I’m so bummed that I lost my Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189. I absolutely loved this knife. I liked it so much, I had purchased one for my 86 year old Dad that likes a smaller knife as well. I will be searching for a replacement. Great video! 👍🏼 👍🏼
TRM Atom and opinel #8 garden, those are my 2 slickest blades. The #8 garden is an under rated opinel. Looks good and it’s cheap. Keep up the great videos!
Jay I've been watching you for a couple years now and I've never once noticed your right hand. I'm a lefty aswell and a knife accident a couple years ago messed up my right hand badly, a few fingers will be messed up for life. Cheers brother!
Lots of knife reviewers on here but you are the best in my opinion, I have bought over 1k in knives so far based on your recommendations and have been very pleased, keep up the good work brother, you put a lot of work into your vids and it shows.
My top three...Spyderco chappy, choose your Civivi (I like the praxis) and the Opinel #7. The Opinels shouldn’t be overlooked just because they’re “old timey”. I have a bunch and love them all. My favorite is the #7 though. Small enough to disappear in your pocket, big enough to be comfortable in your hand.
Really cool list Jay. I was actually hoping for this one. Slicing had been an important factor in my latest purchases. I'm very pleased with the Kizer Domin. Excellent geometry. I know were talking folders here, but for EDC fixed blades, the Tops street scalpel 2, Cold Steel bird and game, and my new CRKT Folts minimalist bowie in D2 with tan micarta are some of the best slicers I've used period.
OMG Jay we think alike in many ways. I just got a TRM Atom a few days ago. It's amazing, a scalpel. I have some high-end Japanese kitchen knives and the Atom doesn't give any points away to them in sharpness, it's just outstanding. So if you put the Bugout above that, I'll take you seriously but whoa. With my kitchen-knife perspective I do value thin, slicey blades, and I have a few Opinels, but this was interesting for sure. Thanks for monitoring the whole world of knives out there. It's really a service to the rest of us. ETA Very much endorse the Opinel but I carried a No. 6 in a pocket for decades and never found it obtrusive where the No. 8, yeah, it's a bit big for pocket carry.
Jay, I have recently lost my first good knife (Civivi Brigand). Your channel is an awesome resource and you seem to have a video for every category that interest me! I really appreciate all the unbiased information you have provided me in my quest for the perfect replacement. Keep them coming, My Friend!
What razor blades do you buy? Because my knives are generally sharper than razor blades I get out of box stores I can’t shave with them but I can shave with my knives 🧐
@@caseytyler8326 My knives are also usually sharper than utility razors. I was referring to slicing capability. Sharpness is the quality of the apex but slicing ability is a product of overall blade geometry, stock thickness and sharpness combined. Razor blades are 10x thinner. To give an exaggerated example, you could put an apex on an axe head that is sharper than a utility razor and will in fact shave hair. Even though it's sharper, you're not going to slice cardboard very well. 🧐🔪🧐
Love to see you do another slicer video....Bugout vs Stanley FastMax ultility/box cutter knife....seriously. The pocket-knife with the thinnest behind the edge/stock you have ....vs ANY utlity knife (e.g. Milwakee, Stanley, CAT..etc. ) ...
Thoughts on the Sandrin Knives "polyhedral" tungsten carbide blades as slicers? The Dellatorre for instance? Super-thin blades and supposedly wicked edges and retention should make them great slicers.
Hey Jay! Sorry I am late! After years of Knive hobby, I prefer the Knives with thinner Geometry. Thank you for showing another great Video! Much appreciated. My Slicer Knives are my Real Steel H6 with the Hollow Grind and the Praxis!
Wow, good list. I wanted to hear the rest of your dozier story, cutting those cans, haha. Faves were that, the rat II, dragonfly, gent, drifter, chaparral, and neutron 2. The bugout would have been on there if it had different scales. I thought you would have had the deka on their as it seems to be a super thin blade. Thanks for sharing. Be safe.
As usual, I'm blown away by your detailed and layered collection. The Pioneer X got an honorable mention and that works for me👍. I like that Appalachian Drifter too.
Nice chart. My favorite is still the Opinel, but N°07 - only 0,5 cm shorter blade zhan the N°08, only 1,5 mm thick, slight convex shape, but much more subtile handle than N°08. Btw: A knife without a sharp point, a hybride called Victorinox Swiss Classic folding knife with non-serrated blade. Only 1 mm thick SAK steel blade, sharp as hell. Ideal food slicer, and still has ability to cut cardboard and other thigs. Ps.: No problem to grind a point on this weak but razor sharp hybride.
Civivi Elementum... ? Hey Jay, thanks man. That’s what I like on most knives...that thin blade stock. And then another step up, being the hollow grind, my favorite grind. I just bought the civivi Pintail. I don’t know Ford sure what the blade stock is on the Pintail but I do know it is very thin and has a hollow grind.
I have Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel and many other brands but my favorite cardboard cutting knife is my Buck Vantage Select large. The high hollow ground blade slices easily and the blade is very easy to sharpen.
My best slicer by far is the tops msk 4.0... bought on eBay (middle of the night oops buy. Tried to sell on bf nobody bit and I have grown to love it! The thing is born to slice and sharpens up very easy
Great video. Thank you. I have an older Chaparral in S30V and it’s a laser beam. Not a fan of the lock back but it’s a Top 3. Have you ever tested or used the Sandrin Torino? It is very thin and has a microbevel edge. Tungsten carbide blade. Tempted to get one.
Thanks for the great list Jay! I've been eyeballing the chaparral for awhile now, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. That appalachian drifter is really cool too. Cheers!
Thanks a lot for the video!💚 It’s a wee bit sad that Spyderco discontinued the Dragonfly in zdp-189, chances are I’m not going to be able to get it here in Russia... But I hope the k390 version will be available eventually
Grab a k390 dragonfly when you can, you won't be disappointed. It's expensive but totally worth it. Holds a similar edge to zdp but is easier to sharpen imo
I'm right there with you on the slip joint thing...... It all started when i was a little boy with my first pocket knife carving what i thought would be a work of art..........
Ah man, just as I convinced myself I really don’t need another knife, so the fact I don’t have a Benchmade is really no problem, it really isn’t...... Then show me this 😕 So back to the matter I contemplated til yesterday, a Bugout, Mini Freek or a Mini Griptillian 🤔 Nice video again, and I just realise I am not subscribed but I watch and like all your posts very much. So that’s corrected right now!
Lol! Thank you Bert. That really is a tough choice, all 3 are great. For me, it would be either the Bugout or Mini Freek. Mini Grip is good too, just a little small for my hand.
Great video Jay. Love a nice slicer. I don’t have that many knives but my top slicers are probably the Civivi Shredder and the CJRB Centros. Nice list sir.
I'll nominate a couple for you. The spyderco ukpk in s110v, any buck knife since they're sporting hollow grinds, and my nominee for ultra budget knife of the year the freetiger ft903.
You should consider scaling down on Opinel. Thinner stock and handle. My favourite knife of all time and the best slicer is the humble Opinel No.06 Carbone. I do have Chaparral FRN and Mini Bugout, but that Opinel beats them. BTW you can't be serious that Bugout cuts better than Chaparral. It is much thicker behind the edge.
Nice list, Jay! I love a good slicer. I've been keeping a Petrified Fish 719 in my cardigan pocket around the house this winter. It sports a thin modified Wharncliffe blade in 12C27. Curiously, it has pretty rosewood scales, no clip, and a traditional look but it runs on bearings and has a truly drop-shut action. Unfortunately, it's heavily biased for right-handed use. I also like the the S35VN Elementum. It uses thinner stock than the D2 version so it's a double win.
Hey Jay! Only my Victorinox Huntsman would have made the list :) Wish you could have given the Midnight Champ blade a go through that cardboard. I bet you would not have been disappointed!
Can’t agree with bugout over the neutron. Neutron is thinner stock, thinner behind the edge, better steel, and much better factory edge. Don’t see how this is even a debate. You can literally see and hear how much easier it cuts in the video!
Most knife blades are way too thick. My Sister got a TT full of furniture from Penn. They left a ton of cardboard, it was either 3 or 4 wall corrugated. I happened to be there. Not much thicker but my PM2 was getting hung up every 12-16”. I have 5 DF2’s and have used them so hard, I thought the blade would snap out (not on that corrugated). But no problems. My Chapparels are probably my best cutters. Delica is good too but not sure of blade stock. A great hard use knife with thinner blade stock is the Steel Will Gekko made in Italy by Viper or Fox, great quality but pricey.
That cardboard sounds like some of the good stuff. The tip of the PM2 blade slices pretty good, but that's only using a very small section. I know what you mean though because mine gets hung up sometimes too.
WOW! That Bugout cut through like butter from this side of the screen:) Impressive, I should probably breakdown and buy one. I'm looking to buy an American made knife next, with steel considered better than D2.
Hey Jay, Thx for all this good stuff. Quick question: I hear “walk and talk” when describing knives and I’m not sure what that means. Open question to anyone who knows. Merci
Really good list. I didn't find the Bugout to be that slicey. I have a big knife the DX2 that is super slicey. Behind the edge in the large hollow grind is 8 thousandths.
Great vid as always Jay. About victorinox, the 93 mm seem thicker than the 91. If you take the the Camper for instance you have a thin stock on the main blade and even thinner on the secondary small blade. For me it is number one.
Oh hey I have the Random Leek, the one with the reverse Tanto. Thing is STUPID sharp. To the point where it just _glides_ through cardboard, and apparently my finger, because I didn’t notice I had cut myself until I felt blood crossing my palm. Factory sharp, btw
Civivi Elementum in CPM S35VN, Rough Ryder VG10 Stockman, and KaBar Dozier. I love the TRM Atom absolutely amazing knife. Haven't tried the Neutron. I do like the Bugout, but the Elementum is slicier.
The thinnest I use is probably my opinel no. 7 followed by the CRKT CEO . But at times those simply feel tooooo thin and somehow thicker blade stocks feel safer to me, as well as appeal to me more. The CRKT pilar is one of my all time favourites due to that!
I know what you mean because I usually like a thicker blade stock too. The thinner stuff tends to cut better. Always a compromise. That's part of the reason why the PM2 is so popular. The blade starts thick, then really thins out at the tip, best of both worlds.
@@TheKnifeBeater I actually wasn't aware about that! The PM2 certainly has a lot going for it already. Does the para 3 feature the same blade thinning?
Had a Dividend, I really liked it. I was gonna say the TRM Atom, but the Neutron 2 is the same (maybe the Atom's blade is thicker?) I also wanted to add the Mini Ritter RSK, but I think it's blade is too thick as well.

Perhaps maybe you can help me decide on a small knife I can use to bring to steakhouses since their knives usually suck. I am currently deciding on the CRKT CEO, and the Shun Higo DM5900. I understand the ceo might not be for cutting steak, but it looks like it can do a good job of it to me! Perhaps you have a different suggestion? Anyway, thank you very much!

Had a Dividend, I really liked it. I was gonna say the TRM Atom, but the Neutron 2 is the same (maybe the Atom's blade is thicker?) I also wanted to add the Mini Ritter RSK, but I think it's blade is too thick as well.
I did consider the mini Ritter, but you're right it's just a little thicker. Thank you Caldren.
The best slicer in my drawer is likely the CH 3001. I think it's about 3mm thick at most, razer sharp.
For sure, mine is a scalpel too! One of the sharpest factory edges out of all my knives.
You really should test the knives by cutting the cardboard against the grain.
Hi there! New subscriber here! I love the content you got going on here! I also subbed and please don't take this the wrong way, because your info said you have CP. I work in the occupational therapy field, so I get excited when I see people doing awesome with their disabilities! Ive seen a lot of woe is me types and its understandable, but I love seeing those who go oh well, how can I make others lives better? And thats what you are doing with all your knowledge here and give aways and so on! I am just super excited to see what you got going on here and plan on sticking around! I hope none of this offends you in anyway, I mean no offense! I specialize in autism, and CP so thats what I am drawn to! I look forward to seeing what you have next!
My Riffle and Lumi glide through paper like it isn’t even there
Hopefully a miraculous cure makes you brand new again. Thanks for the showcase man :)
I know what you mean and I appreciate it, but I've come to terms with it a long time ago. I guess I kinda had to.
@@TheKnifeBeater I have also taken nerve damage. From my experience, I have found that the right thumb links to the left big toe, and the left thumb to the right big toe. Oregano has natural antibiotic properties that assist with bone inflammation. Once the dead cells are purged from the affected areas, healing can begin. Vibrational purging includes Tibetan singing bowls which utilize 8 types of metal. Isochronic Rife frequencies by Newtimer5 and VOFF UGGLA heal specific symptoms.
@@TheKnifeBeater The body is miraculous. My pelvic dislocate has forced me to look at traditional medical approaches. OHMing kills infections and Swiss yodeling heals bones. Laying on one's back with legs pointed upright in the air against a wall begins spinal healing as blood wells at the pelvis.
Newport protech
Nice choice.
Wish you sliced a veg or fruit as well.
Ranking down the opinels slicing ability because it’s handle is thick in the pocket🥴
Your channel is so good, but really bad for my wallet... :) Thanks for interesting content!
Lol. Thank you!
Watu slices even better than Chapparal. Bugout is a slicer but not a champion slicing blade
Blade stock matters far less than grind thickness at the edge. Here the Opinel leaves the rest of these knives in the dust.
Plus they cheap and easy to customize, buy 5 and make an eclectic collection. I ground one into a one hand opener and its awesome.
Usually, a thinner blade stock means it should be thinner behind the edge
@@TheKnifeBeater I have not found that to be the case at all. Many of the knives you listed are upwards of 20 thou BTE.
