. You can even be trans, and still be transphobic. Blaire White is a perfect example of this.
Who a person is or what they look like shouldn't have to be molded into one binary answer. Any one person is a human being with complex thoughts, feelings, and emotions, just like you. This is the most basic level of respect that we should have for each other.
Anyone is capable of changing their mind, but the problem is that many people don't want to change their mind. You cannot make someone think differently unless they want to think differently.
I think that's the core of the issues we face today. Unless we make the decision to be open and change our minds, we'll only continue to destroy ourselves.
thanks for coming to my ted talk lol

It is so dissappointing to me as a cis queer / gay man to see that others within our own community can hold genuine bigotry against trans and non-binary people. It goes against everything that we fight for in terms of freedom of self-expression and self-identity. We SHOULD know better and be the right-hand supporters of trans people like not even straight people can be. Sadly, it can also feel validating to punch down whenever there is a group with less freedom and equality than one's own.

I agree completely. I'm trans and my sister an Evangelical Christian. She completely doesn't see herself as transphobic. Nor a bigot. "Hate the sin, love the sinner" and "God makes no mistakes." I believe she went through a fairly serious crisis of faith a few years ago, at least partly due to my coming out, and her answer was to pray lots. Sadly those prayers seem to have been "answered" because her anti-trans rhetoric and beliefs have escalated.

(And yes, it got so bad there were times my life was actually in danger, and the people who had a responsibility _in loco parentis_ to protect me instead told me it was my own fault.) Hiya, straight dude here.
So I read the graphic novel last year to help me get into graphic novels. And I absolutely adored it. All of it. Then I found out about the movie drama, and was gutted. Purely because I wanted to see it as a movie.
Then the movie got revived, and I was excited. Again, purely from a "I want a movie adaptation" point-of-view.
In between all that time, I find myself discovering more about the LGBTQ+ world. How amazing it is, how nice the people are and how unfair the system and the media can be. As a straight bloke, I'd never even considered these things. Not out of malice, simply out of not being a part of the community.
Then Nimona comes out. Literally two days ago. And it's not only good, its REALLY good. Dare I say it, in some places it's better than the graphic novel. And suddenly, I can see all of these extra layers that I'd never even considered. Even in this review, new scenes are retextualised with a queer perspective. And seeing how beloved this film is quickly becoming and how loved it is by the LGBTQ+ community is nothing short of heart-warming.
Look, I've seen a lot of adaptations and sequels go down horribly. No end of failed cinematic universes, book adaptations, game adaptations, etc. So the fact that this very gay graphic novel written by a masculine-non-binary author got made into a movie, the studio making got shut down, the film then gets revived by a service that changes its mind/quality about animation every other day; AND IT COMES OUT GOOD.
It makes me so happy :)

I also think it's really important that Ballister was the main character for his character design. He looks like the kind of man of color that is usually an antagonist. All of the rest of the knights are so much more light skinned than him. He spends so much time repeating that he is not a villain, while the whole city thinks he is. It was only bc the queen believed in him so strongly that they accepted him at all even before everything went down. I believe that the queen chose ballister bc the intersection of being a woman of color in this city allowed her to see the problems more easily, and why the director so easily killed her. It can be very tempting to go for the character arc, but in this case, the themes and the story make more sense if Nimona is essentially the wise mentor who teaches rather than learns.

We need more of this. Actual queer people telling queer stories. From It's A Sin to Heartstopper to Nimona we have literal evidence that queer people creating queer art and telling queer stories is beautiful and magical and heartbreaking and completely necessary. Representation and diversity doesn't just happen on screen. We need it in the writers room, in the directors chair, in the editing suite, in the research team, behind the camera. We need queer people telling queer stories. We need them at the heart of media. We need them there from beginning to end. When queer people have the freedom to tell these stories we get products like this.

Even though i knew that there was a gay relationship in the movie, i did not expect it to be the main characters relationship. For most of the movie i watched, fully expecting them to take the "we're just really good friends" route and it says more about me than the movie that it took Ambrosius saying "i love you" to make me go "oh, maybe they will actually follow through with it"
Also, Nimona is such a mood. I love her joy, i know her anger and i wish so hard that i could have seen this movie 10 years ago when teen me felt completely alone in the world.

One thing that I love that the movie addresses is how sometimes you have to "come out" more than once. And each time you do, you have to worry if this new aspect will be the thing that pushes people away. Especially on a gender journey where you may go bounce around labels for a bit. And all the while you have to decide who you want to tell and how much you want share. Because each new layer you reveal may become "too much".

I dissolve into a sobbing mess every time I see the ending scene where Nimona is about to fall on the sword. She is so chaotic, and so unabashedly herself, and so FUN. The film has SO many layers that examine oppressive systems of power and how they intersect. The Director yelling, "He has a weapon!" when Ballister reaches for his phone has LITERALLY played out when police murder unarmed Black men; Ballister trying to be the "ideal" minority so he'll be accepted into the system; the fearmongering that "they could be ANYONE" in an attempt to regain control over a population and break down resistance before it can properly coalesce--it's kind of ironic that such a subversive film is hosted on such a huge platform, but I kind of revel in that irony. The whole movie is about questioning authority: "WHO does the dominant narrative SERVE?"

I've been told that, in the novel, The Institution is highly homophobic. This seems to be reflected in the movie as Bal and Ambro never display their affection for each other in public until the end: The first tender moment between them is, as you said, done behind Gloreth's back in a secluded place. Ambro refrains from telling The Director what's on his mind (mostly his tumultuous feelings concerning Ballister). The nacho place Bal and Ambro meet up at for their "date" is a shady place in a shady part of the city. Ambro telling Bal "Because I love you" is also done while they are alone. Their first public display of affection (the kiss) only happens after The Director has been dealt with and The Institute seemingly has been effectively dismantled.

I am a cis-gendered, heterosexual white guy who grew up in a very rural, conservative area that the census would reveal a 97% white population. I never really was taught to be bigoted, but anyone growing up in the 90s/2000's just accepted casual homophobia as part of life. But I grew up and left my hometown and did the military thing and then went to college and then moved cross country and became a cop.
Then I met my wife. She is a bisexual, half Navajo woman who was raised by lesbians. She replaced my ignorance with knowledge and my tolerance with acceptance. I've made so many friends who are LGBTQ+ since then and though I might put my foot in my mouth sometimes, I have their backs now.
Movies like this are so important for people like me who weren't exposed to the "nonconforming" ways other people live. I would have loved this movie as a kid (our 7 year old loved it and cried so hard at the ending) and I probably would have been better prepared for the spectrum of humanity as an adult.
Nimona might be my favorite movie of the year. It tells a story we know with characters a lot of us don't. It tells the story and just lets the characters identities be. I loved the movie and I'm telling everyone and their uncle to watch it.
And I haven't been a cop in ten years. That entire culture is full of angry people who can have 3 conversations and 2 of them are about guns. And not how we need gun reform. Let's just say I didn't fit in with what they wanted.

So. As advised, I put this video on hold until I watched Nimona. And oh, was that a good idea.
Despite being queer in a lot of ways myself, I saw my nb partner in Nimona, in a lot of ways. The passion, the anger, the power, the confidence, the sense of humour. From the time Nimona started marching towards the sword, I started crying and couldn't stop, until the movie ended. In the endimg, as we were seeing people moving on without her, despite the love she got, all I could think was "yes, but she is gone. You accepted her, but she is not here. She should have been here. It's is unfair." Nothing felt like could console me, or make me make piece with her death.
Because of that, the little hint of pink, indicating she might be still here, felt like the best consolation, like a warm hand of a queer creator on my back saying "it's ok, she doesn't have to die. She is still here and she will be loved." And that kindness, I think, was the part of the movie that made me feel like we were in mind while making this film the most.
Also sending the message that we won't disappear like that. We will be back, and loud, always.

One very interesting change to me was that the graphic novel makes absolutely clear that the ENTIRE Institute is corrupt, with several scenes of guards doing stuff like kicking homeless people around and stockpiling the very drug they made illegal. While in the movie, it's pretty much just the Director, with all the other guards turning on her once she endangers the city and even Todd giving Ballister a respectful nod once he's proven right. I'd love to know just how much Stevenson themself was involved in that story decision, and how much it represents a changing view since the graphic novel was made.

I love that this wasn't a coming out story, a story about dysphoria, or even an origin story. It was about trans rage and despair and the _bigotry_ that causes those things. Nimona *loved* being trans... or a shape shifter. She didn't have dysphoria or even care why she was the way she was. What she cares about is the bigotry she's experienced literally for centuries and the emotional damage she's taken because of that.
Nimona isn't broken before she is attacked by the villagers. At most she is lonely. She loves herself and her abilities. The only thing that ever changes that is the unrelenting hate she experiences. Nimona in a vaccuum is beautiful, strong, completely valid - joyous.

    • @GrahamChapman

    • @CorwinFound
      @CorwinFound Год назад +1

@@GrahamChapman Oh yeah. But the story isn't about her struggling with that. As an example, I'm a trans guy and I don't experience dysphoria. Now. After HRT, top surgery, wearing the clothes I want, name and pronouns, surprise surprise, no dysphoria. Dysphoria is part of my past of course, but it's not part of my current story.
So sure, maybe at some point Nimona struggled to not be a shifter and experienced that dysphoria. But that isn't part of the existing story. It makes up about 30 seconds of dialogue.
It's similar to her origin story. We never get it. And that's great. Is there a place for discussions with trans people about dysphoria and how we figured it out and the why's of transness? Sure. But I think the stories of what are we experiencing in the now are much more important. Nimona's story in the movie isn't about what or why she is. It's about how she's been made to feel by hatred, propaganda, fear, and isolation. And that's a far more meaningful story than what dysphoria is like or how she came to be.

    • @GrahamChapman
      @GrahamChapman Год назад +1

@@CorwinFound Ah, you meant like that. Yes, that is true enough; the dysphoria isn't the main obstacle for Nimona to overcome, it's just an easily overcome-able part of her everyday life, necessary for Ballister to understand in order to better understand her but hardly worth paying much/any attention to... I'm glad to hear you've managed to defeat your dysphoria, and kudos to all the people who had your back and supported you along that way. ^^
I'm gender fluid myself and occasionally get bouts of dysphoria when switching but, similar to Nimona, it cannot be considered a part of any of the main struggles in my life. Especially not as long as the alt-right are around.
I really liked the fact that the closest thing Nimona had to an origin story was "a thousand years ago." If she had an origin story in the traditional sense, I very much feel like that would've undermined both her, as an allegorical character, and the movie itself: She has always been the way she is. She has always been around. Just like us.
On a related note, I also really liked that Nimona wasn't given a "true" form, but that the movie remained adamant that she is Nimona: Regardless of what form she takes, that form _is_ her true form and a way for her to realize herself.

@@GrahamChapman All trans people can relate of course to Nimona, but the closest allegory has to be gender fluid. Her story actually gave me, a fairly binary and rather stationary gender trans guy, a much better insight into gender fluidity. That was very cool to me.
And yes, the insistence that Nimona is Nimona regardless of her form was amazing. In each form she had traits of that animal and _was_ that animal. It was really obvious in the shark, gorilla and especially the cat. I loved watching her stalking and pouncing after the mouse while casually chatting with Ballister.
I think what makes the different forms and behaviours work is that Nimona is so freaking Nimona! Her personality is so strong and who she is is always evident regardless of what animal she is. While still always _being_ that animal.
Guaranteed this is going to be a queer classic forever. I really can't imagine that in 20 years we'll look back and cringe in any way. In my limited opinion it's the first truly queer kids movie ever made.

@@CorwinFound Helping us understand each other across the trans community will also lead to tighter bonds and a stronger trans-transgender alliance, so that is very cool indeed. ^^
It's not just trans people who've been able to relate to Nimona: Being an allegorical character, she does of course also lend herself to represent "the other" in a more broad sense as well: Plenty of neurodivergent people can also relate to Nimona on account of the themes of needing to mask who one really is and stuff... As luck would have it, I'm both gender fluid _and_ autistic, so I can relate to her from both angles, but I definitely feel most seen from the gender fluid angle and feel that seeing gender fluid representation was much more important to me than seeing possible neurodivergent representation.
Me and my mtf niece have fully embraced the phrase "I'm not a boy/girl/people. I'm a Shark/Blåhaj!"
But, yeah. It's like, no matter what shape Nimona takes, you can always tell that she's still the same gremlin. xD
And I am very much inclined to agree with you; Nimona is a true milestone. Personally, I kinda feel that this movie is to trans people (and gay men to a lesser extent) what The Owl House was to sapphic women... And, yeah, provided human civilization can stand the test of time, (a prospect that feels more and more hopeless to me, if I'm to be honest,) I can see Nimona being used to help many children for many decades forward realize who they are and strengthen them in the struggles against adversity and the real monsters out there. **glares daggers at DeSantis**

I'm so glad there are more movies and filmmakers who are actually paying attention to how intelligent children really are. It's so refreshing not to feel talked down to, and I'm sure children today will grow to appreciate that later on as they grow.

Watched it today with my 11 year old daughter who just got her hands of the graphic novel a few weeks ago and was obsessed. It was incredible. I immediately took to social media and told my queer friends, and more importantly my non queer friends to watch this asap. It is a perfect allegory for what we are currently living through.

My god, I ADORE the way you discuss things in your videos. The passion in your voice is so cathartic. It feels good to hear someone saying these things in a very "I will NOT be ignored" tone.
I also just... have so many intense feelings about Nimona right now, and you pointed out a couple things that I hadn't even considered yet! I've found myself applying a LOT of this movie's message and execution to another important part of my identity besides just my queerness, so I did appreciate you saying that the way the Director thinks applies to things beyond that, because it absolutely does, and it hurts me SO good.

Nimona popped up in our trending tab and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As a movie, on it's own merits. Since then, I've learned more about the backstory, the creator and how it was almost not made/shelved. I'm kind of amazed this made it to screen. Glad it did though. Hoping the success encourages Netflix to source more movies like this and I look forward to seeing what the creator does next.

I also think nimona can be read in many different ways. She and ballister can represent all kinds of marginalized communities or simply misfits.
I personally think reading nimona as Neurodivergent of some sort works really well. Ballister would basically be asking her to mask, and her describing not shapeshifting as her insides itching would be pretty accurate to how masking makes autistic or Neurodivergent people feel. You don't die if you don't stim, but you feel like you just might.

I wish I could fully describe how important this movie is. Beyond the obvious lgbtq representation, the subtext of feeling like a monster resonates with me as an atheist. I have been literally demonized for my views against the bible and church am on the fringes of society as a homeless person because of various bad luck situations involving religious nuts (but also the rent is too damn High-anyway)
I feel lgbtq people and non believers share a lot of similar struggles such as coming out and being rejected or worse, losing family and friends and stuff. I feel our battles are intertwined too because it seems religion is the root of all the hatred toward both our causes.
If we can somehow expedite the end of religion, it must be done.
